The first time I volunteered for a political campaign was Claiborne’s first bid for the Senate in 1960. My brother and I passed out buttons at a parade here in Newport. He and my dad were childhood friends as well as cousins. One of his daughters is my daughter’s Godmother. RI is greatly saddened by his death. He is responsible for thousands upon thousands of students getting college grants. Despite his conservative views on art, he was a huge proponent of all of the arts. He outlived two of his children. He was—-and is—-a legend in Rhode Island. His last trip out of the country was to Cuba and it would have pleased him to know that the embargo may be lifted.

Obama! Running as a delegate for Obama, campaigning for him in Newport, RI and Nashua, NH, hosting house parties and fundraisers, and then working as a supervisor at my polling place. Being part of a democratic system that made me proud to be an American again, was the highlight of 2008 for me.
