Candice Bergen: What Murphy Brown Would Have Said About Sarah Palin

If her office hadn’t confirmed it’s an actual interview and not doctored by the Daily Show, I would not have believed it. Like you said, she is chatting along aimlessly while behind her a guy in a Carhartt, grinning into the camera, is shoving turkeys head down into some machine that kills them or drains them or something. It wasn’t so much the slaughtering part that bothered me as my immigrant grandparents routinely killed stuff for dinner. It’s her utter obliviousness. We dodged a bullet, sending that one back to Alaska :D 1.3M views: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-kjM1asH-8&fmt=18

Candice Bergen: What Murphy Brown Would Have Said About Sarah Palin

Bev, I admire you for maintaining a decent relationship with your DIL. It must be hard. As a Roman Catholic, I just wanted to share a story with you that you may or may not be able to share with your DIL. Her views are not keeping pace with the direction our church is moving. In late 2005, Kerry Kennedy, the founder of Speak Truth to Power and author of Being Catholic Now, met with Pope Benedict XVI. She asked him to consider changing the church’s position on birth control, especially related to AIDS prevention. She writes in the current Oprah magazine: You never know when what you say or do will make a difference and why somebody in a position of tremendous power decides to take up an issue. As one of the largest providers of social services in the world, the Catholic Church is acutely aware of the AIDS pandemic. More than anything, I was hopeful that my words might be one more straw on the camel’s back. The Pope could have said, “How rude!” but he said “God bless you.” I am grateful for that blessing. That was in November, and by April he announced that he’d formed a committee to look into the use of condoms. Maybe what I said had something to do with it. I’ll never know, but you always have to try. Love, Ruth

Cynthia McFadden Recalls Vitriolic Remarks Among John McCain Supporters Election Night

Most aren’t ugly like that, Patti and Barbara. But ugly is endemic among concern trolls on message boards. Best to ignore.

Linda Tripp Praises Obama's 'Purity of Soul'

Thx to all who reminded us of Linda Tripp’s treachery against a friend. Imagine taping your friend’s private words to you and then using them for destructive political purposes. If she’d have apologized and done some penance, that would be one thing. But she’s as self-satisfied and self-serving today as then. Continuing shame on you, Linda

Cindy McCain's Press Secretary Says: 'I've Never Seen Someone So Maligned'

She’s never seen someone so maligned? That is a hoot. She must cover her eyes and stick her fingers in her ears and sing la la la whenever the msm gets going on Hillary.

Sarah Palin for President in 2012?

A young friend of mine made a cute ode to Sarah (it’s short, and on youtube): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlfw1hDDXcg It’s called “A Maverickan Beauty: Song to Sarah” Enjoy!

Liz Smith: Non-Stop Divas - Sarah Palin, Liz Taylor (and Her Hats!), Liza Minnelli, Patti LaBelle, Tina Turner and Jody Watley!

Liz, Sarah is no Diana, but McCain reminds me of Charles. They both thought they were getting malleable, like-minded younger women. Surprise.

Caroline Kennedy Stumps for Obama at the Mother of All Florida Retirement Villages

Having lived in a 3500-home homeowner’s association in FL, I know you make a deal with the devil: give up many constitutional rights and receive in return cleanliness, property value, order, homogeneity, and safety—and a prescribed filter through which the world will be viewed unless you’re devoted full time to thinking for yourself. As MaryPage said, all the ladies would love to see Caroline, so it’s a shame. But they made a trade-off, signed up for both deed and social restrictions, and we live with our decisions.

Greenspan Shrugged? Did Ayn Rand Cause Our Financial Crisis?

Greenspan’s mea culpa reminds me of Robert McNamara’s. We don’t need more close-minded, over-confident people like them at the helm of the major institutions that impact our daily American lives. And the defense of Ayn Rand is comical. Did she think the USDA should set standards for milk production and distribution? Did she think there should be minimum specifications for how bridges are built in our country? Did she think factories would be motivated to minimize emissions to our air and water because we consumers would somehow find out about their pollution and refuse to buy their products? Did she think one bank should buy up all our neighborhood banks, eliminating the local competition that used to make my calls of complaint to Bank of America a little more potent? You must be joking, defending this monopolist. Ayn seems to have had an hysterical, radical response to communism that is as unhelpful for problem-solving as that of the radical left.

Greenspan Shrugged? Did Ayn Rand Cause Our Financial Crisis?

It is amazing to me that anyone would revere the amoral Rand. Yet these are the same people who try to insist that ours is a “Christian nation.” One or the other, folks :D

Palin to Women: Obama Would've Picked Hillary if He Really Cared About You

Margaret Atwood anticipated Sarah Palin in Serena Joy. To maintain power, the men of Gilead rely on Serena and the willingness of women to oppress other women. This speech today took the cake.

What factor, honestly, decides your vote on election day?

I vote on values. McCain shares some of my conservatism. But he is such a misogynist. First he picks Palin, who reminds me of Serena Joy. Then he puts “health of the mother” in air quotes during the debate and refers dismissively to Lilly Ledbetter. Then he confirms his misogyny this weekend by decrying what he calls the “liberal feminist agenda.” The former maverick doesn’t share my pro-woman values. Obama does, so I’m voting for him.

Remembering Edie Adams: The Legendary TV Darling Dies at 81 (Videos)

now there’s a gal who knew how to wink ; ) rest in peace, Edie

Who won Thursday night's debate?

I am disappointed she settles for falling back on style rather than substance. She seems incurious, like George W. Bush, like she has not spent much if any time really thinking and being challenged to refine ideas and positions on national and international issues. I don’t want another snake oil salesman like George W. Bush. It concerns me that Republican-Americans are willing to settle for so little. On the other hand, Rasmussen today has Obama up 10 points in NH.

Madam-Speaker Pelosi, Archbishop Battle Over Abortion

No, none of us do. We can only read the signs, and all signs point to it. GOP strategists and banks are gleeful about it. I am confident this is who McCain wants in that role. And my point is, let’s look at who McCain is likely to surround himself with. His advisors and go-to men and women are the architects and boosters of the GOP’s failed economic and diplomatic policies of the Bush years. But if you’ve heard anything different and solid about Treasury, let us know. I keep tabs on who each candidate will surround himself with as President, because we’ve seen how much trouble those unelected Cabinet officials got us into the past eight years.
