Liza Donnelly's Cartoon of the Week: When I Grow Up

Liza,

Seeing this made me laugh.

Years ago when I was a legal secretary, I occasionally had phone conversations with a woman who ran her husband’s law office (he was a retired judge, in private practice then). Anyway, she and I used to joke and laugh about how we should have been hookers or call-girls instead. She used to say we were prostituting ourselves anyway. We would have probably been very good at it, and had a lot more fun than having to deal with the daily crap we had to deal with, in running law firms. So I thought of her today, and had a good laugh. Thanks.

Recessionistas: If you have sworn off vacations because of this recession, what are you doing instead?

Over Memorial Day Weekend, my mom and I will fly up to San Francisco. My sister is flying out from Virginia, to meet us there. We’ve all been to SF before, but usually not together. We plan to stay in the City. We are all making our lists of things we want to do, and will brainstorm later. So far: a museum, a bookstore, a walking tour in North Beach, Chinatown, looking into a jazz club or other music venue, place for good glass of wine with a view, dinner at Fino one night, looking into a good Chinese restaurant, maybe we’ll check out the Carnaval and parade, a half day city bus tour, and who knows what else. I just know that we’re going to have a great time together, and can’t wait for May!

Comments of the Week 2/28 - 3/6

Congratulations to all!

Should Nadya 'Octomom' Suleman undergo psychological evaluation before she is allowed to bring her newborns home?

How about a psych. eval. for the doctor that implanted her. They ought to pull his license.

After Months in Hiding, John Edwards to Speak at Brown

I am thrilled to hear that John Edwards will be speaking at Brown. I have missed him. This is wonderful news.

In honor of Liz Smith, what's the one piece of gossip you have to share?

I stand with you Serena. I stand with Mugsy.

And for the record, I’m not gay, and I’m not religious.

I stand with you.

Do you think the press should be allowed to publish photos of slain soldiers' coffins as they're brought back to the U.S.?

Diana T,

Oh yes. I’ll never forget the shocking image of that poor little girl, in that photo. Just horrifying.

Great Depression Cooking With Clara Cannucciari (Video)

93 year old and she’s on You Tube… Go Clara!

Do you think the press should be allowed to publish photos of slain soldiers' coffins as they're brought back to the U.S.?

Phyllis,

Thank you for sharing this poem. I’ve read it twice and I’ll just say, it is so beautiful, right now it hurts to breathe.

Dear Margo: What to Do When Everything's Out of Whack

Phyllis,

You said it … Woman #1 needs some "generous help" … a support system. I hope she will find it, and with it, the strength to leave. She sees that this man gives her nothing, and her child nothing. He gives no emotional or financial support. He ignores them both, when he is at home. She is already alone in this "marriage." What does she stay for, except fear. I hope she will find a way to get out, as you say. Terribly sad. I am so lucky to have a lioness for a mother. Had that happened to her … to me, when I was little, my mom would have grabbed me up and we would have been gone in a blink. Wish everyone could be so lucky to have good parents, and to be strong in themselves. I wish I could tell this woman that if she can find the strenght to leave him, she and her child will be just fine. She will survive.

Dear Margo: What to Do When Everything's Out of Whack

Margo, I thought I was a bit glib there. Of course, people do have problems like these. A lot of weird people out there … re the cults, etc. Anyway, I think "Lonely" should forget about the family law attorney. No need for a cult restraining order … She should just get a Mover. Have her husbands things moved out. Then she should paint some weird devil type symbol on the front door, and her husband won’t come back in the house! Problem solved.

Do you think the press should be allowed to publish photos of slain soldiers' coffins as they're brought back to the U.S.?

YES. The people need to see what’s going on. If the family of the soldier does not object, they can do it. If the family does not want reporters involved, then they won’t do it. Some families want to share their loss with the American people. The real reason that was instituted had nothing to do with protecting hte family. That is just BS. It got put into place during Papa Bush’s administration. What happpened was they were showing on TV, bodies coming from back the first Iraaq war. There was another clip with Bush. He was joking around. He looked very bad. I’m not sure what he was joking around about. But it looked very bad. It was like a big thing at the time. So after that, he ordered that no TV crews, no reporters could be there. Clinton didn’t change that. Bush Jr. certainly didn’t want that changed. The whole purpose of it - it had nothing to do with protecting the family - the way they want to do it now, is the family’s right to privacy - it has to do with basically not letting the public be aware of the deaths resulting from the wars we are getting into. That’s why they blocked off so much access. The Vietnam war ended finally is because the public was furious. Every night on TV they saw clips of the war. I mean, I remember, I’d watch it, and see these big air bases being attacked from the air - you’d See the war. Of course, you never see the war now. And the people who are For war don’t want to show it to the public. They want to run their own war. But this is Our country, it’s not their country. And the Amer.ican people pay the cost of the war. The people that run it want to run it without our knowledge and consent. We should be able to see it!

Dear Margo: What to Do When Everything's Out of Whack

Dear "Lonely" … Get thee to a family law lawyer quick. And don’t pay one more dime toward your husband’s debts.

Dear "Stupid In Houston" … You answered your own question. While he’s fixing things up, fix yourself up … and go out … with someone else.

Margo, are these people for real? Good grief.
