Liz Smith: Tonight, Liza Minnelli Will Rise Again at the Palace Theater! And Who's the Biggest Concert Attraction Ever? (Video)

I was so fortunate to see Liza Minnelli 10 years ago at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. It was a cozy lttile theatre, tiny stage, just Liza and a pianist for two hours. Would love to see her again. She was wonderful.

Candice Bergen: A Flying Fool

The clip of Candice last night on Boston Legal was like a dream. Exquisite. It was a lovely tribute. When you all dream – do you envision yourselves as you are now – or in younger form? I always envision myself younger. I rode horses on our family farm and dream of that. Breeze in my hair, sweet smell of hay, warm sunshine. Young and strong.

What do you think of nuclear power as a viable energy source?

I’m Canadian - and in Ontario we have nuclear power - it is our main source of energy. It is reliable, economical and so far safe. Its been that way for a long time. My dad worked for one of the plants as an electrician - and can remember having guided tours of the facility as a little girl - it was unreal. I’m sure that would be impossible today due to security issues. There is worry as the plants get older that maintenance be kept up - but their building new reactors and it seems exceedingly sustainable.

Do you feel desensitized to reports of tragedy in the news?

When actual news is reported and reported well - I often feel overwhelmed with the suffering in the world and in our own communities - and appreciate hearing it - because it often makes me think. How do my reactions affect the world around me. How can I make a difference for someone else or make a change to better the environment, or become more educated about a world event or community. I appreciate the smarts, integrity and humanity that Diane Sawyer, Charlie Gibson, Cynthia McFadden, and Katie Couric, bring to the stories they relay. I have respect for what they report and pay attention. But I worry they are a dying breed. So much of the news is sensationalized horribly. So many new “reporters” seem to enjoy taking advantage of those who have been traumatized by events. To get that over the top story, get the most dramatic reaction or photo. They gloss over the fact that it is a human story they are telling, that people’s lives are being shattered and the pieces aren’t always going to get put back together. So much has been made of violent video games and how they desensitize – same could be said for many of the “news” programs today that repeat and rehash the same stories on a 24 hour loop.

You'd rather be ...

At a cottage on a pretty little lake, sitting on the beach with my toes in the sand reading a good book - right now - “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch. Sipping lemonade, listening to the birds chirp and the waves lap against the rocks.

Summer weekends are all about lying around. Finish this sentence - This weekend I want to lie around with ...

This weekend - off to see Sex and the City - again with a different set of gal pals - its fantastic. Then curling up in the sunshine with good book to relax and watch the garden sprout in this heat.

How do you feel about Hillary Clinton's announcement last night?

I feel proud of Hillary Clinton. Proud she played the game and played well. She stayed smart and capable. She didn’t cave in to the enormous pressure placed on her. How many could have honestly withstood it? She may not have won the nomination but she has certainly shattered that glass ceiling into a million little pieces. Would anyone expect Obama to step down gracefully if the situation were reversed. I don’t think so. I think he’d fight till the end. I hope he does and wins. We tell our little girls – “you can be anything you want – dream big”. That’s never been more true than it is today. Hillary’s is an amazing accomplishment – I would have liked to see her run. It would have been interesting. Now we look forward – to Obama and the national campaign. But for today - I’m proud.

Lily Tomlin: When the 'Murphy Brown' Show Ended, I Cried My Eyes Out

Lily some of my favorite Murphy Brown episodes were with Kay and Murphy going head to head. The fireworks were fantastic and the respect and friendship that seemed to grow between those two strong and fiercely independent characters was just the best. Great writing for great women. I do miss watching, wish the last season would come out on DVD. Its nice to know that you had fun doing it.

What television show do you miss the most?

Murphy Brown the most - wish that more than the first season was available on DVD.

If you could live inside a movie, which would it be?

Divine Secrets of the YA YA Sisterhood - gotta love those YaYa’s. How wonderful to be part of such a close group of women. They know your history and love you unconditionally anyway.

Should Sen. Clinton pack it in?

Why is it that we expect her to drop out? Is it because she’s a woman – suddenly she’s a spoiler. Clinton demonstrates a lot of the grit and determination we’d expect a president to possess. She believes that she is the best person to clean up this colossal mess Bush has created – and lets face it we likely don’t know the half of it yet. If Obama is to be the candidate – let him earn it. He’s shifting attention to McCain instead of today’s primary - he doesn’t expect to win and hasn’t campaigned for those votes – perhaps that indicates he doesn’t care. Will he care when he’s the democratic nominee – will those votes suddenly start to matter? Obama’s feathers ruffle easily, he angers easily, he doesn’t seem to respect the views of those who differ from his own. How will he hold up in presidential campaign or will he be constantly defensive? Clinton is strong, she knows who she is and what she wants. Don’t drop out because it will make the boys feel better.

Case Closed: 'Boston Legal' and the Truly Supreme Supremes

The show is consistently stunning. This episode was especially dynamic as was the week before when Spader and Bergen argued for the right to let her character’s father die with dignity. Both were exceptionally informative and moving. The show makes you laugh and think at the same time which is rare these days.

Who Is She? The Final Episode

Loved the story - anytime you think of another Sheila I’m happy to read it. The irony that its somehow less of a betrayal because its a male friend. WOWOWOW!!

Does a Little Obama 'Elitism' Go a Long Way in Politics?

There is no doubt that Clinton and Obama are both intelligent, well spoken and dynamic. Both are elite, both have been blessed with opportunity. When it comes to those struggling and hurting in the States and around the world I believe that Clinton is the one who really gets it. Hillary listens and genuinely appears to work for positive change. I was so hopeful when I first heard Obama speak at the democratic convention a few years ago. I thought here is promise for tomorow - what a bright light - and you know what - I still think that. But I also think that Clinton should take it this time - she has the best chance of stabilizing the country, and rebuilding a damaged international repuatation for the States once again. I think that when Obama appears to be condescending, which is more and more often, that it is really inexperience shining through.
