Barack Obama Turns Children Into Believers, by Vishakha N. Desai

I had the same experience, my young niece and nephew were all about Obama over my Thanksgiving visit. I think they are too young to have realized the prejudice (or maybe not), but how cool it is that that barrier is now lifted from even possibly limiting their ideas of their own potential. That is what this election did, not eliminate prejudice or bigotry, but end the sense that one’s color is the overriding determinant of what one can achieve..

The Love Goddess: To Bed or Not to Bed, That Is the Question

I agree to each his own, but tend to think for the majority, at least a good dose of sex is needed to keep marriage partners bonded in an intimate way. Sex connects you in a way that talking, hanging out just doesn’t. And this may be sexist, but I have to wonder if its really true that this woman’t husband doesn’t care that they don’t have sex. I’ve never met such a man.

Obama Girls Headed to Sidwell Friends

Yes, this wasn’t an independent decision—he considered his kids preferences, and I’m sure the fact that Malia felt more comfortable at Sidwell, where there are already kids there she knows and likes (the Biden grandchildren) played a part in the decision. And on Barry—it was a nickname his father also used when he first came over, and although it seems you are using it in a disparaging manner (and a bit overfamilar given his position) its quite a beautiful name, and what’s wrong with nicknames??

The Biggest Turkey of Them All! by Liz Smith

Liz—I’m with you on the Merry Christmas front. I am tired of trying to make everyone happy w Happy Holidays, which actually pleases just about nobody. Hanukkah, I’m told, is a minor Jewish holiday, which the politically correct elevate to sound like they are being fair. On Rosie/Barbara, the curious part to me is why its so important to BW that the co-hosts are all “friends”. I think Rosie kicked this round off to get publicity for her show, but come on, how many of us would get our panties in a bunch over someone saying, as Rosie did, that the View co-hosts have a professional, not real friends, relationship. Who cares? Obviously BW does. Why is that? Be happy with a successful show and if friendship results fine. If it doesn’t, then fine. How many of us are true friends with our co-workers? Not that many, in my opinion.

What do you think of Warren Buffett's suggestion that we buy big cars now because they are so cheap?

Sounds like short term, one-dimensional thinking to me. Will they be a good deal throughout the years one has one—ie are the repair and gas costs comparable to a smaller car or a hybrid? It seems to me that in the long run, a cheaper SUV will not save someone money over the long run. Perhaps he has some stock in these US automakers?

Cynthia McFadden Recalls Vitriolic Remarks Among John McCain Supporters Election Night

Don’t you two realize you’re doing exactly what Cynthia, Candice, and Liz were dismayed with in this article? Look in the mirror. And with thanksgiving around the corner, be thankful you live in a society with peaceful (if not gracious) transfer of power.

Julia Reed on the 'Grating Superority' and 'Absolute Smugness' of Obama Supporters

Julia—don’t know how you got the idea that Boston Legal was just a light-hearted entertainment show. You haven’t been watching closely. For years they have tweaked the audiences minds and consciences by championing liberal ideas thinly cloaked in the cases taken up by the firm. I didn’t see the episode in question, but yesterday many Republicans voted for Obama, Denny wasn’t the only one.

Whoopi Goldberg: We Have Finally Become Part of the Fabric of the United States of America

Whoopi—I know I can’t quite understand how you and other blacks feel right now, but like so many others, tears fell down my cheeks when it was announced that Obama was over 270 and the crowd in Grant Park and everywhere went wild. I didn’t expect to cry, but I felt a joy and relief, even my cynical self said -A new day is dawning. Things will be hard, and I expect many bumps and some wrong turns, but I can’t shake the belief that we are going in the right direction. And like you, I loved McCain’s speech. I hope he stays engaged and is integral to the work of the next Congress and administration. **most moving quote of the night to me came from Donna Brazile who said that the steps of the Capitol were laid by her slave ancestors. Nearly 200 years later, a black man is going to climb those stairs, raise his hand and take the oath of office to be the president of all of us.

How accurate is the 7-Eleven Presidential Coffee Cup Poll?

Interesting poll. Will hold onto the percentages and see what happens election day. But so far they have a good track record. And 7-Eleven is definitely a place where all types of people mix. Time to get another cup of coffee!

From Queen Elizabeth to Mary-Kate, Mr. Blackwell's Ten All-Time Worst-Dressed Women

I adore the queen. Fashion is such a personal thing. I agree with a few of his choices, especially Bjork.

From Queen Elizabeth to Mary-Kate, Mr. Blackwell's Ten All-Time Worst-Dressed Women

Try googling him. Regis was quoting from his obit this morning on Regis and Kelly. Very interesting story, born in Bensonhurst, changed his name, and also Mr. Blackwell was a pseudonym on top of the name change.

Do your families have any stories of surviving the Great Depression and, if so, how did they influence you?

My grandparents and dad (mom is a bit younger) all lived through the depression. My grandma never bought anything on credit, and to the end, would always look for a bargain, she got her dining room chairs from a “blue-light” K-mart special. Not that she was poor, but she was always saving what she could for the future. My dad never had a credit card, his motto was if you can’t just buy it outright, you had to wait until you had enough money. He started working at 14 to help support his family, my grandfather at times held 3 jobs to make ends meet. I never thought we’d see those days again, but it may well be.

Who won round 2 of the presidential debates last night?

McCain seemed uncomfortable and edgy. He walked around while Obama was talking and couldn’t contain his dislike of O. His voice was a whispery lisp. And most of all, he had no good answers to Obama’s criticism that he voted against alternative energy, will implement a plan that will tax health benefits, and supported deregulation through the years.

Liz Smith: They Said What? Politics and More From the Mouths of the Bold-Faced

“Western doctors were concerned about a growing demand for designer vaginas.” What is a designer vagina? Thought I had heard it all, but shown once again not. Caught a bit of “The Girls Next Door” last night, and Holly got a mold of her privates, which was then used to pour liquid chocolate into,so she could have a chocolate vagina. Thought that was beyond the pale, but this story tops that easily.

Emmy Awards Fashion Watch: Which 40+ Women Were the Best Dressed?

My fav was Kyra Sedgwick, one I really liked that wasn’t mentioned was Brooke Shields, she gets more beautiful every year. One dress that wasn’t flattering in color or style was one worn by Mary Tyler Moore.
