Encourage him to sign on as a front man for the Palin trip….it’s gonna be a fabulous ride on MSM. And then when he comes back/home…four, eight, twelve years from now, you get to remind him, ever so kindly, did you not learn the story at your home-schoolers knee,…. about the prodigal son? While I’m at it…….one doesn’t "outgrow" puns…..we grow into them..(trust me on this)..It at least takes a smarty-pants four-year old who has listened to a happy/silly (and literate would be good) bunch of tall people talking..It takes a canon..(one "N") to get to punning…..

Dear MM….I don’t understand the fault-finding..re: intelligence and preparation. It comes up so often. Today it occurs to me to ask…"would you want your elementary school child/grandchild to read a post you wrote that smacks of anti-intellectualism?"Let’s just call  it what it is…"anti-smart" or, if you prefer, "pro-ignurnt"….Tell that to your grandchildren who are going to have to make their way on this complex planet…"Nana are you a Democrat or a Republican or an Independent?" "Naw, I’m just pro-ignurnt, sweetie…"

  "Yep, honey… we’re downright poor, darlin’, but don’t you worry….you just keep blowin’ off your homework and ignorin’ teachers who teach those hard subjects you think are stupid except if you want to be a contestant on Jeopardy or Celebrity Password.. Granny’s tellin’ you…you ain’t never going to have to worry ‘bout gettin’ into no Harvard and nobody…nobody is gonna get by with calling you an elitist as long as there’s breath in my body..and if Tiffany says that again I’ll whip her step-mom’s ass.."  This is just not a decent message for young people….straight up and or/thinly veiled…not prudent…

I find great fault with anyone who speaks of higher education only in terms of college and advanced advanced advanced degrees. That’s not right either, in my tiny book. At the very least, we might begin to speak about "continuing education"…aren’t we all engaged in that?

Some of my closest and dearest friends and extended family have learned livelihoods either in tech schools or woods or graduate schools or  barns or junior year abroad in Tuscany or the realm of hard knocks at a grandfather’s knee. They are still learning. Yeah, I can read a little Latin and know where most of the countries are….but for the life of me, channel locks (the kind you hold…not blocking cable channels on TV..) still make me nuts….and I don’t know where to dig ginseng and sell it at the co-op…  I value the differences among us….and the individuals. So I could call all these folks whose skillsets (not skillets…skillsets) aren’t mine "elitists"? Don’t think so. I call ‘em smart as a tack.

I was really late finding Ms.Palin on my radar…pretty much after she was tapped for veep…and wanted to admire her in terms of being a successful woman. Hell, I admire Ann Coulter for "making it". Doesn’t mean I have to buy into what they offer. I don’t. I would like not to touch the GWB comment w/a five-tine fork and won’t. Admiring militant ignorance is not a cool notion.

On high school graduation night several years ago, my neighbor’s graduating son  came out on the back stoop to announce to the neighborhood …"Listen, all y’all…I done grajjated high school….wa-Hooo!  I ain’t never gonna have to learn another G**D*** thang..!" We just groaned and said…oh you poor bastard…who taught you that?
