To ensure that there are no safe havens for terrorists, would you support keeping troops in Afghanistan for the next five years?

No matter how many troops we send to Afghanistan, we’ll never win. The Taliban live in Afghanistan and they’re not going away. The real problem now is in Pakistan where people are being killed by the Taliban. If Pakistan invites into their country to help them, we shoud go. Throwing more lives and money into Afghanistan could go on for years and years with no decent outcome. It’s a fool’s errand.

Are you for or against allowing consumers to buy health-care insurance across state lines? (Why or why not?)

Every time I walk into a doctor’s office I feel like I’m dealing with the mafia. Not because of the doctor but because of the insurance companies behind the doctor. There is no regulation of insurance companies. They can do what they want to sick people, to doctors, to poor people. Of all the developed countries in the world we have the worst health care system. If a person can get better health care or better insurance across state lines, then they should be able to do it. The whole system needs an overhaul, but I’m not hopeful this will happen in my lifetime.

Liz Smith: Lindsay Lohan – Nobody's 'Over' at 23

Actually, she is talented. Which is why Liz Smith says not to count her out.

wowOwow Executive Intern: Is it Oogly When People My Age Use Facebook as a Business Opportunity?

This author sounds woefully uptight. I’m over sixty, have young and old friends on FB, and once in a while we get into interesting discussions (last one was on "personality driven economics"). My previous professors and classmates are on FB and it’s nice to keep in touch that way. Exulting over an achievement by posting on FB is simply a way to let your friends share your joy. Never occurred to me that it was boasting or obnoxious. And all of my friends who are in business for themselves use Facebook to keep in touch. It’s online socializing and usually is good for business. If FB makes you nervous, stick to email.

If you were to start a business today, what kind of business do you think would be the most recession-proof?

I’d open a liquor store. Booze is still selling. Wine sales are up.

Nothing is more recession proof than a 100 proof.

Elizabeth Edwards Calls Rielle Hunter 'Pathetic' in Memoir Resilience

Just recently on The View, Elizabeth Edwards told the women that even if the baby is John’s she won’t leave him. Then she said something that made my jaw drop, "I just wish the whole thing would go away." Perhaps the cancer drugs are affecting her brain but it was one of the most obvious displays of cognitive dissonance I’ve ever seen. Why on earth would she write a book and do a book tour if she wishes it "would go away?" She’s much sicker than she knows and probably should stay home and get more bed rest.

Liz Smith: Jane Fonda – She's Finally 'Legit' at Sardi's

You really should read Jane Fonda’s book. Even with the service of your brother and many brave soldiers, Vietnam was an idiotic war. My father was a military man, and he said, "It’s ridiculous to send men into a war where they can’t tell the friends from the enemies." Iraq is an even worse mistake. Jane fingered the politicians, the leaders, who sent the soldiers to die.

She was passionate, true and patriotic, and I supported her all the way. Now she’s fantastic in "33 Variations." an interesting play about life and the other side. She never stops learning, listening and revising her opinions. She is nobody’s fool.

Liz Cheney: Obama Should Stop Bashing My Dad, Cherry-Picking Intelligence (Video)

Excellent summary.

And all unforgettably true.

As the Russians would say, "It would be funny if it weren’t so sad."

Julia Reed Answers the Media Takedown of Elizabeth Edwards

I totally agree with you. This whole public breast beating by the Edwards is nauseating. What a pair. They deserve each other.

The Etceterist: Go For It, Sarah Palin!

What’s not being reported is that Palin went to Prada for a $100,000 shopping spreeeeeee. They closed the store for her and her security guards and let her pick out whatever she wanted. I don’t know who paid for it. I think her next gig should be Sex and the City.

If Whoopi Goldberg Could Pick Obama's Running Mate ...

Joe Biden. When Powell fell from grace, heads of state of other countries called Biden to find out what was going on with Rummy, Cheney and Bush. Biden is the smartest (which is why he talks so much), knows all the players and where the bodies are buried. And he’s a good guy.

If Whoopi Goldberg Could Pick Obama's Running Mate ...

Richardson looked and sounded great in the debates. I wondered why he hadn’t any traction and asked a lobbyist friend who works in government about it. He said Richardson doesn’t do so well behind the scenes.
