What would Tim want us to be doing to honor his life’s work and mission? He was a graduate of my alma mater law school — Cleveland Marshall College of Law / Cleveland State University — no doubt its most famous alumnus. I think he might be pleased if the wow0wow family (dysfunctional at times, but what family isn’t?) began to have serious, substantive discussions about the kinds of issues he often covered on his network broadcasts. One topic which I’d like to have this website weigh in on is a measure that the U.S. could adopt which would instantaneously reduce its dependence on imported oil in a very big way, and which only one of our presidents was brave enough to champion. He’s still the most courageous living former president and I don’t think I have to be more specific than that. Why not immediately lower speed limits nation wide to 50 miles per hour? Trucking companies are already imposing lower limits on their drivers, and this is something that is a no-brainer as I see it. Of course it could be political suicide for either McCain or Obama to support it during the campaign, so it won’t be mentioned if our candidates can possibly avoid it. But I think it’s time to begin a conversation that would pave the way for Congress and the next president to push for it in the first 100 days of the new administration. Comments anyone? I think I know how Tim Russert would pursue this if he were still with us. Aloha O`e, ‘Big Guy’. You are, and will be missed. And … how about some serious detailed discussion about exactly how Barak Obama should extricate us from the Iraq debacle in a way that will not label the Democratic Party for decades to come as the party that “lost Iraq” (or lost the Middle East?) forgot that (if i ever knew it) — no wonder her legacy has stayed as positive as it has. Did you all know there’s a Museum of ‘first ladies’ somewhere in the Midwest? I learned about it on Fox news or one of those when some poor legislator had the chutzpa to add a pittance for it as an “earmark.” Of course all hell broke loose on the conservative media, but the museum’s curator (the legislator’s wife or mother) did a wonderful interview in which she took the interviewer (a man of course) and Fox to task. Seems the “earmark” was a small fraction of the museum’s operating budget, it was a very respected non for profit corporation in the community, and everyone loved it because of its effect on a tourist trade that otherwise would have been unimpressive. I laughed till I had to get up for a hankie. (I don’t use tissue for environmental reasons. Likewise, I do my dishes and laundry the way my mother was taught when she was growing up in the 20’s and 30’s in dustbowl Kansas.) By the way, I love the way this new version of the website makes it far more difficult for the harpies to trash it (and those of us who don’t sing from the same hymn book.)

Defending Renata and the individual most of us wish would take a VERY long walk on the beach for their persistence and their rhetorical skills is absurd, IG. And it certainly isn’t what they need. Mental health counseling would be far more appropriate. In some ways you are the worst of the bunch IG — and maybe you should be looking around for someone to defend you. However, I guess we all have to admire your chutzpa. Defending this Hillary hating, hypocritical, coven of harpies is like defending “Brownie’s” handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It’s early afternoon here in paradise, DT — and the weather is fine …

Perhaps one day Air Force One will go down in a “snowstorm” and a man we knew little or nothing about who was picked to “balance the ticket” (a closet right to lifer?) will succeed to the office of The World’s President, and we’ll all rue the day that Senator Obama did not stand up to his Hillary Clinton hating supporters (you’re clearly not one, lavern, i’m just using this reply as a convenient place to post on this subject) and do what in his heart he knew to be the right thing by choosing Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate — no, I’m not playing the ‘assassination card’, and Sen. Clinton wasn’t either — she’s a realist — they don’t call it the USKKKofA for nothing, and it didn’t start at Trinity United, the largest UCC congregation in the world — if the Hillary Haters were aware of the percentage of American presidents who have been assassinated or been the victim of an attempted assassination they might reconsider their positions (probably not). You are a wonderful thinker and writer, Joni, and I don’t think you were directly called a racist. What they do here is exactly what Bill O’reiley does and all bullies do. You’ve got to learn to fight back or simply walk/run away to fight another day in a more worthwhile cause. It’s not the vileness that is being celebrated, Joni; each of us has some of that in some (hopefully) hidden corner. It’s this seething powerful sometimes frightening force generated by an older but in many ways much more attractive generation of female gladiators. Take heart. the time difference is 6 hours now, ulla. Michael is called Misha in L.A. and Honolulu by many of his friends — I know him well and I think he’s a wonderful though at times misunderstood man. He’s visiting his son Kaua’i right now and they’re camping on the Na Pali Coast. He loved the line about he boy trying to play on the girl’s baseball team. he was once on a girl’s softball team. Welcome him when he gets back around the end of June.
