We are having this discussion because of the concern of many of us about the tremendous waste of taxpayer $$$ the Bushes are needlessly costing us by forcing the Obamas to stay at a hotel. And that is a legitimate gripe! I’m sure with the economic crises (gratis, Bush and Republicans) and other issues, Obama is not going to make a stink about Blair House. However, those of us at WOW are not engaged in getting out an economic stimulus package, and are free to speak our minds. I don’t like rhetoric like “Republican hate flame,” either, because it lumps all “Republicans” together, and there is WAY too much of that. Assessments — usually critical — about “Dems,” Republicans, conservatives, or liberals (especially liberals) are tossed around all the time, and only fan the “hate flame” whereever it burns. Yes, I do make confrontational comments, but I try to focus on specific statements, or ideas, etc. that I consider objectionable, rather than engage in generalized, indiscrimiate, wholesale attacks. I apologize for hijacking your comment to vent!

I feel sorry for all the Democratic women in N.Y. government/politics who have worked for the state party for years, even decades, who will likely get passed over for Ms. Kennedy. Women (or men) who have worked for the NY Dem. Party for years should be considered for the post, rather than a neophyte who has not paid her dues!!! It was the same thing with HRC — she went to NY by way of Illinois, Arkansas, and DC, just in time to establish residency to run for the Senate. At least Hillary ran in an election, like a real party pro! I think picking Kennedy will send the wrong message to party loyalists. Twice NY Dem. women who would be logical candidates to fill a Senate seat (not that it has to go to a woman) have seen their chances to attain higher office usurped by an outsider with a big name. Now that a Dem. governor has the authority to name the next Senator, IMO the women in the party should make it clear that they do not want this opportunity handed to someone who has not paid her (or his) dues.

Carmel—You raise a good question. Just what was Bristol’s “reputation” that was supposedly trashed by reporting that she is a high school drop-out? Did she have the reputation of being an honor student? She had the reputation of being an unwed pregnant teenager! I think a lot of unwed pregnant teenagers would prefer to be known as high-school dropouts, but then Sarah’s judgment is questionable about so many things!

Marjorie — Happy Obama Year! I agree that there is a market for the photos, but let’s face it, the parents are adults & don’t have to sell, either. They should be held to the same standard as all parents — i.e., do what is best for their baby. Even if the public created a “market” for the photos, they have to be mature enough to say “No.” I assume that you are sympathetic toward them and just want to get people off their back, but is it really doing them a favor to make excuses for them?

Let me see — We have one (1) Washington Post reporter writing something about Prez-elect Obama’s physical condition in Hawaii in 2008; and one (1) different reporter expressing a somewhat critical opinion of Geo. W’s fitness regime 3 years earlier, and you and Jim H. draw huge conclusions from this. WHAT????? If either you or Jim H. had any logical analytical skills, you would see that these two disparate events PROVE NOTHING, NADA, SQUAT! Two different reporters, 3 or more years apart, apparently have different views on a president’s fitness regime. Can you begin to fathom how many reporters there are in this country covering politics? Do you think it is surprising that there are 2 reporters who have different views regarding this issue (which is really not very interesting IMO)? If you THOUGHT about it (and if you bother to read articles about how Obama looks coming out of the ocean, or how Geo. W looks while running), you would realize that a grand total of 2 articles separated by 3 years ESTABLISHES NOTHING! It certainly does not show some “Boogeyman” MSM industry-wide bias!
