My heart breaks you and for this terrible feeling of violation, and even though these are “just things,” the loss is compounded by the thievery. I stored belongings in a NYC storage place, part of a national chain (Easy Space Storage), and someone entered the unit with a metal detector, found my 20+ year collection of Southwest Native American jewelry and stole it. I was devastated, as I had collected these with great care from artist families I knew. The company was horrible, said I took a risk by storing my things, and would not even return calls until I notified the police. I still grieve for these lovely things, and feel rage at the storage company.
