Alabama Shooter Michael McLendon Kills at Least 9, Self

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.  And the gory details have only begun to emerge.  Gun control isn’t the answer…even though I would like to see a bit more.  I’m not sure there’s any way to predict or prevent this type of psychic melt-down.  But if the frequency of these deadly rampages is increasing, I’d like to see somebody looking at broader "underlying" predictors.  Just makes me want to hold my6 family close, that’s all.

Uproar Over Church's Excommunications of Brazil Doctors Who Performed Abortion on Abused 9-Year-Old

Poor Michaelangelo.  All that work.  Maybe someday we’ll see that the Vatican is a museum piece.

Cramer, Stewart to Face Off on 'The Daily Show' Thursday (Video)

Where’s Jon Stewart’s Cronkite Award?  That’s what I wanna know.

Clinton Allies Aiding NY Sen. Gillibrand

Not too surprising.  Gillibrand’s probably lucky to have the support.  I imagine Clinton had a few items on her Senatorial agenda that she’s hoping her former staff can bring to fruition.  But the last distraction she needs in the midst of this international crisis is local politics.

Group Raising Money for Palin White House Run

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Obama Establishing White House Women's Council

Wow.  First Lilly Ledbetter.  Now this!  I hope this council will have a strong voice!  And I hope my daughters will find ways to make the most of it.

Prop 8 Is About More Than Gay Marriage

I’ll never understand why some people need to turn something that’s so simple and so logical into a big, ugly mess.  No!  No, no, no!  Pure and simple.  This isn’t complicated.  It’s a human rights issue, and it’s time for the legal discrimination against the LGTB community to END!  It’s unconstitutional.  You just can’t deny any two people the right to marry, any more than you can deny any two people the right to divorce.  And if there are legal rights attached to marriage, they should be there for everybody who enters into that life-style…a married life-style.  ‘Cause you certainly lose those rights when you break up.

Rise 'n' Shine: What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?

"What time is it?"  This is always my first thought.  It’s part of my charm.  I start judging my performance from the first instant of  consciousness, and set other hurdles throughout the day.  I don’t set an alarm.  I used to sleep through them even if it had been screaming for thirty minutes, so I just stopped.  I’m trying to train myself to wake up on my own around 6:30 every day.  And I’m getting better at it all the time, but since there’s rarely any urgent reason (i.e. somebody else needs me to be somewhere else) for me to be awake, inconsistency isn’t disastrous.

The day, the weather sinks in once Henry and I get a quick taste of the outdoors.  (I have a bathrobe that’s warmer than any winter coat.)

When I’m good, Henry’s fed and the bed is made and I’m up and washed and dressed and coffee’d and journaled by 9am.  Then I check my e-mail and all the wowOwow alerts; and then, no later than noon, tear myself away to try to accomplish something of consequence.

When I’m not-so-good, Henry’s fed, and I’m in my jammies, puttering around, staring at wowOwow, doing little of consequence til late afternoon.

Couric Wins Cronkite Award for Palin Interview

Clearly, everybody has an opinion - many quite the passionate opinion - about the Couric-Palin interview.  That says it all, if you ask me.

Congratulations to Katie Couric and all the other winners of this presitigious honor.

Couric Wins Cronkite Award for Palin Interview

Thanks, Margaret.  This makes a little more sense of things.

Bank Cites Headscarf for Asking Muslim Woman to Leave Line

ahem….that should read "being a conflict" not "being in conflict".

Bank Cites Headscarf for Asking Muslim Woman to Leave Line

Well, I sure admire the way I’ve seen you stand your ground on any number of threads.  Sorry you had to deal with a berserker employee.  What sort of policy could you implement to make sure that sort of thing never happened a second time. I don’t know where you’d draw the line, but I do see an infringement of religious practice being in conflict with this policy.  Seems like credit unions would be better equipped than most financial institutions to set up some sort of card swipe security to the bank lobby, since every depositer is a "member" with a card. (Did you notice, the wow staff changed to photo at the top of the article to woman wearing a less-threatening habib?  Hmmm.)

Jacky Chatelain, French Winemaker, Admits to Poisoning Wife 'Who Worked Too Hard'

I often think about the people standing around a woman’s grave in the 1800’s consoling her grieving husband, saying, "We’re so sorry, Jeb.  We know you didn’t mean to hit her so hard."  I’m so glad some have changed.

Majority of Americans See Next '30s-Era Depression

I’ll be the first one to admit that I have no idea.  But at this point, I tend to doubt it.
