Whoopi Goldberg: We Have Finally Become Part of the Fabric of the United States of America

Wow! I am now so full of joy and pride in my country. Whoopi’s note was so well said as are the comments above. I wish I had a better command of the English language. Now we can all move ahead and work together to pull our America together again. I too was impressed with McCain’s speech and thought to myself “that is the old John McCain.” I could only cry as I watched the final results - the faces of so many that have been struggling so much with tears of hope for a good future streaming down their faces. What a big job Obama has ahead of him - I could only imagine how he felt last night. It must be very overwhelming (and that is an understatement). Joe Biden is a good man as well, with a good family. What a feeling - what a feeling! We must all do our part to bring America back to the way it should be. Yippeeee!

Is it taboo to ask strangers who they are voting for?

I voted no but only because I was thinking more of the people I’ve heard at headquarters making calls and asking, the people who are canvassing, etc. I would never think of asking anyone who they are voting for myself and don’t talk about who I am voting for. Only if it comes up in conversation. My husband and I, having been in the legal field for years, get calls each election time from neighbors and friends asking which Judges we are going to vote for. This is good - unless you have personal experience you just don’t know who is good and bad in many of the local elections and with that in mind I think asking who someone is voting for is just fine (information seeking).

Is your vote in tomorrow's Presidential Election decided?

Oh yes - we voted early for Barack! I hope you have a wonderful day Patty - what a great plan - all prepared for the lines rather than those who will be grumbling about the wait. I remember hearing about Obama after the Democratic Convention before this and then when I heard his speech announcing he was running he made me cry. He continues to give me the hope we are so desperate for and brings tears of joy to my eyes each time I hear him. Like someone else said he has a tremendous job ahead of him - repairing all the damage of the last 8 years and he will certainly need our prayers. AND, good luck Californians on your oh, so important propositions!

Do you think Sarah Palin should run for president in 2012?

Amen to all (almost) of the above. Could anyone be more of an embarrassment to us than George Bush? She certainly would. Good thing that will never happen!! I would be embarrassed by her if I simply lived in Alaska and she was my Governor.

What traditional technology do you still use?

And you know what Lily - you will outlive us all!! I picture you living in a beautiful cottage with flowers and greenery all around you, just like we see in the magazines! How wonderful you make it all sound… Now, here I sit in the desert, nothing but rocks and brown all around. We try to have a lawn and put plants in pots so we can move them around out of the sun. We have to pay extra if we go over that certain level of water usage each month. Everything is a battle. I find myself so busy I can’t enjoy life like I would like to, like I planned and dreamed retirement would be. Your life sounds like a dream to me!!

The Dos and Don’ts of Aging Gracefully

After working for many years and having to dress up and wear makeup every day, color my hair, I have finally, after a year of being retired, reached the point where I can go out in public without makeup, maybe just a little blush. The mirror still causes me a bit of trouble but I try to stay away from it. I no longer color my hair and it is short and a beautiful color. (If anybody cares, Pantene makes a shampoo especially for gray hair that keeps it looking a lovely color.) I don’t want to get sloppy and careless in my dress but I think at our age we can dress more comfortably and not be criticized like a young person would (?). I really really want to live to be 110 or so but I do want to keep my mind and body working properly if possible. I notice a change when I go out into the world, people treating me with the respect I used to treat elderly people. So, I guess I’m old now but I’m happy and healthy and loving life! The sun is shining and life is good.

What traditional technology do you still use?

I loved the comments generated by this poll. Puts me in a nostalgic mood. I have to tell my husband about the “strings too short to save.” And I thought he was a pack rat! I have gone very techy since I retired a year ago. Recently was gifted with the iPod Touch and I am loving it. Unlike the young’uns, I keep the volume just high enough to be enjoyed and I still hear “outside” noises. I put my shopping lists on there and carry it with me. Have my little games on it. I have some audio CD’s that I feel like I never have the time to listen to in the house, never drive enough to listen in the car but yesterday I learned how to put them on the iPod and as I did laundry, puttered around here, I was able to listen to one of those CD’s that were gathering dust on the shelf. My dad who is 94 now has never had a computer and all these modern things totally throw him for a loop. I remember once when he got a new “used” car and he was so thrilled to show us it actually had buttons that make the windows go up and down. All his cars, until he had to give driving up due to macular degeneration, had the old 8-track player. The computer and the DVR are indispensible items to me. I miss the wonderful smell of laundry that has been hung outside. We initially lived in Wyoming - I remember one time I came up with the idea of having cement under the clothesline so the snow could be shoveled off. I kept telling my first husband I wanted “ce-mint” under my clothesline. He thought I was crazy and didn’t understand why I wanted mint under the line. Remember how the clothes used to freeze nearly before you got them hung up and your hands stuck to the clothesline? Take care all!

Obama to Suspend Campaign to Visit Ailing Grandmother 'Toot'

Again, shows what kind of man he is. At this point in the campaign that he would choose to spend time with his Toot is a wonderful thing. I only wish he could have more time with her than he will. Our prayers go with him for a safe trip and comfort for the family in what lies ahead.

What inspires your wardrobe choices in the morning?

My big thing is whether or not I have to wear that darn bra!! Go Whoopi!! Since I retired my wardrobe is much more relaxed. If I can stay home and be in a t-shirt and jeans that is just great! I actually haven’t had a dress on in so long I can’t remember when it was! I prefer winter clothes much more than summer … sweaters, cordoroys and socks!

Will you watch the final presidential debate tonight?

I cannot stand to see or hear McCain for one more minute. I could listen to Obama for hours. The Repubs have gotten so dirty and nasty it just makes me disgusted and I can’t stand to read it in the paper or see it on TV! Got our ballet books in the mail today - yippee! Our early voting starts Saturday - can’t wait.

What factors might motivate you to relocate outside of America?

If the election goes back to the republicans I would like to say “we are outa heah!” We’ve often talked about finding our own private island. As things have gotten more serious we have really thought about Canada. However, at this age to pick up and move like that seems like a task beyond my capabilities. And, like Joan says, to leave family? Unless the election is again rigged, though, I really think the Democrats will win and in time we will have our America back! Take care all!

If you were asked to run for vice president of the U.S. tomorrow, truthfully, what would you say?

I woke up this morning perplexed about how I was going to fit laundry, babysitting, planting fall plants, etc. and etc. all in one day. Politics? I don’t think so! I’ll limit my politics to stuffing envelopes and data entry, thank you very much…

Could you live without meat?

I too, agree with Diana. And, I would say, if I lived alone I would eat a lot differently. Having to have food around to feed a hungry man makes a difference for sure. Every now and then I have to have an Outback Prime Rib or, like you say, Lorraine, the In-N-Out Burger. Although I live in Las Vegas I’m not familiar with the Burger Bar. Might be well worth checking out!

Whoopi Goldberg: Let People Have as Many Kids as They Please if They Can Afford It

Oh Whoopi - you are the best! I continue to love your attitude totwards everything and watching you on the View so we can all get to know what a great person you are has been wonderful. I do think that, unfortunately, too many people don’t use common sense when it comes to having babies. Its so easy to keep popping out those sweet little babies. Most of my children still go to a church that encourages mom to stay home and have babies. All but one have stopped with 4 or less, but I have a daughter who is now pregnant with her 5th and she also has a stepdaughter. They are living off the church, WIC, and Medicaid because the husband who I keep quiet about, but have become very disenchanted with, can’t seem to find a job that suits him. At least he doesn’t quit a job until he finds a new one but … one day all these kids are going to want to go to college, in this case 4 boys will be encouraged to go on missions which are very expensive. So, again, I would just say, it would just be nice if they use a little common sense and think ahead before popping out a dozen (certainly not cheaper by the dozen). That guy who took his 9 kids and left them at the hospital because he couldn’t care for them … how sad for those little ones.

Happy Birthday, U.S. Constitution! What amendment is most important to you?

Great comments! I also first thought of women’s right to vote and then realized the freedom of speech had to come first. This web site is a perfect example of our freedom of speech! I love it … were it not for my busy life interferring I could sit here all day and really scope out EVERYTHING on here! Alas, I must take care of the dogs, clean house, go babysit the grandchildren and spend time with a visiting grandson from New York. Oh, Obama is here in Las Vegas today and although we can’t get there as early as I want we are certainly excited to listen to him in person yet again. Yippee!
