Liz Smith: Sophia Loren in 'The Best Movie I've Ever Done!'

Finally, something to look forward to from Hollywood. Unfortunately, they don’t cater to women very much, if at all. But I will happily give them my money for "Nine."

Liza Donnelly's Cartoon of the Week: Squirreling It Away

Wow. I never thought to hide money in books. However, I will consider, after this lovely cartoon, an "old hollow log!" Thanks, Liza.

Madame Secretary, by Cynthia McFadden

Great interview! I’m proud of Hillary. She could have retired and gone on the lecture circuit. Instead, she’s working to make the world a better place.

Thanks for this collection of beautiful women, WOW. I would be curious how many of these women raised families while excelling in their careers. I’d love to know how they did both.

Liz Smith: Brooke Astor's Sad Legacy – Money Changes Everything

I suppose it is a good thing that most of my worth is in internal treasure, as opposed to external.

What do you think accounts for a recent report by Time magazine that women are less happy than they were 40 years ago?

My guess is that more women are stressed and overwhelmed than ever, given the growing number of us who are the breadwinners in the family. (BTW, anyone know the origins of the word ‘breadwinner’? I’m curious and would love to know.)

Highlights From 'The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Changes Everything'

I wonder how many women in our nation actually feel more powerful, more confident and more content, given this shifting tide. My guess is that, overall, this nation of female breadwinners feels more stressed and overwhelmed than ever. Although, if this study helps put more attention on women’s issues (issues I feel passionate about), on national and local levels, perhaps this could be a good thing.

Chrissie Evert, We Hardly Knew Ye! by Michele Willens

We all have our issues…. But at least mine are evident only to a small circle of family and friends. To be in the public eye must be a blessing and a curse, heavier on the curse at times like this for Chrissie Evert.

LIZ SMITH FLASH! Tooting Our Women's Horns?

I’m very proud. Good job, ladies!

In the movie of your life, what actress would play you? What would be the title of the film?

Definitely, Kathy Bates. I get told that I look like her all the time. I hope they’re referring to the glam version of her like at the Oscars, not the Misery version. :)

Why Good Girls Finish Last, by Jacquelyn Mitchard

Being nice is the "illness of choice" here in the South. I’ve spent my whole life trying to rid myself of this dis-ease.

Will you take – or are you already taking – advantage of the benefits of being a senior?

I hate it when the youngsters behind the counter at my local coffee shop offer me the senior discount. I’m in my early 50s and a new member of AARP! But I guess to them a "senior" is anyone over 40. Or maybe they’re just letting me know that it’s time to start coloring my hair.

What book that you know you should read – but haven't gotten around to yet – haunts you from your bedside table?

I’ve been reading "The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World" by Lewis Hyde for weeks. It’s so rich I read a chapter and have to think about it for days before I pick it up again. It is like savoring a box of very deep, dark chocolates.
