Lesley Stahl Asks Rachel Maddow: What Do You Do at 7 on Sundays?

I like Rachel Maddow. I loved listening to her knoweable and often insightful show on Air America. She’s a brainy and brazen woman on radio and now on TV. Great article.

'When I grow up ... ' When did you decide upon your career?

About three years ago at 40, I decided to change my career to something I wanted to do as opposed to something I had to do. I am still twinking out my passion for writing and loving it.

Have you broken any of your New Year's resolutions yet?

Do whatever feels right for you, Patrice. Life is too short to wait until the New Year to make resolutions when you can make changes or improvements any time. Good luck and Happy New Year.

Have you broken any of your New Year's resolutions yet?

Resolutions = no solutions. I make a committment to myself each day to live a great day which includes being good to my health and mind, my family and people in general and being grateful.

How will you say sayonara to 2008?

We’ll be ringing in the New Year with my sister’s family at her home. The days are long past with New Year’s Eve Parties that end in the wee hours. Spending time with close family and friends rules.

Defining Moments: What will you most remember about 2008?

Remember the saying: “It’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets a whole lot better” Boy that applied to my 2008. This time last year, I was on a beach in the Caribbean, grieving from the loss of my dad and spending time with the people closest to me. From there my life kind of spiraled out of control for a while, in that I quit my job, stayed home with my boys and went very deep into debt. The upside, I matured into a woman, no longer daddy’s girl, and spent an amazing two months with my sons at home. This past Christmas I accepted a contract for project coordinating that gets me travel and leads to a smaller contract in writing, my passion. The debt part is going away slower than anticipated but this time next year or sooner I will be debt-free. My resolve for 2009 is to be me, my authentic self, no illusions, just plain old me.

Who is the most famous person you've ever met? What were the circumstances?

As a summer intern at a local radio station, my boss sent me on a story to the local quarry, unbeknownst to me, I interviewed a very young Kiefer Sutherland. What did I know or should I say who did I know at a young age of eighteen. I remember just staring at his nose, it stuck out on his thin almost frail body. I asked some questions the lamest being if he like Canada. The crew laughed along with him as he rplied “Yes”. Doink!!! His father, Donald Sutherland, is one of the great Canadian actors. Boy that haunted forever but didn’t derail me from my passion of writing. His movie career took off a couples years later, so technically, he was not so famous at the time but it’s the best I have.

Christmas Greetings to All From Liz Smith

To all at wowow.com, God bless you and happy holidays.

Is the recession ruining your holidays? Don't be a grinch! What holiday traditions will you never change – recession or no?

At forty-three, it is the first time I am fully aware of the impact a recession has on people. Children and mortgages really put life into a new perspective. This year our holiday is lean materially but rich in love and sharing, tomorrow after opening presents my family will read gratitudes lists to one another and cherish what we have. :)

What's your favorite part of winter?

The joy is in watching and listening to my sons fill with anticipation and excitement as they map out their day. Snowbank, snowfort, skating, slidding, snowball wars or my favorite shovelling. Winter would be blah without the pitter patter of young ones racing around the house for their hats, gloves and snow gear. I love it.

Are you sending out Christmas cards this year?

I’m sending ecards this year, timely, eco-friendly and of little cost. Great for last minute people!!

Smoke & Mirrors: What was your biggest disillusionment?

My biggest disillusion was believing every thought I had and not questioning it, especially, when it came to my confidence. Now, with a smile and confidence I prefer disillusions to remain at the magic show. :)

Times are changing! Internet-only journalism will now be considered for the Pulitzer Prize. What does this mean for journalism?

Join in the new revolution or stay stagnant. The new way the world reads the news is on the internet and I am glad to see it’s being taken seriously. I read all my news online, at times, blogging about it. Plus it’s environmentally friendly. Have a great day.

Pearls of wisdom: What is the most valuable lesson you've learned from working with other women?

For many many years I primarily worked with men and it was fine or so I thought. Then a couple of years ago I worked with only women, whoa, it blew me away. The environment was testy at best, emotionally charged at worst and left a huge impact on me. Definitely, I came away with a deep sense of sentinment and passion that bonds me so much so that years later I continue to support the organization privately.

Check your doubts at the door and tell us: What do you know for sure?

There are no absolutes is what I know for sure. Strangely, this concept comforts me, knowing you can count on nothing much but your own being. Enjoy!!
