How do you keep your thighs in shape … if you do?

Hey, Mrs. Pepe!!  Those gummy bears sure know how to have a good time, don’t they?  As for the push-ups, women usually keep their knees on the floor so that, basically, they do a push-up from a kneeling position.  Men (and, of course, yours truly) do push-ups with only toes and hands touching the floor.  Gummy bears, of course, just lie in the sun and wait until they melt.  But then, as we all know, gummy bears are lushes (or should that be "luscious"?).

And, to our readers, don’t get the wrong idea about Phyllis’s "Sleeping Giant."  It’s not what (or, even, who) you think it is!

How do you keep your thighs in shape … if you do?

I do the exercises in bed because the softer surface is easier on my back.  It’s hard (pun intended) to do them on the floor.

How do you keep your thighs in shape … if you do?

Every morning before I get out of bed, I do 20 leg lifts without my feet touching the bed between lifts.  Then I do 50 leg scissors, without interruption.  Finally, I get out of bed and do 10 (man-style) push-ups.  I’ve added this regimen to my day for the past two years (starting when I noticed my belly bulging) and the effect, for so little effort, has been astonishing.  I also walk, but I’ve always walked.  These exercises are what has made a huge difference.  With each, I had to start with just a few, working up to 20, 50 and 10, but there is no doubt at all that these exercises have rejuvenated my body (at 61, I feel stronger and fitter than ever before!).

P.S. Cost of this regimen, in terms of gymn membership, trainer, equipment, and apparel…. ZERO!

Which season is your favorite?

This wonderful poem by John Keats starts with two of my favorite lines of poetry.

To Autumn…

I
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

II
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

III
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, -
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

Liz Smith: Gobbling Up 'Julie and Julia'

The book is called "My Life in France" and it’s written by Julia Child and Alex Prud’homme (her grand-nephew).  Julia related stories to Alex and he captured her voice and wrote the book.  Bon Appetit!

Liz Smith: Gobbling Up 'Julie and Julia'

The movie "Julie and Julia" is absolutely delicious.  I’ve read both books on which the movie is based (and I am rereading the one in which Julia Child reminisces about her life in France - yum!!).  I also used, when I was younger, all Julia’s cookbooks so I know her recipes well.

Everything in the movie about Julia is spectacular.  Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci are gorgeously lascivious together and, if one or both of them doesn’t win an Oscar, I’ll eat my hat (farci à la française, of course).

For an oldster like me, the bits about Julie are less interesting but, without Julie, there would have been no movie so we have to give her some credit.

For a wonderful evening out, with girlfriends or without, or even with a m….an, go see this movie!

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

I skipped the poll!  This site is becoming too commercial.  I hope you all have "Ad block" activated so that you can avoid the other ads.

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

And/or for men whose lives are as empty and futile as yours and mine ;)

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

Did you hear the one about the doctor who told the old guy that his wife had acute angina?  "Yes," he replied, "And she still has a pretty face too."

The Rules of Looking Alluring Over 40 From Glenda Bailey and More (Photos)

I might think, hope or even believe that I look alluring at 61 but I don’t think that there are many men out there who are likely to be allured by me ;)

What is your favorite restaurant in the entire world? If you could visit it today, what would you order?

My favorite restaurant WAS Payard on Lexington Avenue in NYC.  I used to go there for breakfast.  The first time I had a cappuccino and an almond croissant there, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.  Unfortunately, Payard has fallen victim to the recession and has been forced to close.  I’d rather start my day with the most delectable breakfast on earth than eat lunch or dinner at any fancy restaurant.

What is the meaning of 'authenticity' to you? At what age did you truly feel authentic?

I’m feeling a little oxy and a little moronic today.  Just giving you a hard time.  Cheers!

What is the meaning of 'authenticity' to you? At what age did you truly feel authentic?

A false representation can be an authentic lie.  Moreover, Bernard Madoff is an authentic bastard, scam artist and swindler.

And the statement that the sky is green is an authentic misrepresentation :)

What is the meaning of 'authenticity' to you? At what age did you truly feel authentic?

Life is a progressive process, certainly.  But my point is that we are authentic at every age because we can be nothing but our own selves - even if those selves are lying and cheating.  The idea that authenticity is always a positive attribute (as in the dictionary definition) requires careful analysis and modification.  For example, what a dog leaves on the sidewalk is certainly authentic!

Sam’s blushing!!!!  Aww, sassy Sam!?!?!

Isn’t friendship a wonderful thing!  And we spent our first fifteen minutes together walking your ten-month-old son (yes, folks, he was walking by then - and he’s now the father of two!) around the block - how well I remember it (you were in tight jeans tucked into high boots, as I recall).  I guess I must have thought you were the real deal too because it didn’t take me long to take to you too.
