What is the most romantic vacation spot in the world you have ever experienced? What were the circumstances? Spill it all

Although I didn’t experience this place with someone I love, I found the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Telegraph Hill at sunset to be pure magic (and full of romantic potential). I hope to return there someday and share it with someone I love!

What do you hear outside the windows of your home at night?

In the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama (an area as close to the country as it is the city) we are serenaded by a chorus of crickets and frogs, intermingled with the occasional staccato of barking dogs at this time. In a few days we’ll hear the add mixture of laughing children as the kids, freed from their scholastic labors, play outside long after dark.

Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties: A Quirky Celebration of Cats

That is great! I can’t figure out why I have the sudden urge to needle-point this story, though. Perhaps it is the will of my overlords!!!

Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties: A Quirky Celebration of Cats

I am ruled by four feline overlords: Lilo (a true DIVA who looks like the ginormous cat on the IBKD title slide…she wants the world to know that she finds the use of HER name as an acronym for Lindsay Lohan REPREHENSIBLE!!!!), Little Bit (my daughter’s rescue kitten who has become anything but LITTLE, and who’s catitude is second only to Lilo’s), Stitch (a beautiful, sweet, long-haired, black tom who is becoming a ‘distinguished older man’ as the tips of his chest hairs are turning silver…We never thought he could be any prettier, but he IS!), and Kiki (a solid white kitty with one blue eye and one green, she is shy but affectionate—the ‘head-butt’ being her favorite greeting). They bid me to extend my thanks to wOw for acknowledging feline uniqueness and superiority. My Jack Russell TERRORDaisy, wants me to remind everyone that, as the opposition, it is her DUTY to oppose the cats!

Where can we find you this Memorial Day Weekend?

Saturday, I spent a fortune on pool chemicals, furthered my work at turning my ‘winter swamp’ into a sparkling summer oasis, I again took up arms in my annual "spring war against the damn bamboo" ( I SWEAR I’m gonna win one of these days!), and generally worked my posterior off in the yard. Sunday I was off to Atlanta to see Joan Jett and Heart in concert; Ms. Jett and the Wilson sisters all looked and sounded GREAT (who says women over 40 don’t rock?). Even through the rain, the ampitheater was packed from begining to end! Today, I am taking a quick break from my "damnboo" battling and thought I’d check in here. Hope everyone is having a great holiday!

Liz Smith: Ann Richards Would Have Seceded Rick Perry's Head From His Shoulders!

HA!!! You’re probably right Sandbee (although I presumed that Texas hairspray is stronger than ordinary hairspray, as evidenced by all those hairdos on Dallas)…Perhaps he snaps his hair onto his head in the morning…You know…like a weeble!

10-Year-Old Hannah Powell-Auslam Battles Breast Cancer

For all that science has learned about cancer, there is still so much more to understand. When the human genome project was launched, it promised hope for a deeper understanding of the causes of cancer, the identification of those individuals who are genetically predisposed to certain cancers, etc. While the endeavor of identifying gene strands and DNA sequences which are linked to certain cancers was a worthy effort, it demonstrated that the manifestation of cancer in an individual is a much more complex issue. For example, in a set of identical twins—who have the same DNA sequences in their genes—why would one twin get cancer while the other remains cancer free? The answer lies in the burgeoning study of epigenetics—where nature meets nurture, environment, and human behavior. Epigenetics is a riddle which will engage scientists for years to come.

In the mean time, this young girl, her family, and all those who are fighting cancer need human kindness, empathy and prayers as they struggle against this disease. The American Cancer Society, the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and other charities which promote research for cures need funds. The ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ are immaterial to those who already have the diagnosis….They need help and HOPE.

Liz Smith: Ann Richards Would Have Seceded Rick Perry's Head From His Shoulders!

It has long been said that the dead can visit the living during dreams…It would be nice if the late, great Ann Richards could give the likes of Governor Perry nightly lectures while he sleeps!

Accused Wesleyan Killer to Plead Not Guilty

I am so sick of the ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ plea and defense. Yes, you have to be mentallly disturbed to harrass, stalk, and kill someone, but there is no way this guy does not know the difference between right and wrong. He carried out a premeditated ambush.

When it comes to home repairs, do you do it yourself or hire somebody?

It depends on what is needed. I paint, I repair fences, my deck, do some plumbing, cosmetic things, etc. When it comes to getting on the roof, or major electrical repairs, however, I call a pro!

MASH Star David Ogden Stiers Comes Out

I am glad he had the courage to come out. ‘Coming out’ would be a non-issue, if we all had acceptance and the same civil rights. This is no "gay agenda". We just want equal rights as tax-paying Americans. I’ve read comments saying we want to "..teach gay sex in the classrooms…"—this is so wrong. Most of us try to live quiet and respectable lives. I wish some of you would read the excellent book "A Place at the Table", which is an even and sound expression of what most Americans who happen to be homosexual want: nothing radical, or shocking…just equal rights under the constitution. I have written exhaustively on this site about how I can lose my job in my home state of Alabama, for no other reason than the fact that I am a lesbian. I keep a low profile, I am an excellent employee, and I feel—to the very depth of my being—that this is unfair. I am (as the rest of gay America) tired of being afraid, constantly disrespected, and of being treated as a second-class citizen. This is why people like Stiers need to come out. So the rest of us can see who we are…So you can’t pretend we do not exist. We are here, and we are your coworkers, your neighbors, and even your own friends and family. I wish everyone would ask themself this question: "Is it possible that I have a gay friend or family member who would be afraid for me to know this about them?". I can tell you I have old friends, coworkers, and even relatives I would never reveal my identity to because I know I would be rejected. Instead I put up with negative comments on a daily basis, I put up with some people’s attempts to "fix me up" with a "nice man", and I remain silent about my partner of 4 years and my home life. Some nosey heterosexuals are always curious though…and some of the posters here have the nerve to say we "flaunt" ourselves or "want to rub everyone’s nose in our ‘lifestyle’". I wish—just for one day you had to walk in my shoes!

Wesleyan Suspect Stephen Morgan Turns Self In After Johanna Justin-Jinich Shooting

My heart breaks seeing this poor girl’s photo. May she rest in peace…My thoughts and prayers will go out for her grieving family and friends.

Happy Birthday, Candice Bergen!

Hope you had a very happy happy birthday and Mother’s Day also, Ms. Bergen!

Liz Smith: Barbra Streisand – The Clamor Continues

I saw k.d. perform last October in Birmingham; she was fantastic! The acoustics at tha Alys B. Stephens Center are perfectly suited to Lang’s voice, and her rendition of fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah" was particularly beautiful. This concert happened to be on the night of the Alabama vs. Tennessee football game— and I definitely would NOT miss this game for just anything—but hearing k.d. was worth it!
