Today, the city of Dallas decided to keep Jenny at the zoo, expedite a 4 acre exhibit that is to be completed in 18 months, and bring in a female companion. This was after animal welfare attorney Don Feare had filed a federal petition to keep Jenny from being transferred to the drive-thru zoo in Mexico. Although we are thankful Jenny won’t be sent out of the country, we still are advocating for her transfer to Tennessee. More as developments occur….

The Elephant Sanctuary IS accredited thru The Association of Sanctuaries or TAOS. TAOS’ standards are much more rigorous than AZA standards.

Kryssi K, Jenny has a long history of trauma and post traumatic stress symptoms. Culled from her herd at 2 YO & brutally “trained” for the circus for the next 7 years, Jenny’s brain development was disrupted by the traumas of separation and abuse. This has resulted in episodes of agression, depression & self-mutilating behaviors, and being medicated with a tranquilizer (as recently as May after her companion died). There is a whole body of research about PTSD in elephants. Gay Bradshaw studies trauma in humans & eles. She wrote a 2005 essay called “Elephant Breakdown” which was published in the journal “Nature”. Jenny arrived at the Dallas Zoo when she was about 10 yrs old. Thank you for posting all the links.
