Candice Bergen: An Alternative Punishment for Roman Polanski

Lin, you have amply demonstrated the dark, avenging side of America.  Candice Bergen is an American citizen.  She was born here.  She has common sense in places you never dreamed off.  So instead of attacking her, why don’t you try to make sense of your ill-stated, unsupported, rambling "dark, avenging" opinion?

By the way, "liberal" is not a pejorative term, it is a term of pride and responsibility.

A jury acquitted O.J. Simpson.  The jury trial is a cornerstone of our democracy.  If you don’t like the way we do business here, why don’t you go back to whereever you are from?

One of the reasons many of us with good sense, reason, and intelligence don’t post on wOw as we once did is that  we have little if any patience with this sort of nonsense.

Lily Tomlin Gets a Lesson in Class

Actually, Ms. Lily (and Ms. Jane) could teach a class in class, if they believed in class, which of course they discourage…. IMHO.

Lily Tomlin Gets a Lesson in Class

Now Ms. Lily, you may not have had money, but everyone knows you ALWAYS had class….

On the anniversary of 9/11, what do you carry in your heart about this day?

I responded to what you said about a brave and patriotic American who is now passed; if you want to know why I responded to you in such a way, look in the mirror.

On the anniversary of 9/11, what do you carry in your heart about this day?

FYI, Rachel, the self-serving snide comment about Ms. Sontag is exactly why we are having such a difficult time in this country having a public discussion about anything.  Automatically, seeing your smart-ass remark, I lose interest in anything else you have to say.  Is that really what you want?  Susan Sontag is recognized as one of our great critics and thinkers, and we sorely miss her.  Have you read her work or thought about her comments deeply from a balanced perspective?  I think not or such an ill-advised, inflammatory comment would not come from your pen.  Ms. Sontag, BTW, was a dyed-in-the-wool to-the-bone New Yorker.  She loved her city deeply and dearly.

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Emcye, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you write like an angel…

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Of course you realize now that Edith now is actually the oldest living 5-1/2-year old!

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Well, Missy, I warned you, they wouldn’t just pretend it wasn’t so…  From Daddy falling out of his chair laughing at you tap-dancing barefoot, to Laugh-in "one-ringie dingie" when I was at the phone company (Long Distance Overseas, Operator 42, the Bell System) to that wonderful night in Palo Alto when you carved out your territory as including the entire world, to your waiting endlessly for me to carry that beetle up the long stairs at the Concord Pavilion, to your standing by your man Prior, to the great acting of the great words of Ms. Jane, to being a kind and generous person as well as a great artist, to the constant and continual humility that is so deeply touching in one so talented, for all the silly movies, and the way you are so many people and in the end most rooted and resolutely yourself, Miss, I thank you.  Thank you for the way, through the good times and the hard times how you have always been, and we can trust, always will be Lily Tomlin, national treasure, an alive and thriving candle in the wind, lighthouse, and laughing nymph who made us laugh in a relentless recognition of our ridiculous and common humanity.  Please, just totally enjoy this special day in celebration of all that you have been to so many of us.  Take it in, this love raining down on your head, fully and completely, and then, of course, fer chrissakes, don’t take any of it too seriously, and get back to work!  Baci baci, your pal Mugs

Whoopi Goldberg on the Woodstock Generation, Then and Now

See, now, that’s why I don’t think Whoopi is a comedian.  She just said the deal, and you’all are laughing.  There were "woodstocks" all across the country for several years, music and hanging out together in huge groups.  What Ms. Whoops said is true.  Except in my case, my parents were progressives, so I was just doing what seemed right at the time because that’s what they taught me to do.  I wasn’t a rebel, I was a conformist to my rebel parents!

From Lucille Ball to Ellen DeGeneres to Chelsea Handler, what comedienne cracks you up?

Wanda Sykes is hands down the funniest young comedienne working today.

Jane Wagner Gives Kudos to Her Favorite Comediennes

I didn’t include Ms. Whoopi, because I really feel she stopped doing comedy.  I used to go see her on the circuit, and she was funny as hell at the Boarding House in SF.  She opened for a wonderfully funny woman named Jane Dornacher who sadly passed way too soon, or we’d be listing her here as well.  I think Ms. Whoopi pursued acting, yes, but I also think of her more as a social critic than a comedienne.

If you can find "Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Goldberg," the documentary showing around about Gertrude Berg, GO!!!!

Jane Wagner Gives Kudos to Her Favorite Comediennes

Yes, and of course in the Carol Burnett school there is the immortal Imogene Coca.
