My Alias….I sure agree with you there. Gore/Kerry both listened to advisors rather than just be authentic and i thought really unattractive and costs votes. If Obama does it will cost him with supporters, too. I agree, be yourself. For instance, I have more respect for Obama for admitting he smoked and inhaled ‘that was the point’. And that bend her backwards and ravish her kiss of Al Gore/Tipper on stage at the DNC nearly made me upchuck. (and I like Al Gore)….but the phony/staged stuff backfires with me bigtime. That kiss made me wince. Get a room Al.

Carole—good post. I certainly believe that clothes are an icongraphy and everything outside is a reflection of the inside. Even if ‘styled’ they agreed to whatever selection. But what the viewer sees is also based on their own values and perceptions. You put it very well from your perspective but I’d come up with very different meanings. One thing for sure I think is no one from either party since 1963 has ever held a candle to Jackie Kennedy, including that she had a mythical sense of symbols, and not in the superficial way of flag lapel pins, etc, but in what is universally inherent.

Phyllis, I’ve read everything and am suspect about fictionalized history because The Heritage Foundation and other rightwing organizations hire writers (not that happened in this case) to do subtle smear jobs…and also bloggers to do the same online and tag it so if enter a google search instead of getting accurate historical info get a bunch of bunk. As GWB has said he isn’t interested in historians because they will hire a raft of writers for his library and that will be one of their tasks to take this total disaster and reframe him in some other light.

Lynn, I got to meet RFK,Jr and Caroline….but what was Bobby like? What was the story there. Without thinking I told RFK,Jr I named my son after his father, he quipped, “My mother did too!’ He was really sweet and admire his environmental work.

Beth, When I was in grade school we had the President’s Council on Youth Fitness…we loved the Kennedy’s so much that just so gung-ho in all those sports and getting the little awards. Imagine being in 1-3 grade and so inspired by the Prez and First Lady to read, paint, learn to ride and jump, care about languages, literature, beautiful things, history, music etc…..our parents already set an atmosphere but the Kennedy’s reinforced even more. I begged my Dad to take us on a 50-mile hike….he organized all the neighbood kids in touch football on the lawn, I was team captain in many playground sports because of the never say quit or die got from them. What’s the inspiration now? Let’s go bomb something.

Susan, The Ferry Building is a wonderful spot now esp for commuters who go back and forth each day and yes, good did come from bad tearing down that eyesore. So beautiful and open now, where there was concrete loads of palm trees, which to me are so elegant and witty. I love Hog Island Oyster Company and esp going out to their oyster farm in Tomales Bay, great place for picnics and barbequed oysters. I agree, sitting and doing nothing is very enriching esp in a beautiful spot like that…so much color and things to see. Jackie was very timeless that’s for sure. I bought “The Importance of Being Kennedy Last Night” and will get “Mona Lisa in the White House’ as soon as it comes out. Well…the fog is in and now cold so defintely am off to walk.

Phyllis….I know what you mean. I keep things very simple today for the same reason that Fashion Week designer said on the tape…it is a very supercillious focus when so much going on in the world. Still I like to look at it a bit…and know if need to pull it together can do. But definitely pretty far down the list of what’s imp these days.

…that’s ‘wear stockings with her summer dresses’….sheesh… She was so wonderful and Diana Vreeland had a lot to do with that as well as Cassini along with her own inherent good eye but always helps to have someone in the biz. I met a woman in SF few years ago… was eyeing what she had on (casual but chic), vice versa. She was wearing a black Hampton’s Film Festival baseball cap with gold cursive writing so I asked her where she was from etc. Had sold her 5,000 sq ft apt in Upper East Side and moved here and was an editor for a number of top mags and also at one time a buyer for Henri Bendel (love that) and used to help pull things together for Jackie. She said “obviously you’re from the east coast’…hated to disappoint her. But she gave me good marks for outfit and thought that was pretty neat coming from her. Nice lady, great voice…and she did give me a couple of fun tidbits about America’s greatest First Lady. Now look what’s on the docket…..it is so depressing…I don’t mean Michelle. Guess just will have to learn to cut it all out of view…but hard to divorce in my mind what they stand for and all the horrid things they’ve done. How does a woman go out and kill innocent animals for fun? Just that alone is so foul. After Dallas, JFK was headed for LBJ’s ranch and he dreaded it as would be expected to go hunting and the last thing he wanted to do was kill something. He’d been in WWII he’d seen enough of killing. As Deepak Chopra said they are the shadow side…everything I loathe. Will not stay in this country one day past 1/20 if they get in…8 years is enough can’t take anymore. At least in France there’s Carla! A simple black dress always looks right.
