I’m with Joan on this—Alice Munro’s and Eudora Welty’s short stories and I should add Caroline Gordon’s: just pick any one; John Updike’s The Music Room; and my all time favorite, Goodbye, My Brother by John Cheever, possibly the best short story I’ve ever read.
