Wannamaker's, Oldsmobile, Polaroid and PanAm … What defunct brands do you now miss?

Forego Iceberg - it isn’t good for our colons! It isn’t lettuce either, it’s a hybid, bred to pack and ship, and like wet tissue blocks the transfer of fluids across the colon membrane >>> a cause of cancer. But, like one great doctor I know, "Moderation in all things … including moderation." Pass the Thousand Island … no, Rouquefort, please (I have a wonder-FUL home recipe for the latter!).

Joan, your post was almost verbatim what I received in an email from one who had emigrated to Scotland with her family last spring. There are now 9 who have left the US - 5 have children under 15, and a common thread has been such peace, we can do things I used to only have fond memories of at home … plus, health care coverage without a "blink."

So sad! We have to live in our fantasies to exist.

MarySusan, I remember seeing the wrought iron window ‘decor’ increasing on homes in the N. Dallas areas as we walked, and thinking,

We are going to all be secure behind bars soon and they will all be out on the streets, free.

My 95 year old aunt is mouring the loss of the film - she has taken many photos and sent them to me from Phoenix - most recently, she remodeled her home, and wants to show me everything - when she found out there was no more film, I fretted it would be her last days. I’ve been online trying to find a Polaroid that still has film available to send to her!

Most people don’t know that night shots are easy to take w/o flash with a Polaroid - it has to be stationary, and the shutter kept open until it develops the image, but they are wonderfully accurate.

There is one down the road from me! It opened about 2003 - Stars and Stripes, double-features, and catered snack bar with the most incredible eats one can imagine. It’s packed every night it is open.

Common’ kids, jump in jammies, we’re going to the drive inn - grab your pillows!"

Chocolate Always on a White Blouse, by Sheila Nevins

Stains on clothing do not affect me as much as something in my teeth showing, about which I am unaware.

Absolutely agree with both of you. Obviously, some women today believe without breasts, rear thigh or gluteus tissue hanging out they have nothing more to offer the world. OTOH, I do realize some people may find nudity more comfortable, but so do I, however …

This reminds me of meeting a physician friend of mine in a shop yesterday - we talked, ‘shopped,’ and went to leave at the same time, having to queue up. The woman in front of me reached down to pick something up and straightening up she yelped, Owwwwwww, and grabbed her lower abdomen - there it was, a something attached to her protruding, bare navel and it had caught on a foreign object that she couldn’t identify, nor could we!

What a blooming mess! We were both in silent stitches - knowing she would recover, and offering some advice about infection (great Scott - we talked about that being an enormous possibility!), as she took off - running out of the store with her hand over "it."

LOL@you, Susan - Your grandmother reminded me of moi. I adore white, and since I wore it professionally for the earlier years of a career, I have no problems wearing it all the time, now; however, once I was wearing suits and buying expensive blouses (they make the least expensive suit dim) and/or having my suits made for me from my sketches, I started spraying the front of everything with Scotchgard! I had always done that to my X’s ties so it dawned on me that I could do the same for myself (DUH!).

Besides the spray, I will tote a vinegar/baking powder dampened towelette with me if I fear a wine or sauce stain on something. It works. The broaches, and other costume ‘masks’ are my passions, too. But, apres stains? I don’t think so, they’re dull, and seem to grow.

Liz Smith: Law & Order's Shady D.A. – Christine Lahti

Amused with your description, kermie, "complex actress," but I toss it up to the script. In this role, she is a loose cannon, unbecoming what is needed in law, and order today. It’s a remake on the cable show grande dames who are also rather loosey-goosie.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?

Janna, that has happened to more women that the world knows - don’t ever go through that again! Reach OUT, and MAKE someone help you! This is totally WRONG. You did not deserve that! Did you go to churches or social services agencies? Anyone you did who did NOT help should lose their tax-emempt status for endangering anothers life!

I used to take in any client we could not find a foster family for - for years - also her children! There is NO excuse for otherwise.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?

Laura, that link was NOT by me! It was forwarded to me by someone disgusted with their own pastor’s politics that "go on and on each Sunday" - in a tax-exempt church, no less!!!! I agree with you.

BTW: APS is strictly dependent on each individual case worker, they are inconsistent at best and that is a shame! It would be best to secure a lawyer for her through the local Legal Aid there, or U of H law school, and others - dial 211 in Texas for that referral. Someone needs to protect her records (medical), and her rights,  and safety now (legally). BTW: psychiatric maladies frequently skip generations so what may be in grandparents are not uncommon in grandchildren (for better, or worse!!!).

I remember you posting about her before and I added my 2 cents for whatever that was worth, but now, her age has nothing to do with her rights to assistance. Mental health is right now in Texas a key aspect in considering case and assistance b/c the state’s ignored it far too long and has been cited (from outside, heaven FORBID!). But, do NOT count on one’s children for later age, as too many seniors have found out, but they do (for some reason) help others - I hope!

In Texas, we have a death every 12 minutes  "the price of not having Medicare." — check this out:  http://www.healthcareforalltexas.org/

We should team up - several (many, in fact) are doing a great deal of work - for seniors, the disabled, and ill, and children. What miffs us, is that all religions appear to have tenets that mandate caring for "the least of those" yes, and widows, children, and mothers but … neighborhoods, and families appear to be exempt from this except for within the Muslim communities - they always step up to help anyone!

Look at http://www.communitynowfreedom.com/ and don’t miss "Forgotten Lives (it was on Oprah and the other top daytime shows). Once we got the Department of Justice in on this, things began to change, until Lubbock had that murdered inpatient a couple of months ago, and their DA has YET to make an arrest of the person who they know did it! But - that’s "WEST TEXAS."

THAT vote is today -I have to call Corny’s office - lot of good that does!
