Liz Smith: Casting About for Kate Winslet's 'Mildred Pierce'

What about Hayden Panettiere .. she looks like she could be Kate’s daughter and has that certain look.

Liz Smith: Casting About for Kate Winslet's 'Mildred Pierce'

Lindsay Lohan .. to "low rent" to get the snooty side of Veda, IMHO. Why do they have to remake the classic movies that were great to begin with? Ugh.

Dear Margo: Out of the Mouths of Babes: Their Parents' Opinions

Letter #2 - you say you read during travel as well as "for slow times as work." Woah, hold up. You cannot use a snappy retort when someone "interrupts" your reading at work! In fact, I’m surprised you haven’t been called onto the carpet for that. Work is work, unless you meant your lunch hour, put the book down.

Dear Margo: Sick of the Tall Remarks

It’s funny, but I always thought comments like "wow you look older" and "boy, you’re tall" would be received in a positive manner. The world loves tallness. I grew up short (still am - 5’ 1" at 50 years of age) and got the opposite comments. I may be off base, but I think people say these things simply to contribute to the conversation, not to be hurtful.

My Father Fought for a 'Bonus Plan' of $264.17, by the Author of On Moving

Obviously your father’s life was anything but worthless. He inspired you, and many others with his simple and honourable approach to work. He had a special gift of executing the designs of others, many of which are surely still used today. Thanks for sharing such a moving tribute.

Liz Is Away ... Have Any Gossip?

Victoria J .. I’m not sure why a post that was a lighthearted item about gossip, sparked a spewing of vitriolic anger from you. I assume you are a scientologist? I’m a Catholic, and what does that have to do with the price of eggs?

If you could have one piece of artwork by one artist to call your own, what would you choose? Why?

Oh so difficult to decide! To be practical, since my home would not support a huge painting like a Rubens, I would pick a Rembrant etching or a small Matisse. Something to treasure forever. But, I also love the Andy Warhol idea - the soup cans??

What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery – and won big?

I’d pay off a line of credit, buy a great new vehicle (I’m planning on doing that anyway, but I’d get a fancy one), then I’d give money to family and various causes I believe in, mostly concerning animal welfare.

Irish Eyes .. I think it’s important to differentiate between a commentator, like Imus or Limbraugh, and a comedian doing a stand up routine. Letterman said himself he was going for cheap laughs and, while in poor taste, he was not stating an opinion. Also, I think the difference between 14 and 18 IS important to the issue.

Liz Is Away ... Have Any Gossip?

Wouldn’t it be great if Liza’s show was made into a documentary? I’d line up for that. Love her!

Um, gossip .. I keep hearing that Katie Holmes is finally going to break away from you know who ..

What is your favorite short story of all time?

Alistair MacLeod, "In the Fall" from "The Lost Salt Gift of Blood" collection. This devastated me in a few short pages.

What is your favorite short story of all time?

I came in to make sure someone mentioned Alice Munro, the master of the short story! And, I see someone did. Any number of her are master pieces.

Liz Smith Loves a Larsson Girl Thriller

I just ordered a used copy of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo! Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been in the thick of two non-fiction tomes lately and could use a good thriller just for fun!
