Cool Mugsy I really love your take on this! Cheers, Susan

Lily Tomlin: When the 'Murphy Brown' Show Ended, I Cried My Eyes Out

Wowowow its so interesting that Lily and Madeline all started out their careers at the same time I did not know that! I so miss the brilliance and one of a kind genius of Madeline Kahn. What a character! Ditto for Gilda Radner too. Barbara Walters just published her Auto-bio. I was just wondering Lily if you have plans to pen your own life story? I’d be the first one lining up to buy a copy. Cheers, Susan

What gadget invented in the past ten years can't you live without?

In this order: 1. My homeopathic remedy bottles (that was when I discovered homeopathy) 2. The World Wide Web 3. Email. Cheers!

wOw's Views on the News: Cell Phones and Brain Cancer - Is There a Link?

Good Day, I agree with Frank. I hate phones and I love the idea of more silence and reflection in a world (i.e. taking time to stop and smell the roses as it were) where we are all at everyone’s beck and call 24/7. That in and of itself can’t be very healthy to always be “on” and constantly available. Obviously more research and studies need to be done before we can definitively say for certain about direct correlations between brain cancer and cell phones. But being connected and plugged in for hours on end is not exactly natural behaviour. We are bombarding ourselves with all sorts of waves from cell phone and digital towers that are ubiquitous these days. This email just came in relating to the Larry King piece that I wanted to share. Let’s follow-up on this important story again. Cheers, Susan (See piece below) A Message from Dr. George Carlo Science and Public Policy Institute Safe Wireless Initiative Dear Friends: I was informed earlier today that I have been replaced on the Larry King Live Show airing this evening by a representative from the American Cancer Society. This program change was represented to me as an attempt by CNN to provide “balance” to the panel discussing Johnnie Cochran’s brain tumor. The American Cancer Society has publicly supported the view of the mobile phone industry that there is no link between cell phones and brain cancer. I do not share that same view. The producers of the show invited a written statement that they said will be read on the air, and I have provided one. That statement is below. Please tune in, as the discussion should be very interesting. And, thank you for your continued support of this important cause…… Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Statement from Dr. George Carlo Chairman, Science and Public Policy Institute Two years ago, I was asked by the Cochran Law Firm to review the records associated with Johnnie Cochran’s brain tumor. Based on that review, it remains my professional opinion that his tumor was caused by his cell phone use. Key points leading to that conclusion: There are more than forty epidemiological studies of people, yielding more than three hundred instances of statistically significant increases in tumor risk associated with cell phone use; there are six such instances showing a definitive absence of risk. Systematic weaknesses in the published studies, although showing 200 to 500 percent increases in risk, indicate that these are underestimates of the true brain cancer risk from cell phones. Research has identified pathological mechanisms through which cell phone radiation can cause tumors, thus providing biological plausibility to support the statistical correlations. Clinical data on people suffering from other electromagnetic radiation-related conditions ranging from electro-hypersensitivity to Autism provide further evidence of the pathological mechanisms related to cell phone use. Lily where can I write you for an autograph? We love you so much in Canada! Cheers, Susan

Lily Tomlin: When the 'Murphy Brown' Show Ended, I Cried My Eyes Out

Aw!!! What a touching trip down memory lane, thank you so much for sharing this sweet trip back in time with us Lily. I adored you in Murphy Brown, you were so amazing as Murph’s boss and what a special treat to watch every week. I am still bummed that your sojourn on that fabulous show has all ended! You know some things in life you just never ever recover from. I miss my favourite Black comedies on the defunct the UPN channel like Half and Half and The Parkers. Another one, I that never fully recovered from is Living Single being axed that starred Queen Latifah. More recently I miss Hope and Faith or is it Faith and Hope (I always forget which)? Anyways, the one with Kelly Ripa. Very cute and funny show that I enjoyed that actually made me laugh out loud. Most comedy shows just don’t do that anymore. We need more really funny comedy shows (not so much the warmedy genre) out there in tvland and not as much reality show types.

The Aftermath of the Cyclone in Burma (Warning: graphic photos)

Hello, Adelle, thank you very much for sharing this urgent crisis with us and for bringing home the true scope of the horror of this unfolding and fluid story by making it real with your rich detailed reporting and shockingly sad photos. We all need to know this stuff so that hopefully some other bigger country out there can take care of this dictatorship once and for and let democracy flourish in a place that really needs it the most right now in this imperilled planet that we call Earth. The enormity and severity of this situation just boggles my mind. Peace from Canada.

wOw Scenes: Our Desks

Wow oh wow I have never seen an office as lovely as Jane Wagner’s. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I saw that bookcase and circular too! Wow surely no president of the United States could have had a better office really!!! How do manage to write on such a small desk though? My desk is usually cluttered up with books and CD’s and papers although as I write this it is suprisingly clean. I never seem to have enough book shelf space but something like Jane’s would do me just fine…well I can dream! Thank you very much ladies for sharing this fun part of your lives for us curious souls. Cheers from Canada

What is the most embarrassing piece of music you own?

Ah where to begin?! My entire complete Osmond record collection including the Marie ones with Donny. The Merv Griffin album where he sings his hit “You’ve Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts”. The Judy Kuhn Tribute to the late great Laura Nyro called Serious Playground. The entire Mike Douglas record collection. I am not embarassed by my beloved Lothar And The Hand People Debut album or my Strawberry Alarm Clock collection.

What routine medical procedure scares you the most?

Great question! The problem too is we that are NOT winning the war on cancer. You hear of more people getting it these days and less people being cured forever of it. Cancer is ubiquitous and its all time worst now not hundred years ago. It’s the fear of man-made ionization radiation on the breast tissue which is so sensitive to radiation in the mammogram that scares me most so the more of them you get the more risk you are at but Doctors don’t warn you of it. There is no safe limit/dose of artificial ionising radiation. I don’t like regular X-Rays at the dentist just for the sake of it or any X-Rays unless really necessary and that includes CT scans. Any artificial medical radiation doses up the cancer risk by how many X-Rays one has had during one’s lifetime. I too have fear of the test results more than the tests themselves. Modern medicine still has such a long way to go. As a woman’s health care advocate I’d like to see less invasive common medical procedures. The Pap test was invented by a man in the 1930’s surely with all of our “modern” technology science can come up with a better less invasive, uncomfortable and safer way to detect gynecological cancers. Even a mammogram can be made safer (i.e. less radiation exposure) with all the marathons and other a thons to raise cash for cancer cures every year why are these common prodecures for women not getting less invasive and easier instead of harder? There seem to be all sorts of advances for Prostate cancer but you never hear of anything major that would benifit millions of women in cancer prevention other than invasive uncomfortable tests that insure 100% of women do not comply to get them simply because they can’t go through with the tests for the above reasons. Let’s face it the tests do not exactly empower women. My hats off to those of you who have been saved by the modern technology but women still seem to suffer for it.

On '60 Minutes:' Is Gastric Bypass Surgery More Than Just a Way to Lose Weight?

Lesley, I always so look forward to your story with bells on as you always rock! My concern over the little blurb I just saw are: please give a balanced view of the issue: please also report on all the deaths and disfigurements and permanent problems that this surgerycauses. It is still considered a high risk procedure. Please report that many people die every year trying to lose that weight by this drastic means of weight loss. I just don’t believe its as safe as your piece makes it look. Do show also the negatives of such a drastic medical procedure, i.e. please don’t soft sell this surgery as something simple and easy. We live in a society addicted to being thin! Let’s hope those with eating disorders don’t see the show and see this as their magic permanent solution to thin-ness. Dying to be thing ain’t worth it through risky surgery. Please show us the down side to the big pharma, medical industrial complex that will get heavily promoted by this piece. Please show us safe, non invasive surgical ways to reverse diabetes and obesity. In many instances, the poor (poor because I think they were soft sold as to how easy it will be afterwards by the surgeons) surgery victims end up gaining all the weight back. Please report also other facts of this type of surgery: the vomiting of food afterwards and poor food absorption as the stomach re-adjusts, the vomiting that can go on for years. This type if risky surgery ain’t all its cracked up to be. After all in life every one knows there simply is no such thing as a quick fix/magic bullett for weight loss no matter how good we think it sounds. Buyer beware.

Jane Wagner's Butterfly Metaphor and Other Mother Earth Care-toons

Right on Jane! As an Eco-feminist Major its great to see these wonderful eco-messages so well expressed in Art. Please never stop making more for us to reflect to upon! Art is a fabulous tool for getting the environmental message out and a great tool for social protest. The sad truth is that we live in a very imperiled planet and it is affecting our health and very quality of life right now not in the projected future. If anyone would like to learn a little more about eco-feminism (that is the converging terrain where the oppression for nature mets the oppression of women) : I would suggest reading some of the following titles: The Death Of Nature By Carolyn Merchant, Vandana Shiva’s Ecofeminism and her Monoculture book, and any good Eco-Feminist anthology by Diamond & Orenstein or Judith Plant as editors, essays done by Carol Adams Eco-feminism or her Sexual Politics of Meat, Gorgons, Gossips and Crones by Jane Caputi is another must read. Thank you for sharing these wonderful thought provoking pieces Jane.

OUCH! Killer diets, strange-food fads, risky plastic surgery: Have you ever put your health at risk for the sake of beauty?

I just wish that women especially so those who work in the entertainment industry would not succumb to the peer and other pressures and give in to all the ubitquitous sucking tucking and cutting going on at a massive rate these daze. Even young actors on there 20’s these days are fooling around with Botox and getting all sorts of plastic procedures to enlarge breasts and the like. Just look at the reality shows based upon extreme makeovers ect. Growing old gracefully and naturally is no longer an option for these women. Instead they run around with their new swollen puffed up “fish lips”, and have their stretched so tight around there mouth and eyes in bad face lifts or they have these frozen expressionless faces as the new faddish in thing to do. Worse yet, they pay a king’s ransom to look like this and seem rather proud of the results. Do they think people don’t notice the before and after difference for the worse? Many a beautiful face has been permanently ruined by plastic surgery. There are plenty of botched jobs out there. Why take the risk if your ALREADY beautiful to start with? It seems poor self esteem and a lack of confidence plays a part as well as the pressure to remain forever young. There is no shame in growing old unaltered yet plastic surgery and botox parties are still keeping the (predominantly male) plastic surgeons very, very wealthy. This still seems like the in faddish thing to do. I find that such a tragic state of affairs that growing old naturally no longer seems a realistic option. I think those that got altered got sold a real bill of false goods. Not one of these procedures can successfully prevent or reverse aging permanently no matter what. Its bad enough having to get surgery if you really need it medically because of the pain involved and recovery involved but to do it just for sheer vanitys sake is revolting to me. I had my nose straightened for medical reasons only.

What mythical figure do you most relate to? Ditto, historical figure?

A) The Lady of Shallott and B) Hildegarde of Bingen, arguably the Western World’s first woman scientist and the first woman to be published as a writer/thinker/philosopher. She wrote several books and Opera. An amazing overlooked woman of the medieval European Middle Ages who had the power of the Pope’s ear at the time. So many to choose from! A great question its hard to pick just one or two though!!!.

I Read the News Today, Oh Boy: Bad Bullies in The New York Times

The school and it adminstrators and board ect must all be accountable for perpetuating and allowing a hate crime to continue unabated. Hate crimes are supposed to be illegal and that means it is against the law. Everone is supposed to be allowed to have human rights. That the school denied all ofthe violence and blamed the victim is utterly unacceptable and sickening. I hope that they get sued real good for this. The police should have been called in after the first incident. The law will end up bullying the bully but that is the only justice in cases like this. Those bullies will grow up and use violence as a means of communicating and getting whatever they want as they find it has worked out for them. They will become more and more violent and get into more trouble. Homophobia of the school board aside in this case the fact they the school system failed the poor child and were so grossly negligent in protecting its very own students (God help them if they should ever had organized street gangs ruling the classrooms from their guns, knives and fists) from each other shows the world that they are in fact part of the problem. The school system here are bigger bullies than the school punks were. The school should be heavily penalized to set an example that this form of bigotry and hate crimes will never be tolerated and accepted as being OK by any means by anyone at anytime, anywhere! I hope that the boy will get some protection and relief from the abuse he’s been regularly receiving from his place of supposedly excellent educational institution of learning. The school is just Pathetic! I also hope that the bully’s parents ALL get publicly humuliated and shamed and get there come-uppence in this situation as well. There are all lot of forces at work to blame here for this dismal situation. The poor kid fell through every social crack in the system. I hope he gets justice and finds real peace for himself. He deserves it so much.
