Many of us learned a lot about life from reading Dear Ann Landers and Dear Abby growing up. We may not have faced the problems and issues of the letter writers but they made us think beyond the confines of our own lives. I’d enjoy seeing this play.

I miss the old fashioned service that you used to get on airplanes when passengers used to matter. It was a time that the airlines wooed us instead of cramming us shoulder to shoulder in steerage. If we flew a particular route frequently the attendants remembered us.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?

That is a major issue. I have been through that with my father-in-law. Nobody understands it completely until they have walked in your shoes.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?

Cutting ties with a verbally abusive younger brother. That act cost me access to some of the rest of my family. Over the years this brother insinuated many things that weren’t true. The final straw came when he implied that my husband might have tried to seduce his wife but he would forget and forgive for a certain sum of money. During the time this happened we lived several hundred miles from them and never saw his wife or family except at holiday gatherings. My husband not have the physical strength to drive that far and he often missed these family events because he has a neuromuscular disease and was not up to the commotion of my large family.

Why don’t we call some of these men what they really are, small minded people intent on pleasuring themselves. They had no regard for their families or their position in office. Even if the wives knew or suspected the sexual discretions they were tossed in the position of do I stand by my man or be my own person? I can understand Jenny Sanford moving out and on with her life after her husband called his mistress a soul mate. I think it took courage for her to stand up and say enough is enough. We need to remember that some women have never been taught to put themselves or their needs first so they strive to do the right thing standing by their husbands their faces crumpled in misery. Staying can also be a fear thing with young children to support and illness that you wouldn’t want to face alone.

<i>Gourmet</i> Magazine to Close

The demise of Gourmet magazine is a shock for those of us who love to cook. I did see the signs coming for some time. Fewer shoppers are buying ingredients for home prepared meals. The recession is making people wary of spending money for anything more than basic necessities. A good many of the working women that I know rely more and more on take out meals when in a hurry. It is too bad they don’t realize that many home prepared meals can be made ahead of time. Gourmet magazine is deeply appreciated by those of us who enjoy preparing fresh meals from our own kitchens.

Should Roman Polanski go to prison?

I think that society has a double standard. If you are brilliant at what you do some people want to make allowances for deviate behavior. Take a look at some of the well known people that have never paid the penalties of average citizens for their transgressions. This goes across the spectrum from entertainment to politics and sports. If these people had to face the music for their actions we might have a better society.

In the animal kingdom as in human, generosity and caring might be individual characteristics of each creature. More of it can be generated when there is surplus of food or supplies. I remember reading about a lioness that adopted a young gazelle. When it was killed she adopted another fighting to keep it safe.

My mother loved her hometown but moved to Battle Creek a year after her graduation to work. She loved going back to visit old friends. One of the highlights of her life was attending her 50th high school class reunion.

This is an ideal time to write about your experiences in Ethiopia because there are many people interested in what happens in other parts of the world. Your perspective will be a fresh opinion. Set a specific time for your writing then schedule other activities around that. If you feel stuck try starting with a fictional version of what you want to say. Sometimes your characters can say things you may not feel comfortable voicing.

Were you at college in Kalamazoo or Ferris State University in Big Rapids? My mother was raised in Big Rapids, Michigan. My grandmother was one of the first woman teachers to graduate from a teaching school with a certificate for teaching. Interesting how times have changes when my grandmother married and had her first child she was forced to quit work. Working mothers were not allowed in her district even if they were better qualified. Ferris State University used to be a teachers school.

Coal contains trace amounts of radioactive elements not harmful when the coal is whole. However once the coal has been burned these elements become concentrated and highly toxic. The fly ash leaches into the surrounding soil and water. In small quantities this might not matter but in coal burning power plants or other coal burning industries this means mountains of waste that could be powerful future contaminants.

At one time I taught remedial reading to high school students who came from backgrounds that were quite diverse. They all had one thing in common they believed that anything touted by Madison Avenue it had merit. I had a lot of sixteen and seventeen year-old girls with their names tattooed down their arms or legs because they thought it was cool. They had no hesitation of adding the name of the current boyfriend or current hip designs. They were lovely young people without adult guidance to help them make reasonable choices. These children and many others did not have the luxury of being raised with self-esteem. They were street smart kids who made their own choices based on what they thought popular culture was all about.
