What was/is your biggest dream for yourself?

My dreams have matured as life happened around me. When I was young I simply yearned to be an adult because I thought they had all the answers. As a young adult I wanted to be successful and was. When my husband was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and later with other challenges I wanted him to see our boys graduate from school and reach adulthood. Now that they are all out of college and self-supporting I want us to see other milestones together. This time can’t be duplicated at a later date.

Sometimes you can do everything right as a parent but your children will still follow their own path. Drugs and alcohol are powerful attractions to youth. We need to remember that some people are born with a more addictive personality than others. No matter how much you love your children you can’t force them to make good choices.

I think that the homeless doll is in poor taste because few families are homeless by choice. There is nothing appealing about living in a car, shelter or tent at a campground. But that said but I also thought that the Barbie with the tattoo was out of line for young girls. Not because I am against tattoos I feel that an adult is capable of making a reasonable decision on body art. Young children and teens emulate what they see to be popular before they realize the far reaching consequences of their actions. With all the misery generated by a dismal economic climate American Girl’s brand should have been more sensitive about this harsh reality of some lives.

Are you for or against allowing consumers to buy health-care insurance across state lines? (Why or why not?)

I agree with Chris Broersma competition will give consumers a slight edge. We will be sifting through policies reading the fine print to try to determine exactly what we are paying for. Interestingly enough some companies have different rates for different states. Maybe it is what the market will bear in a particular area.

A woman of a certain age is all in the mind. If you keep up with current events, get out and do interesting things people will want to be around you. Age is mind over matter we are only at our best if we think that we are. If you spend your time sitting around and complaining people will drift away as they tire of the rant.

Most of us know or have known people in the 90’s that can still fascinate us with their wit and zest for life. Keeping that and reinventing ourselves so we don’t get stale keeps us from being stuck in a rut.

How do you fall asleep after a long, stressful day?

On the rare occasions that I have trouble sleeping I do a few exercises then I am ready to relax.

I am happier as I age because I know what I want out of life. I do not dwell in the past nor do I want to relive my youth. I hope that I speak for many of my generation who would rather be older and wiser than young and ignorant.

What living American woman has had the biggest impact on our lives?

Women today are making an impact in every section of society from sports to space. It seems unfair to select just one as having an impact. My vote would have to be Sally Ride, She demonstrated that women could break the glass ceiling in NASA.

What is your first memory – if any – of the presence of class difference in our society?

We were living in Germany in the 50’s when I looked out the window and saw a man carefully going through the garbage cans below. I asked my mother why he was combing through trash and she said it was because he was trying to survive. He wouldn’t do it if he had any other options.

These present statistics may be less genetic and more about lifestyle. It will be interesting to see if the numbers change in the next fifty years as women participate in more hazardous occupations. We may find their stress levels rise as stay at home husbands attain longevity.

I dropped seventeen pounds after my father-in-law went in the nursing home this year by walking. I walk a minimum of two miles and work out with light weights. Part of being able to lose was not having the stress of no rest so I had the energy to help myself. I am still losing by keeping a sensible diet and no junk food in the house.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

I like men who are supportive of women who speak out and respect their opinions without qualifying them.

Some children prefer not to follow in the footsteps of their famous parents so they can make their own mark in life. I think that Ted Jr. realizes the importance of being available for his children during their growing years when they need him most. He has plenty of time for politics should he decide to go down that road later.
