Is Three in the Bedroom One Too Many? Maybe Not!

What ever happened to discretion? Why must everyone air peculiarities on television and in print? I agree with Jeannot. There are times that I think the media puts regrettable ideas in the heads of people who haven’t learned the wisdom of following their own hearts.

Diminished Labor Unions Have a Friend in Obama, by Liz Peek

Before unions many people worked in squalid conditions for up to 14 hours a day for six to seven days a week with no guaranteed breaks for low pay. Some of those same conditions are still going on today in third world countries as well as for managers and supervisors not covered by union agreements. It is called white-collar exploitation. Some examples of this are department supervisors required to be on duty an hour before their shift starts and stay until the paperwork is turned in. This can add several hours to an already full day. Because they aren’t union they aren’t guaranteed lunch or bathroom breaks.

In some industrial plants workers are required to work a swing shift that starts from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for a seven day period. They get two days off to adjust to an evening shift lasting from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. for another seven days. There is a one day break before these same people work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for another seven days with a four day break before the cycle repeats. They do get paid overtime after eight hours because the law mandates it. The supervisors do not. They are required to be in early and can only leave when the shift is handed off to another supervisor. If one of the supervisors is out because of illness or vacation the remainder are obligated to pick up the slack often working 12 to 14 hour days.

Very few industries allow their supervision to join a union. You are either a white hat (supervision) or a blue hat (hourly) employee. The white hats are salaried employees not usually eligible for overtime. Only the top few percent ever see a bonus and most of those work at the company headquarters. Thankfully physical conditions have improved but that is mostly due to OSHA and the unions.

Not every company in the US is run this way. A quick look at The Hundred Best Companies to Work For will show some very progressive corporations. For every company named in that book there is one or two determined to exploit their workers hence a need for representation. Yes some lazy employees do take shameless advantage of union protection. There are also those who might wind up owing their souls to the proverbial company store without it.

The Day Grandma Left Heaven for Dead, by Sheila Nevins

The day I took my first swimming lesson and the instructor said, "Everyone in the pool," I hopped in the deep end not knowing there was a difference from the shallow end. I remember fighting to get out then being in a warm secure place with loving people around who knew me. I was safe, happy and didn’t want to return but was told that I must. I came to on the side of the pool with a crowd of people around me. That experience left no doubt in my mind that there was an afterlife.

Are you like your mother?

My mother was more than a role model she was a compassionate gifted person. She dedicated her life to helping others. She never preached she led by example. I can’t remember a time our door was not open to others in need.

Female Thai Political Activist Known as 'Da Torpedo' Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Criticizing Royals

I grew up watching what I said because we lived overseas or on military bases most of my childhood. We knew that some opinions were better not expressed because we were guests in a foreign country. On base what we said or did would reflect on our parents and that could affect a career. When we came stateside I was amazed that humans could and would spew any opinion without fact checking or just to be heard. Over the years I’ve seen individuals tarred and feathered for things they haven’t done. Nobody took into account the fact that they were found guilty in a kangaroo court of public opinion until proven innocent. By then lives and careers were often in ruins.

It is just a matter of time before the courts begin to regulate some of the unfounded venom touted as free speech on hate radio or in published blogs. There was a recent ruling where Google was required to give the name of a person posing ugly and malicious comments about a person she knew. The court that ordered this individual out said, "Blogs serve as a modern day forum for public opinion including invective and ranting and shouldn’t be regarded as fact." I’d never advocate restrictions on free speech but we can expect it to happen if people don’t use common sense and regulate themselves.

What's the most physically grueling/challenging thing you've ever done?

Moving away from our house was such a wrenching experience that I knew I’d never put that kind of time and labor into a dwelling again. The sad part is that the new owners never kept up the work we did. The house fell into neglect and the yard became overgrown. They had no appreciation for the age of the home or the labor we had out into it. Older homes require constant maintenance but they are worth the effort. No modern house we ever lived in gave us the satisfaction of this one.

What's the most physically grueling/challenging thing you've ever done?

My husband and I restored a beautiful old home over a period of three years. It was hard labor all the way. Just about the time it became a real showpiece we were transferred to another town.

Women More at Risk of Death for Certain Cardiovascular Diseases Than Men

When a man complains of chest pain he is treated for possible heart trouble. Men are more likely to survive a heart attack and get further treatment. Women are often sent home or have their complaints dismissed unless they push for treatment. I know of several women who died of cardiovascular disease because they didn’t fit the profile of a person with heart problems. If any woman is experiencing chest pain she should insist that she be checked to be on the safe side. This is not a time to be polite or submissive. If she feels she is being dismissed she should get a second opinion asap.

Does money buy happiness? How much does it cost?

Money is a tool and like all tools it can be used to ease a lot of worry from life. Not having to fret over affording basic necessities does add quality to any life. I taught adult remedial reading for several years working with people determined to improve their circumstances and happiness by learning enough to improve their financial outlook. They knew that taking these classes would boost their ability to earn a better living. They were happy to have that opportunity. I learned from teaching them that hope can bring happiness. It was a privilege for me to be able to work with people with such a positive outlook on life. That was happiness too.

Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

Voting is a way of expressing an opinion for the candidates. Even if you know that your choice isn’t in the majority you are expressing support. It irritates me to hear people complaining that their candidate didn’t win when they never backed those running by taking the time to vote.

Bleak Outlook for This Season's Outbreak of Swine Flu; Up to 90,000 Americans Could Die (Video)

This also calls for common sense prevention such as washing our hands frequently as well as avoiding salad bars and buffets. Moderate exercise such as walking boosts the immune system. Staying away from unnecessary crowds all reduce our changes of picking up this virus. Our supermarkets offer sanitary wipes for the grocery cart. A little prevention can go a long way.

Sarah Palin and the Celebrity of Politics

Are politics the new celebrity? It appears to be so with all the political scandals from coast to coast. More than one politician is getting fame not asked for in the revelation of personal scandals. In the process we are trading truth for window dressing. Genuine time with constituents has been swapped for photo ops. Money waving lobbyists can catch the eye and vote of many politicians padding their retirement accounts.  I’d settle for a lot less celebrity and more accountability.
