Dear Margo: Silence Is Golden, but Only for Some

First letter- I love and need quiet and would never be in a relationship with anyone who talked a lot and needed ‘background’ noise. Would drive me crazy. The world is noisy enough. Second letter-The question is would the workers who clean the house, take care of the children, do the yard work, clean the pool, etc. prefer to be addressed by their first name, or last. It’s tacky to refer to the housekeeper as ‘the maid.’

Life's Work, by Linda Hirshman

My life’s work is LIFE…and than entails quite a lot…all related to what is right for me.

Sarah Palin Attacks Press Over Bristol Baby Rumors

If she was a bigger star than Obama…then she would have drawn the enormous crowds and would have won. She didn’t. She is a rock star with dummies. She isn’t attractive. She is a walking hick, snake charmer circus. A pathetic joke. Hope that’s clear enough for you. She is a travestry in every way. Totally repugnant.

The Worst Place on Earth, by Cynthia McFadden

AP, This is great!! Good for you…but how do we do it? Where’s the website/contact…sorry, but don’t understand from your post. I would love to do this and don’t even smoke! Thanks and congrats!

Is Jill Biden Coming to Tory Burch's Fashion Week Show?

Starry, “Jill and Michelle are very refreshing to have in the spotlight.” Absolutely!!

Let's Hear It for Mutts

Love the story Linda. I love cats, too, there is a cat adoption place on my regular daily walk so I stop in and pet the cats…..really hard not to take them all. This is the rescue group I found for Goldens: http://www.golden-rescue.org/

Marjorie, “I loved my two Schnauzer girls, but they were territorial to the limit” My sister’s too. She has had girl minis her entire adulthood…so I think on her second or third set of girls. Very cute by territorial. They have a three story house and no children except the dogs. One is notorious for getting ‘even’ if my sister takes off with company and not the dogs. She will grab TP by the end and run it out through the house, ditto with trash, and if guest forgets to close their door…..bye-bye shoes….something gets destroyed. My sister just laughs so the dog does not ammend it’s ways. They live inthe Rocky mountains high in the woods and the dogs will chase bear and moutain lions awy in their neighborhood….they really are something. I already had that high energy and mischief level in Shelties…am looking forward to Golden…love…will probably get an older one…And i think it may be a Carmel beach ordinance that not allowed on the beach without …given the look of the place. This is a dog loving community. that’s for me. Good luck with Milo’s GF. lol

Is Jill Biden Coming to Tory Burch's Fashion Week Show?

Jill is a doll and love Tory Burch. I’ve bought classic loafers that have lasted a decade and longer and always look right. There was a beautiful huge closeup of Michelle on HuffPo this AM….she’s really got her makeup down pat. Not much, but what she puts on really works. It’s fun to have two such with-it, smart, youthful gals at the top!

Rain, Although, I had a purebreed Sheltie and a rescue Sheltie [thus lineage uncertain] and loved them both equally and thought they were both equally terrific in their own way. Next am getting a rescue Golden, probably one surrender by families unable to keep during this downturn…which is happening more and more with beloved pets when many can barely feed their families.

PS, my brother also asked that after his death people donate to rescue shelters. He also had a Schnauzer, my other brother has a giant Schnauzer, and my sister, minis. I’m getting a rescue Golden and have the contact.

Marjorie, My dad has always had pedigreed Schnauzers. The most ‘famous’ and beloved dog in our family of dog lovers was his standard Schnauzer, Jiggs. A wonder dog who lived 25 years from our childhood into our children’s childhoods. But dad loves his rescue Doberman “Chance” so much that he had a knee operation so he could walk further with Chance who he thinks is the smartest dog on the planet. Staph infection set in, he had to have a lot of intestines removed, and a large part of his foot, he had a colostomy as a result and 6 months recovery to today when he can walk again with a cane, in the meantime Chance had to settle for walks with the missus. But dad has gone cheerifully thru most of this and Chance has helped him survive when he was on the edge because he’s just crazy about that rescue dog who he thinks has brains and a heart of pure gold.

If someone gave you $40,000 to buy an automobile, would you buy one made in America?

Marta, My son bought a BMW new almost ten years ago, he lives in Europe so it is mostly in the garage as uses public transportation/walks/rides his bike. But when he drove it to Belgium on vacation in December it had a minor problem that a BMW mechanic turned into a major one by his error, by the time my son returned to Amsterdam his car, otherwise in perfect condition, was undrivable and had to be towed. After some tussle with BMW HQ…and giving them proof…BMW is paying the entire bill to fix the car and for towing. Am sure his next car will be another Beemer.

Dear Margo: When the Strategy Is Deny, Deny, Deny

Phyllis, Loved the film, loved the play, and everything surrounding. The Beales were something special, wonderfully nutty and unique.
