Attention Shoppers: It's a Half-Price Stock Sale! by Liz Peek

What idiot would buy stock in an evil company like Citigroup?

If someone gave you $40,000 to buy an automobile, would you buy one made in America?

Maizie, American CEOs, Wall St, Big Banks, and many corporations [excepting small business] haven’t been very loyal to Americans, and neither have American car companies, which have been mostly in cohoots with the oil companies. I am loyal to small business, credit unions, Farmer’s Markets, buying local, etc…things that help. But not with the companies that have hurt us here and abroad…..Citigroup, Walmart, AIG, Cargill, Monsanto, Dole, Chevron, Exxon, GE, Phillip Morris, Constellation Energy, CNPC, Imperial Sugar, Roche, etc. http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=15275

Joan, A friend has a Lexus SUV…really nice to drive in.

If someone gave you $40,000 to buy an automobile, would you buy one made in America?

JCM, Nice to see you, have seen you for awhile. I’ve bought perfect Jaguar XJ6L, MBZ E-300, turbo Volvo, leather interiors, moon-roof etc. Have cash in hand, know exactly what I want, and look at ads only in top residential areas from private parties where I can see all records, and can also judge from house and person that they take care of things. Have always gotten under Blue Book cars. Love bargains. Drive for a couple years and sell at around the same price. Now want a MBZ station wagon as there is a Golden Retriever or two in my future so need a third back area for the pup. Of course with that Sloane Ranger sceanario will probably have to break down and get a black velvet hairband, too. lol.

Dear Margo: When the Strategy Is Deny, Deny, Deny

Deny” needs to grow a spine. And the sister-in-law of “Beyond Eccentric” should know that ‘Little Edie’ and ‘Big Edie’ Bouvier-Beale already did this and it was captured in the documentary ‘Gray Gardens’ with their Hampton’s home decaying around them, racoons living in the walls and attic, and cat feces covering everything. They never really changed and the twin isn’t going to either. Pathologically slobby types rarely do.

If someone gave you $40,000 to buy an automobile, would you buy one made in America?

No, I’d buy a used MBZ station wagon in perfect condition for $10K from a private party not a dealer, and use the other $30K for an investment that would grow not depreciate.

An Open Letter to Amy Dickinson

Brava, Margo. All of us grew up on Ann Landers [and Herb Caen!]. The only appropriate person to assume her ‘brand’ would be you; and you have too much respect to do so. Ann Landers was completely unique, had an extra ‘uncommon common sense’ gene, and remains a much admired institution. Would be really shameful for anyone else to attempt to ride her coattails or profit from her name.

Jessica does look as if she’ knocked back a few extra packs of Ho-Hos.

Marjie, Neat site! Love the ‘Party Girl’ poster. lol. The good old days.

Has the Miracle on the Hudson changed your in-flight habits? Are you listening to the flight instructions for a change?

NP—The deadliest crash in history between the two jumbo jets on the runway in Tenerife in 1977 was attributed to that cabin culture where the crew was subordinate and could not override the bad decision of the pilot to take off, even though the co-pilot had [weakly] objected. The largest plane crash in the US was at O’Hare and that was because an engine detached after take-off as the plane was at full throttle and too low to overcome the destabilization/90 degree roll. I remember the PSA crash in San Diego because I flew PSA back and forth often. The LAX to SF was one of the busiest routes in the country. My brother and I were really young and signing final papers on a lake property we’d bought together that morning. The crew wasn’t paying close attention and flying VFR. The transcript shows a deadhead in the cabin and all of them joking about their life insurance just before they were hit. http://www.super70s.com/Super70s/Tech/Aviation/Disasters/78-09-25(PSA).asp

What's Wrong With Bernie Madoff? by Dr. Stanton Samenow

Patty, On HuffPo they had a piece about an investigator who repeatedly tried to alert and get the SEC involved—they won’t listen. Just like when Enron was gaming California out of $(B and then Gov Davis tried to get Bush to intervene, neither he nor his ‘regulators’ would. Everything was gamed by Bush Inc. And now this country is FUBAR.

The Duggars, Nadya Suleman … When parents have so many children at once, should they be allowed to profit from it?

The question is should the doctor(s) who implanted Suleman be investigated on ethics charges—yes they should—and they are. And should the State of California sue said doctor (s) for recovery for any entitlements she seeks—again yes. What the doctor(s) did was immoral and deranged by impregnating a single, unemployed mother of six children under the age of 7. One would hope that the voyeristic media would leave this circus alone. And religious-right pro-lifers can get out their wallets and stand in line to support this nutcase and her 14 unfortunate children, and possibly get her to a shrink. Because apparently she’s mistaken herself for a cat.

Has the Miracle on the Hudson changed your in-flight habits? Are you listening to the flight instructions for a change?

Even when I flew 150K miles a year and knew most of the equipment, I got pre-assigned a window seat in an exit row, re-read the instructions, listened, and turned to count the number of seats behind me to the closest exit behind, and in front. If there was a problem and it was dark or smokey wouldn’t be able to see to exit, so need to have counted seats. Am not afraid of flying, but am always safety conscious.
