Liz Smith on Health Care: 'I'm for Public Option'

This is so true!  Of course people who haven’t really used their medical insurance are happy with it!  Those are the sorts of customers insurance companies like because they pay money and don’t use any.  The instant someone becomes sick, especially with something with life-long implications, the insurance companies are no longer interested in paying for them.  They don’t earn money paying medical bills for sick people.

Are you for or against allowing consumers to buy health-care insurance across state lines? (Why or why not?)

Unfortunately, in this case the consituency is acting like a bunch of sheep and following erroneous information to the detriment of their fellow citizens.  There were no death panels.  Health care is not available to all.  The opposition to the health care reform was a farce propagated by the hysterically emotional and selfish.

Completely free markets do not work when we’re talking about issues of individual rights.  A completely free market leads to monopolies, as done in the past.  Or quasi-monopolies, as we see with the current insurance industry.   They know that if they all behave equally poorly, they will earn quite a bit of money as the people they screw over often don’t live long enough to really object, or they are too poor to do so.

Removing the state barrier will make the competion a little stronger for young healthy people with jobs that allow them to obtain health care.  It will in no way improve things for those who have prior conditions or do not have employment that allows them to access health care.  There is no financial benefit to it.  But, as a suposedly civilized first world country, we owe all our citizens basic health care.

I am also for this given that it appears impossible for us to have a true public option this year.  Unfortunately, it appears that people would rather punish the poor and the sick in order to feel like they’re saving a buck.  I wish that the recovery of our economy would reverse the 20 year trend of looking down at the poor, but I suspect that this won’t happen.

Dear Margo: Life Is Choices

Oh I completely disagree.  Joint custody is the only way to go, as long as there is no abuse going on.  Once a kid is past the breast feeding stage, there is nothing special that a mother gives that a father can not and vice versa.

People who "share" generally don’t have feelings of ownership towards their significant other.  Also, we understand that there are all sorts of different loves in a person’s life.  In any case, this has nothing to do with a person who breaks the promises he or she makes towards a significant other.

I suspect most women who date married men have commitment issues.  I’ve had a few friends who have travelled this path, and that was certainly true for them.

Bros before Hos is a myth.  Men are no better than women are.

Dear Margo: This Is Not 'The One'

Why is he a user?  Maybe she doesn’t think he’s marriage material either.  There is no rule that says you have to dump an SO the instant you decide you don’t want to marry him/her.  As long as you’re honest, there’s no problem.

Dear Margo: This Is Not 'The One'

Oh come on, you don’t need to be dressed provocatively.  When I was in college guys would hit on me while I rode the light rail from my morning training sessions despite the fact that I was sweaty, smelly, wearing sweat-pants, a baggy t-shirt, a sport-bra and had uncombed hair stuffed into a messy pony tail.  When you’re in the city and either by yourself or with one other girl, you’re going to get hit on regardless of what you’re wearing.

Have you ever gotten sick and then experienced health care in another country?

As I’ve posted above, the numbers do not agree with your story.  I’m sorry that you believe that the facts have a liberal bias.

Have you ever gotten sick and then experienced health care in another country?

Well, the first proposals put on the table were to include a public option for those who needed health insurance and couldn’t afford it and none of them would have affected people’s existing health options.  But the ignorant hysteria about how there would be death panels and how people didn’t want to pay for "those lazy bums" have removed this as an option.

But, as for the difference in health care between here, the Czech Republic, Enelgand and Spain, it’s important to look at hard numbers rather than comparing stories as a person’s preception and biases will color how they view everything.

Life Expectancy (rank,country,year)

23 Spain 80.05 2009 est.
36 United Kingdom 79.01 2009 est.
50 United States 78.11 2009 est.
61 Czech Republic 76.81 2009 est.

Infant Mortality (rank,country,deaths/1000 live births)

211 Czech Republic 3.79 2009 est.
208 Spain 4.21 2009 est.
192 New Zealand 4.92 2009 est.
180 United States 6.26 2009 est.

I’ve included both life expectancy and infant mortality because while there is a strong correlation between health care and life expectancy, the lifestyles of the people in question also have an effect.  (i.e. people who eat better and exercise can offset worse health care.)  However, infant mortality is almost 100% correlated with health care availability as babies generally haven’t had time to acquire bad eating habits….

Terrible.  Just like all the people who were misdiagnosed in the US.  However, the life expectancy (which is largely correlated with the quality of health care) is higher in Canada so more people in Canada get to meet their great-grandparents.

We will not become better educated as long as the religous right wages their war on knowledge.  It is also impossible for everyone to get a better paying job in that everything will cost more if everyone makes more.  We saw that with the housing industry.  Everyone was able to get a half million dollar loan, and so the cost of buying a house in many areas soared to meet that amount.

My cousin is living in Germany with his wife and newborn daughter, and he says that the medical care they’ve received is phenomonal compared to what was available to him here in the States.
