My Comments (197 so far…)

The Irony of Ruth Madoff, by Candice Bergen

"My mother was in the war and she went through her family being torn apart because of Hitler.  Hitler went afte the jews Madoff went after the money, and not all the people were rich people. My mother’s father was in a camp and he made it out but died way to young."

All the more reason why you shouldn’t compare Madoff to Hitler.  Losing most — or even all — of your money is not comparable to being murdered in a death camp.  People lose money every day and they manage somehow.  Some of them go on welfare.  I’m sure none of Madoff’s victims is going to be a homeless person on the street, but a lot of them are going to have to adjust their lifestyles, in the same way people are adjusting to losing their jobs, for example..

All criminals are willing to destroy.  But all crimes are not equally heinous.  Money would have to be extremely, off-the-charts important to somebody who would compare Madoff to Hitler.

The Irony of Ruth Madoff, by Candice Bergen

"Does she even think about the people who have last everything because of her husband? Of course not. Does she even think of what this has done to the family name? Of course not."

How do you know what she thinks?

 "I personally believe…"

What’s the difference between "believing" and "personally believing?"

"The Madoff name will be hated as much as the Hitler name because Madoff killed dreams (retirement, financial security, I could go on) and Hitler killed. Its all the same."

It’s not the same at all. Hitler operated death factories and killed millions.   Madoff stole money from rich people.  How can you compare stealing money to genocide?   How dare you even make a comparison like that!

Bruno Bettelheim: Satan in Drag, by Cornelia Read

"I will read every book on autism I can get my hands on. But not The Empty Fortress. Not yet."

No, don’t read it.  Instead, please spend the time writing more novels.  I loved your first two.  I hope more are in the works.

Should tobacco advertisements in magazines be banned?

Why advertise Tylenol when it can give destroy your liver?   Why advertise any beverages containing alcohol when they can cause alcohol poisoning?

Veterans groups still try to disrupt every event Fonda attends.  I was covering a high school graduation at which she was the speaker, and a contingent of them who had come all the way from Connecticut stood outside the gates chanting, and trying to wreck the graduation.

Fortunately, they were downhill and downwind and could hardly be heard.  Their behavior — and their willingness to spoil this important event in the lives of these young girls who were graduating — was disgusting.  Police had been called and so this mob of nasties were unable to come onto the campus and had to confine their rowdiness to a small area on a public street.

As for fashionable, Jane was one of the first film stars to wear Versace.  When she was working in movies, she was one of the most smartly dressed actresses.   Now that she is in her seventies, she is interested in other things.

What are you talking about?

I was and still am a supporter of Ms. Fonda, who was actually working for peace at the time of the so-called "Hanoi Jane" incident.

If you think I said something else, then you are misreading my posts.

"Re ipsa loquitur" is incorrect.

The correct phrase is "res ipsa loquitur."

The people whose view is distorted are those who insist — despite the fact that those allegations have been disproved — that Fonda’s actions did cause some actual damage.

As Amanda Nelson wisely pointed out upthread,  Jane Fonda was anti-war, but not anti-soldier.

"Sorry, to me she will always be "hanoi Jane". How many of our young men were tortured or died because of her?"

None.

The stories about "our young men" being tortured because of her are nothing but urban legends.  Baloney.   Hogwash.

Fonda is enormously talented, and also very smart, insightful and conscientious.  It’s clear that you know very little about her.

Been there.  Much nicer destination than Cambodia, I might add.

Nobody is pretending that she didn’t pose for those pictures.

By the way, Wellesley is a college, not a university.   And the debunking on Snopes has appeared in countless other places.   Of course, if you are determined to cling to your hate on Jane — along with all of the other folks in your Garden of Dislike —  then cling away.    Somehow, I’m not surprised that you are an advocate of grudge-bearing, rather than forgiving and forgetting.

Today, Hanoi is a lovely place for tourists to visit.

What specific actions do you think she needs to apologize for, that she hasn’t apologized for already?   Aside from the phony note-passing story, there were other things Jane supposedly did — which she did not in fact do.  Certainly, she had the right to demonstrate against the war if she was opposed to it, didn’t she?

What you seem to be saying here is that you are an inflexible person who refuses to be swayed from your misconceptions and prejudices, even when documented proof is presented to you.

And let’s be clear on this:  you don’t speak for all mothers whose sons fought in Vietnam, or the families of all Vietnam veterans, so kindly don’t pretend that you do.

The story you speak of was long ago debunked as an Urban Legend.

I try to avoid believing crap, and you should too. See: http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp
