Lily's Warmest Thank You

OK, I am nosey - what where you doing in Boston Miss Lilly?  It would be oh so nice to see you on TV or film, but I guess that Boston isn’t where people normally go if they are working on a TV show or a movie…

Happy Birthday, Lily!

I almost drove off the side of the road when I heard the reporter on NPR say that Miss Lilly is 70 (!!!) today.  My, my 70 isn’t what is used to be.  While many around the world will be marking the beginning of WWII, those of us here will be honoring the beginning of a wonderful life.

Miss Lilly I can not remember a time before I loved you.  I remember watching Laugh-In as a girl & thinking how smart you must be to be able to play the little girl as well as the old lady (whom to my great pleasure my mom dressed up as one year for Halloween).  Now that I am grown, I think that you are even smarter because of how you live your life.  Thank you & happy birthday to someone who has always been my hero.

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Lol - you are right Mugs

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Amen to everything Donna just wrote.

Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

I have always voted in Presidential elections including the primaries.  Interestingly enough, the first time I voted was in the 1980 Primary - I was only 17 but would turn 18 before the November election.  I was given MUCH grief at the poll, but knew that I had a right to vote.  At first the poll workers wanted to let me vote on the local issues but not for potus - I wasn’t going to walk away without voting so I voted on issues, then they realized that I DID know what the heck I was talking about & voted for Pres. Carter.  Of course as a teen I thought that they were idiots, but tried not to let it show knowing that would not help my cause.  And I have to admit it, I was quite pleased when someone called my mom that night telling her how impressed she was with how I handled the situation.  I wonder if the person who called intervened at the poll - it makes me remember that if you see someone who needs help, help them (even cocky teenagers).

The funny thing is that in 2012 my son will be turning 18 in late summer, so he too will be able to vote in the primaries while 17.  That is if he decides he is willing to identify with a party.  Right now, he is very interested in voting, but thinks both of the national parties are full of crap.  He likes some politicians & is aware of the issues, but is very much turned off by the 2 parties.

By the way in that primary in 1980 I voted for Jimmy Carter over Teddy Kennedy.  I was very annoyed with Kennedy for running against the president.  Now, as the country mourns a great senator, I think god bless Teddy Kennedy.  He was a great senator and a great American.   Maybe his passing can become the incipience  to Congress passing REAL health care reform.

Etsy.com – Making Things and Making a Living

Etsy is amazing.  I have been selling vintage beads on eBay for years & just started on Etsy this spring - boy what a difference!  Etsy is easier for newbie sellers, more user friendly for buyers & so far everyone is just so darn nice.   Maybe it is because so many of us Estians are coming from the same background - creative people that want to march to our own drummers - or maybe because Esty doesn’t have so many rules & fees & what-nots driving everyone nuts.

I have told my friends that if you are looking to buy a gift - check Etsy first.  If you want some creative ideas - check Etsy.  If you have something that you make & want to try selling it - check Etsy.  If you know someone who makes jewelry and might like vintage beads - tell them about my shop!  By the way, the Etsy Supply Team (Team ESST) will be having a weekend extravaganza on Sept 5 & 6th - most of our team members will be having specials (each team member sets their own).

Dear Margo: Married, Pregnant and Miserable

Kate - I was thinking the exactly same thing.  The writer should tell her gyn-ob everything NOW, then quietly & calmly plan to leave after baby #2.

Lol - good one Candice!  Even Vermont gets pretty sticky hot in August.

Great question, Fran.  I want to know this too.

From Lucille Ball to Ellen DeGeneres to Chelsea Handler, what comedienne cracks you up?

It’s funny I enjoy my kids as much if not more as they get older, but I get sad about them eventually leaving me.  Well, that and them leaving the fun stages that they are in (which so far has been pretty much each stage).  I am close to my mom & in-laws so I am hoping that they will stay close to me.

I agree about the lack of birthday option - it sucks worst than having a birthday.  All I keep wondering is how the heck did I get this old - then I remind myself I can’t be old - I have a 9 year old (of course, we won’t talk about how old I was when I had her).  The moms say that if we feel old imagine how they feel having children our age.  I love it!

Nora Ephron wrote a funny piece for Huff Post last week about Ryan O’Neil not being the only one that doesn’t recognize people (like his daughter at FF’s funeral).  Speaking of Nora, I think she is amazingly funny.  I have written how much I enjoyed Julie & Julia - I hope Hollywood will make more movies that us chicks like.  But for that to happen we have to go to the ones that are made (so, if you haven’t gone go to J&J).

Betty White was on Craig Ferguson’s Late Night Show last night (8/11).  She was a hoot (as she always is).  I will try to attach the link, but if it doesn’t work, I saw it via Huffington Post’s Comedy section.

Jane Curtin has the same birthday as me (not the same year).  Don’t let her straight guy routine fool you, she is drop dead funny.  And smart.  I think I heard an interview with her on NPR & it was very interesting.  Don’t forget that when Jane started out comedy was a ‘boys club’.  And look at how many of the people that she was on SNL with are dead.  As I tell my teenager, being smart isn’t enough, you’ve got to make smart life choices too.

Thanks Lin - Our dog died this past weekend & my son starts high school on Monday.  I am in such a funk about my boys leaving me that I think that watching some funny TV may be just what the doctor ordered.   I am glad that my kid’s schools start on different weeks this year, so that EVERYone doesn’t leave me at once.  I don’t know about other moms, but I tend to get bummed out once my kids go back to school and it doesn’t help that my birthday is at the beginning of Sept.  They are growing up & I’m getting old.  Boohoo!

Thanks for the info, Lin.  Is "Head Case" a sitcom?  Is it any good?  I find that most of my TV time has now become computer time, so I know amazingly little about what’s on TV now.  I do try to what "Drop Dead Diva".

I gotta stop multitasking while I write!  I meant Alexandra, I’ve heard her a couple of times on talk shows & she cracked me up.  I’ve never really been into George S., but after hearing his wife talk I’ve decided that he IS a smart cookie.

Jane Wagner Gives Kudos to Her Favorite Comediennes

You know what I love the most about Lilly, Whoopi & Jane?  Not only do they make me laugh, they also make me think.  I like smart women & these are some of the smartest around.

My son is turning 15 this week & I have told him "I will love whoever you choose - but for God’s sake pick a girl with a brain & a sense of humor."  I’m not too worried, since all of his friends are a HOOT
