Mr. wOw: Falling in Love Again With 'Marlene'

Oh, I am not the forgetting all the wonderful and charitable work Elizabeth Taylor has done. I am only commenting on the respective attitudes towards the aging process. You are absolutely right about the astounding work Elizabeth Taylor has done and her involvment with her perfume, jewelry and other business interests shows she is no slouch in that area either.

Liz Smith: Big Doin's for the Ruins in Manhattan's Institute for Study of the Ancient World

I saw Nicole Kidman on the Oprah show and was fascinated how only the mouth moved and not any other part of her face. If there was ever a Botox queen she is it. I know, Meow—-

Mr. wOw: Falling in Love Again With 'Marlene'

I am of two minds —- I respect Elizabeth Taylor’s "this is it" attitude. But also find Marlene Dietrich’s idea that the public should be left with their memories of her at her most intriguing a powerful decision.

LIZ SMITH FLASH! A Question From National Review

Here, Here to you also. I could not have said it better myself.

In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

I was once an avid watcher of Mr. Olberman but have since gotten tired of the bombast and agree he has become of parody of himself. I do appreciate Ms. Maddow’s approach to interviews and debate. We need more like her on TV

You mean I missed the convention!

Happy Birthday, Lily!

I wish you a very Happy Birthday and, trite as it is, many many more. And that’s the truth!!!

Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

Whether granted or recognized I have not missed voting in a major election in over 40 years. It is a privilege to vote in this country and very big responsibilty. And I feel a member of the citizenry that helps establish change in whatever election I vote in —-

Do you think ground combat positions in the armed forces should be open to women?

If women want to go into the ground forces and they have gone through the training and passed then let them go. It’s surely not what I would want to do given the choice but it’s about time that women, gays, and whoever wants to join up should be allowed to do so. The influx of women and gays might keep down the need to sign up criminals.

Which season is your favorite?

Fall, without a doubt, is the most beautiful time of year in Colorado. The aspens are turning gold and bronze and red and the air is crisp and clean. And the heat of summer has passed and we’re looking forward to the snow.

From Lucille Ball to Ellen DeGeneres to Chelsea Handler, what comedienne cracks you up?

Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg are 2 of the funniest ladies ever. But Imogene Coca was a laugh out loud riot. And let’s not forget Audrey Meadows on the Honeymooners.

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. Did you go? If you didn't what did you feel about it?

I was 22 and married to a Palms Springs policeman in 1969. I was not into the hippie drugs, sex, and rock and roll at that time. However, after my divorce the following year is a whole different story.

Liz Smith: Classic Dish on Classic Stars

I don’t care if Marlene Dietrich wanted to sit on a gold throne and eat with gold utensils at dinner parties while everyone else ate with plastic. She was a great actress and a strong personality in an era (sorry to be trite) when stars were stars. They didn’t go out on the street looking like bag ladies. They were stars - we don’t have those anymore. We have celebrities. And I have read - and I’m sure Mr. Riva can confirm or deny this - that Ms. Dietrich was very intelligent and a great conversationalist.
