Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

I just dread the thought of something happening to McCain and Palin becoming President.

Palin-tology: Sarah Palin’s Fashion Progress From Pink to Power Suits

I’m sure she’ll be properly outfitted in “Dress for Sucess” clothing before long. But that’s really irrelevant. What’s important are her views and positions, which I find totally appalling. I hope that voters will see beyond her new Armani outfits and vote against the person within them.

What's the best way to please a man?

I’m still trying to figure out how to please my husband of eleven years.

Do you want to live to be 100? Why or why not?

Why 100? I want to live forever! I just can’t conceive of not being. My mother died seven years ago this past Sunday. She was 91, but had Alzheimer’s for about five or six years. She didn’t know who I was, and it was heartbreaking to see her that way. I don’t want to burden my children, so if I’m not in good health, I guess I wouldn’t want to live that long. But I’m hoping for the best.

Liz Smith: Democrats Beware of the Palin Backlash

She’s been in seclusion with Republican advisors, who are giving her a crash course in economic, domestic and foreign policy. It will probably take a couple of years to teach her everything she doesn’t know.

What was your favorite movie of the summer?

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.” I loved Harrison Ford thirty years ago, and I love him now. We only improve with age.

Happy Birthday John McCain! What birthday wishes do you have for the presidential hopeful?

I wish you many more years of health and happiness, in the Senate.

Who is the most famous person you've ever met? What were the circumstances?

Another one — I had a part-time job in a local (Westport, Connecticut) clothing store. Paul Newman had bought some slacks and was waiting for the tailor to fit him for alterations. He was a little annoyed at having to wait, and I tried to start up a conversation with him to pass the time. He really wasn’t very friendly —in fact he was downright rude. FYI — he was at least 5’10” tall, and he had absolutely no behind. This was before his illness, of course. Another time, I sat next to Joanne Woodward in church (Unitarian). She had no makeup on and had her hair pulled back with a rubber band. She kept smiling at me during the service, and I smiled back. After the service, my friend said “How did you like sitting next to Joanne?” I had no idea who she was — I just didn’t recognize her!

Who is the most famous person you've ever met? What were the circumstances?

A number of years ago, I was dating a gentleman who was of a different political persuasion. He took me to a party that featured William F. Buckley as guest speaker. I was probably the only Democrat in the room. In fact, I’m sure I was. My friend introduced me to Mr. Buckley, commenting that I was a “raging Liberal.” I said to him — “I don’t agree with a word you say, Mr. Buckley, but I love the way you say them.” He didn’t think it was funny.

Sunday is the 11th anniversary of Princess Diana's death. Do you remember where you were when you heard the news that she died?

I was at the local garden center, shopping for something; I don’t remember what. The radio was on, playing music over a sound system. They broke for the news, and the story was on it. I was totally shocked, but don’t remember much else, except that I went home and told my husband. We were in London in August 1998, and walked past Kensington Palace, Diana’s home. There were many flowers and tributes stuck in the iron gate. The people didn’t forget her. I don’t think they have eleven years later. She was so lovely.

Michelle Obama a Hit at Democratic Convention

Dr. Klein — I think it’s quite evident that Michelle is totally supportive of her husband and his ambition. She’s campaigned with him quite often, so I don’t think Barack can be accused of leaving her to take care of the children. In fact, in many instances, they brought them along. Also as a “high level career” woman, she is obviously independent and can function on her own. She doesn’t need a husband by her side all the time. That being said, I see so much love between the two of them. They appear to be a very close-knit family, and that includes their sibs. I find her to be lovely, charming, poised, intelligent — a perfect choice for a First Lady.

Caroline Kennedy Does a Star Turn at the DNC

Caroline could do so much good in the world, whether in politics, or some other form of public service. She’s a lovely, intelligent, level-headed young woman and would be wonderful at carrying on the family legacy. While she was speaking, I kept picturing that adorable little two-year-old, running around her father’s office in her mother’s shoes.

Will you watch the DNC and RNC coverage?

I’m a political junkie. I intend to watch as much of both conventions as possible, as I’ve been doing for as long as I can remember. And, of course, I’ll yell back at the TV set. That’s part of the deal.

Barack Obama Selects Senator Joseph Biden As Running Mate

This is really interesting — this article has 373 reader comments (as of 7 am EDT Sunday), while the article on Botox has only 21 comments. I guess it shows that the readership of this site is more interested in serious than frivolous matters. Good for us!

Barack Obama Selects Senator Joseph Biden As Running Mate

Well, Sibelle, since the good doctor has been dead for 700 years, I will leave that to you.
