My Comments (190 so far…)

Has your mother's style influenced your own? In what way?

My mother once remarked when I was in my 20’ that I dressed like I was from "a foreign country." I think she meant like a Bohemian. : ) She dressed very plain because she had eight children to take care of but she wore Evening in Paris cologne and she had a small jewelry box with the few *jewels* she owned. I remember as a child being shocked thinking she did not love my father because her engagement ring was pinned in there! haha (for safety) She did dress us all for Easter with hats and suits and for Christmas let my sister make us velvet dresses & to this day when I get *dressed up* I love a classic look and I love the exotica of perfume & those perfume spritzers although hmmm I don’t have one!

It's a Strange Love, by Mary Wells (Photos)

Dear Mary: Did you happen to read a story in the NY Times by Lucinda Franks, (NY DA Robet Morgenthau’s s wife)? It was called: "Journeys; All in This Together: A Family, A Small Boat, A Long Trip to Canada." It’s on-line. I loved that story, & I loved yours, too. : ) The open sea, or the open road, what could be better?

Liz Smith: Big Doin's for the Ruins in Manhattan's Institute for Study of the Ancient World

Mr. Wow is right about some things begging to be gossiped over. At times I have sat next to somebody and have been preoccupied with hoping that their body was Botoxed because one small shift to the right or the left, unless they were glued in, was going to be a major wardrobe malfunction!  ; D

The Palin Book, as Dear Margo Sees It

I can’t stand to watch such insincerity as was much of that interview on Oprah yesterday with Sarah Palin. No, she won’t overtake Oprah on the talk show circuit although hey, maybe she will. We, as Americans are being entertained all right, but at such a cost it is mind-boggling. If I wasn’t alive to see this I wouldn’t even believe it. Yeah. She could have been President, one heartbeat away from getting annoyed with heads-of-state who badger her or make her appear foolish by asking her what magazines and newspapers she reads. God help us.

Liz Smith: Big Doin's for the Ruins in Manhattan's Institute for Study of the Ancient World

Who is the *stir* on the red carpet coming from? The snarky photographers and reporters? There is so much emphasis on every nook and cranny of someone’s being it is no wonder actresses feel put upon to make themselves ageless. Many a beautiful face has been destroyed because all the character has been taken out. And I’d say who I think that has happened to but I would not want to add insult to injury. If Hollywood doesn’t want you anymore than it is "Hollywood" that should change. What they should be capable of doing is portraying people’s lives not just one chapter perpetually stuck in second gear. We become what we allow.

What was your favorite book (or books) as a child?

It’s a ribbon. (at least I think it is ; )

What Book Drove Joan Ganz Cooney to Tears?

I still cried, even as an adult, when Beth March dies in Little Women.

Liz Smith Gets High ...

I did the same thing but with roller skates. I could not wait to use them so I slipped out the back door. My mother was not at all happy having to supervise kids dropping clothespins in a bottle at the house without my even being there. ; )

What was your favorite book (or books) as a child?

I did not have a favorite, really. I kept getting new ones: I was fickle! The Cat in the Hat, Nancy Drew, Jane Eyre, Gone With the Wind, Wuthering Heights, Little Women, etc.. Those I had to return to the library but I still had my Childcraft books that were so beautifully illustrated. My favorite *poem* was: The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I wanted to be Bess the landlord’s daughter. I wanted to do something heroic/romantic with my life. : )

Caption This!

"Did my last remark go over your head - or was it caught in the underbrush?"

Mr. wOw's Love Affair With George Clooney

Mr. wOw, Mr. Spacely is that other George’s boss (Jetson). haha (This is only important if you are trying to get work as a proofreader which I do try to do from time to time. ; ) Anyway, I don’t think you are a creep, it’s like back in school, or anywhere else for that matter, some people just turn you off, that’s all, nothing personal - just chemistry.

What habit do you have that is silly, time-wasting or childish that you can't abandon?

Dear Missy, how could your Halloween party be coming up in mid-November? I need to know. : ) Anyway, yes, I saw that French Maid commercial you spoke about but my costume? It was years ago & don’t even remember it at all. Honestly. I do remember one year I was Che Guevara, one year I was a 24 year old witch with *braces* on my teeth that had just been put on that day. Halloween. All the tequila in the world couldn’t kill that pain! (and I know because I tried haha). One year I was a ballerina, that was fun but I do not usually dress up. This year we had one little kid come to the house, we live on a dead end street up a really steep hill, never got to many kids coming up here which I hated when we first moved in. Last year a tree just up and fell down across a telephone wire outside and burst into flames. Now, that was pretty exciting. : )

Liz Smith, Cartoonist?

Ooops, I see where they said *silly,* habits, too, Liz. I guess that’s what you meant. Did you know the New Yorker actually has a new thing where people write captions on line and actually design one of their cartoons with their drawings? Have you heard of it? It’s on their page. I really wish I could draw, I would love to do that, just for fun, I love writing captions, jingles, lipstick names, you name it. No! Let ME name it. : )
