My Comments (57 so far…)

Has your mother's style influenced your own? In what way?

My mother always looked wonderful!  She and my father went dancing on a regular basis and she wore silk and color and wonderful shoes!  Our house was warm and full of love and wonderful places to be.  When she was pregnant with our families’ youngest; my brother she made a cocoa and black silk skirt and top.  She saved it and I wore the pieces separately with each of my children!  I took lots of cues from her and I honestly feel my daughters have continued the trend.

One study from Yale says that women are evolving to become shorter and fatter. In recent years have you shrunk or gotten fatter?

I have the "three Ss", scoliosis, stenosis and sciatica.  I have lost about an inch from 5’5" to 5’4".  As far as weight is concerned; I’ve never been under 130 and am at a stable weight now.  I’ll never be as thin as I would like but I’ll settle for stability.  My mother’s comment was always, "don’t get old, you won’t like it.  I don’t feel or consider myself old.  I don’t think any of us do.

Liz Smith: In a World of Faux Stars, Streisand Remains the Real Deal & Pitch-Perfect After All These Years

Barbra is amazing!  Always has been, always will be.  I have spent the last two days listening to both versions of the CD.  It is just wonderful.  I, like so very many others have all albums, CDs, DVDs, etc.  With so much "yuck" going on these days it is nice just to listen to beautiful music.  There are many other artists I admire.  Just something so very special about Barbra.

Fall Books (That'll Get You Going This Autumn), Recommends by Roxanne J. Coady

Hi Green Tears,  I’ve always been a huge fan of Pat Conroy and absolutely loved ‘South of Broad’.  Hope you enjoy it.  I couldn’t put it down.  I just bought ‘Olive Kitteridge’ and look forword to reading it.

Liz Smith: Texas Today – Gone With the Wing-Nuts

If it weren’t so sad, it would be funny.  But, I must also say that this is what makes America so special.  We can disagree so vehemently and yet love the person or people with whom we disagree.  So here’s to Texas; come to New England; we’ll give you hugs, chowdah, and a bit of Atlantic sea breeze that will calm you down.

Liz Smith: After a Terrible Summer, I Need Peaches and Pixie to Amuse Me

Liz, this morning’s column was just such fun!  Fruit and fairies, oh my!  And the snood!  I too remember my mother’s collection; silk illusion with rhinestones, white damask and terry for the beach.  Thanks for getting the day started with a smile!

Are you like your mother?

Some of the nicest compliments I have ever received have been that I am truly my mother’s daughter.  I am her clone and she always got a kick out of it.  At her funeral, one of her childhood friends said that looking at me was like being with Mom when they were young brides.  She was the loveliest woman I have ever known.  It was an honor to be her daughter.

LIZ SMITH FLASH! Sheila Nevins to Be Presented Governors Award by Elaine Stritch

Yea Sheila!!!  Your work is amazing and so are you.  Enjoy your evening at the Emmys; we’ll  be watching and cheering for you.  Couldn’t think of a better presenter than Elaine Stritch.

Happy Birthday, Lily!

Happy Birthday Lily!!  Enjoy your day.

Sen. Edward Kennedy Dies at Age of 77

He carried the torch for so long; loving and caring for Jack and Bobby’s children and for the people of America.  Our country is a better place for having Ted Kennedy in it.  "and choirs of angels take thee to thy rest".  Our memories are strong and long, you will not be forgotten.  Thank you for your service.

Anne Rivers Siddons and the Secret of Her Success

I have read and loved all of Anne Rivers Siddons books; especially Colony.  I just bought Off Season and cannot wait to start reading.

Which season is your favorite?

Green Tears, How lucky you are!!  I do not live in RI anymore but in Western Massachusetts.  It’s not far to get there, but not the same.  I hope to be back by the ocean some day.  Of course wouldn’t you know, I am married to a lovely man who hates the beach!

Which season is your favorite?

I grew up on the ocean in Rhode Island.  I am a beach lover, so I chose summer.  Honestly though, I love the way the ocean is in all seasons, even winter.

Liz Smith: Renée Zellweger – The 'One and Only'!

The lump in my stomache over this healthcare mess is huge.  I will read the Rolling Stone article.  I truly believe that if people would listen instead of scream, we might get somewhere.  I understand it is an enormous issue with more angles than can be counted.  For me the fact is something must be done and it must begin somewhere.
