What do you think accounts for a recent report by Time magazine that women are less happy than they were 40 years ago?

Re: the TIME poll stating that women were happier 40 years ago, I think it depends on the women polled. Women in my old neighborhood - Dorchester, Massachusetts - were among the poorest and suffered greatly in the 50s and 60s because all the good wages went to men, and (the women I knew) could not get credit independently.

This meant, among other things, that they could not buy cars or take care of themselves and their kids without permission from their husbands, who so often were absent or alcoholics.

Believe me, my life is better and I am much happier because, with education, decent jobs, and the ability to receive credit and move around on my own, I can face the the future with more confidence (even in a downturn and with a rapidly changing climate).

When High Heels Mean Danger, by Dr. Suzanne Levine

Indulging in high heels was my fashion passion during my teens and twenties, but now with pearls as my passion, I’m into comfort that can keep me on my feet all day at jewelry shows and presentations!

I love long hair on over 40s, 50s, and 60s. I think it looks great, even if you’re gray. Check out:

You can make up, dress and accessorize to light up your face - good pearl jewelry from your jewelry box (or an online discounter) is a great way to go!

Liz Smith: Was Tabloid Speculation Right About Michael?

Any mistakes Michael Jackson may have made in life he more than paid for, so let him be laid to rest with all the honors he justly earned, and let the past be put to rest. His children deserve respect, opportunity, and dignity, and the world is rich with the legacy of his art and philanthropy.

My hair is thicker and healthier since I stopped coloring and started moisturizing. I now have a face-flattering mane of soft brown-silver-white hair that my husband loves and others admire — and I’m saving money, too!

Gorgeous selection of drop-dead beautiful fashions on some amazing figures, such as Gisele and Elizabeth Hurley. Where are the jewels? Ropes and  ropes of pearls would be stunning and look youthful with the plunging necklines…

Liz Smith: George Clooney as Sinatra?

If anyone could pull off Sinatra, it would be George Clooney. Standing by for the outcome.

The Sisterhood of the Vanishing Paystub, by Sally Koslow

Sounds to me like a hardscrabble ND childhood - to riches - back to belt-tightening story. All too many intelligent, go-getting women who bootstrapped it up from little to nothing now find themselves the first out the corporate door.

Sally’s funny look at at a serious situation, for me resonates and heals. My close-to-six-figure corporate job a few years ago helped me buy a fortune in health care for a mentally ill elder Dad for whom the health care system had no use, as well as a stable, fairly modest lifestyle for my husband and myself, both talented adults with disabilities.

A corporate downturn forced me out, and into a second career selling a luxury product - pearl jewelry - online at less than luxe prices. It’s fun and helps me connect in positive ways with women with whom I once competed in corporate boardrooms.

Internet discounting with cat in tow and husband off at a sales job hasn’t yet replaced my former paycheck, but it’s fun and growing and taking me in directions I wish I’d explored years ago. Better late than never!

All my best to all who struggle.
