Dear Margo: I Hear Ya Knockin', but You Can't Come In

i think my husband handled the jehovah’s witness thing perfeftly.  one week he asked them not to come back.  the next, he asked in a tighter voice.  the third week, he walked out butt naked and invited them in.  they’ve never come near us again.

The Happy Birthday Liz Smith! Reader Forum

happy birthday to one of the great voices of our time a memory i will never, ever forget—- i was sent to do a story on liz smith for New Woman magazine (i think) and when i got to her apartment, every surface was lined with papers and flowers and books and press releases We walked around until Liz finally drawled, ‘oh, the hell with it,’ and we went in and sat side-by-side on her bed for an hour and a half while she entertained me with her wit and terrific stories. hope this is a great year for you xxoo martha frankel

Long Live Gossip and Celebrity Worship

Having been on both end of the gossip spectrum—- i am a celebrity interviewer who has had to ask those embarrassing, intimate questions that no on wants to answer, plus, I have been written about by gossips columnists, including Liz Smith—- i realize that without them, our lives would be paler, less interesting, a drab shade of grey. Long live gossip and the people who write it.

'A Friend Stopped By' With Suzy Welch

i can barely see through my tears. this is the cautionary tale none of us wants to hear—- that when we love someone, we have to be there for them. i had my own Lulu, a daring, funny, also childless woman, who molded my life in many important ways. thank you for this wonderful story.

Texas Cowgirl and 'Tenderfoot' Memories

Loved, loved, loved my Nudie’s cowboy shirt from years ago. Wore it to death. And I adore the windmills. Wish I could put some up on my property outside of Woodstock NY. I so enjoy the ride from LA to Palm Springs, because when you get to the windmills, everyone slows down and just gets hypnotized. Great story. Thanks

What wakes you at 4 a.m.?

pure and simple, worrying about money. it’s the scariest time of day, and it’s the scariest thing to worry about, so they seem to go hand in hand. martha frankel
