Liz Smith: A New Book on Hollywood's Star of Stars – Elizabeth Taylor

Someone once wrote that Jackie O was our country’s dream wish for a queen, and that Elizabeth Taylor was our wish for a real-life Scarlett O’ Hara. As a great admirer of Taylor, I think that’s about right ;)

Liz Smith: 'Kitty' and 'Babe' – The Broderick Twins

Liz will survive, but like Mr. Bassett says, at this stage of her life, it will leave a gap: Taylor has said she often considered Jackson "family."

And yes, Liz knows how to give a heartfelt, memorable quote under dire circumstances…God knows she’s had enough practice!

Liz Smith: 'Kitty' and 'Babe' – The Broderick Twins

Liz, you’re right, of course. ET soldiers on, as always. Taylor has dealt with death from a very young age.
James Dean was her first experience of a loved one dying prematurely, with his tragic car accident near the end of filming 1956’s "Giant."
The following year Monty Clift nearly died in a car crash after leaving Taylor’s home when they had just started shooting "Raintree County."
The next year Mike Todd died in a plane crash when Taylor was starting to film "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." She was supposed to be with him, but a fever kept her home…and alive.
Three years, Taylor herself nearly died of pneumonia during the epic, "Cleopatra."
And it goes on…
And so does Elizabeth Taylor, for however longer she graces our presence.
