What one book must all young women read before they turn 21?

Kelly - Oh, I just loved “She’s Come Undone” - sad, poignant and ultimately triumphant. Great writing.

Which meal can't you miss?

In my house it is considered a delicacy ;-)

HerTube: Happy Birthday, Paul Anka!

I was 7 years old when “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” was released. Funny how it seems I was too young and yet I’ve always known and loved this song. My best friend had 3 older brothers who listened and wailed to the music of the late ‘50’s, and we were able to go along for the ride. The yearning in this song is discernable and that is the essence, the core of why it appeals to us, no matter our age. When were we ever so open hearted and vulnerable? With such open joy on our faces? And isn’t it grand to feel that way again for a moment?

THANK YOU - this is so great, it will make navigating the comments so much easier. I have not had much time lately, and so this ROCKS!

In celebration of Kay Ryan's appointment as the 16th Poet Laureate, tell us: What is your favorite poem of all time?

Sell Out Agitation Waltz” Richard Farina Well…. You know the reason that nobody’s pleasin’ The one whose been freezin’ him out. The times are unsteady and nobody’s ready to sleep in a bed full of doubt. But if you want to fool around and run around all over town there’s no tellin’ where it will end. The teachers say you gotta stay in school just another day and study the logical trend. So cut your hair and never stare at people who ain’t aware that every mornin’ they wake up dead. Take off your boots and find your roots and join the ranks of young recruits who have a collectiveized head. You’ve been a gassin’ and you’ve been harrassing the one whose been passing you by. The right time for groovin’ is always improvin’ provided you learn to comply. Society is never geared to people who grow a beard or little girls with holes in their ears. They’re liable to hunt you down and dress you in a wedding gown And offer substantial careers. They’ll buy you a suit of clothes and pay to get another nose so no one will turn you away. You’ll wear a tie and hope to die if anymore you try to buy From people with nothin’ to say. So find a loose alternative if that’s the way you want to live and give up unusual friends. There’s still time to straighten out and learn how to be devout and make your gray flannel amends. So cut your hair and never stare at people who ain’t aware that every mornin’ they wake up dead. Take off your boots and find your roots and join the ranks of young recruits who have a collectivized head.

What music makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? Why?

Okay, I’m late to the party AGAIN……but I really had to think about this. Music is such an important element / necessity in my life. Remembering one verse or aspect of a song can bring me to tears. I took the question literally and these titles are but a few that actually bring about the result of raised hairs on the back of my neck: Franz Liszt - “Hungarian Rhapsodies” especially No. 2 Jefferson Airplane - “Embryonic Journey” Leo Kottke - “Vaseline Machine Gun” (12 string guitar - if you are not familiar with this one, please look for it on You Tube - you won’t be sorry) Richard and Mimi Farina - “Raven Girl”, “Dopico”, “Reflections in a Crystal Wind”. Actually, anything they ever sang together is pure magic. She is Joan Baez’ sister, he died young in a motorcycle crash. I’ve been listening since I was 15 years old and never will I stop. I love all types of music, as long as it is “real” and touches me in a way that makes me think/dance/shake/cry/shout. Yeah. I hope somebody is still listening.

Sex Trafficking of Children in America? Tragic but True

Deni - THANK YOU. I’ve been away and not able to read or contribute at all. But this is SUCH a PROFOUND statement, from start to finish, I just had to say so. This really resonates with me, and many others I am sure.

'How Lily and I Tried to Celebrate July the 4th'

Thanks for the laughs, ladies! And the tour down memory lane - I grew up in Hollywood so the “virtual visit” was a treat. Happy Independence Day!!

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

Elenor - Thank you. I appreciate your post. My mother taught me that “always” and “never” are all encompassing words and to be careful how I used them. You wrote: “Liberals always want to control who can say what and decide for the rest of us what is acceptable.” What I find is that some conservatives want to control who can DO what and decide for the rest of us what is acceptable. We’ll just have to agree to disagree again. Have a Happy Independance Day.

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

Eleanor - All I can say to you is, if Ann Coulter is who you want to be your voice in the media, you are welcome to her. Deni said it best, in answer to a post by Carol - this is about integrity. If you think AC has it, then we must agree to disagree. I did not try to silence her. I did not respond with intolerance and hatred. Please don’t put words in my mouth. And “whether I like it or not” I am aware of others with differing opinions in this country. I question WoW’s reasoning for her appearance here. As Carol said, if they respect her, I would sure like to know why.

Deborah - sarcasm and hyperbole are definitely popular forms of expression. However, I wouldn’t call AC’s remarks “witty”, not even close. She was QUITE serious in her remarks on religion and they were objectionable on so many levels. I’ll give you sarcasm on the women voting issue. If she had her own program she could say whatever she wanted, couldn’t she? Please remember, my earlier posts simply outlined my objection to her ridiculous statements, not that she be banned from this site. Is she a foolish wit or a witty fool? I know what I think.

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

Eleanor - Methinks that, while AC did not break any rules in her post, she breaks them in her everyday rants. Racist? Personal attacks? Oh, yes. Live by the word, die by the word. Make no mistake, AC is getting exactly what she wants.

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

Bonnie - we were posting at the same time! You did succeed in making me voice exactly what (to me) was objectinable about her. And I hope I made MY point about how she does not make factual statements but incendiary ones. I appreciate the opportunity to verbalize exactly how and why I feel and think the way I do about her.

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

Thank you, Frannie. Her brand of “whatever” will not chase me off, nor do I want to limit what can and cannot be posted. I do hope that others respond in kind. For the record, though, I hate her guts!!!!!

Ann Coulter's Birthday Wish for Bush (and a Michael-Moore-Free Definition of Patriotism)

The one that sticks in MY mind is the CNBC interview in October 2007, when she was asked if she had her way, what would this country look like. Forgetting politics, immigration, abortion, etc. The exact question to her was: “What is the Ann Coulter prescription that would make the fabric of this country different” ? And her reply was that we would all be “christian, tolerant people who defend America”. She then tried to say that all Christians were only “perfected Jews” (Old Testament / New Testament). But the interviewer, who is Jewish, wasn’t having any of it and asked her if she felt he needed to be a Christian. Her response to that was “Well, if you were a PRACTICING Jew, but you’re not”. She then went on to say how much diversity she found in “MEGACHRISTIAN churches accross America.” And that Christians simply were on the “fast track” and how Jews could be “perfected” if they became Christian, too. I found the whole exchange to be abhorrant. But, you’ll say, was it either untruthful or unfair? And that is her vitriolic genius. She doesn’t MAKE statements of FACT - she makes OPINION statements, such as the above, or how the 9/11 victims are whiners, or Elizabeth Edwards was using her cancer as a political ploy to gain sympathy. Or how about the statement she made, around the same time, in the New York Observer, that “a womans right to vote should be taken away because they vote stupidly” . Ann Coulter’s SOLE purpose is to make outlandish statements that defy intelligence and she has no place in journalism, let alone an earned right to be there. Bonnie, you talk about “misbehavior” which is defined as “improper or bad behavior” and that can all depend on who’s ox is being gored. The other definition is “inappropriate” and, if nothing else, Ann Coulter is the very definition of THAT.
