Joan Ganz Cooney on Being Catholic: I Woke Up One Day and Said to Myself, 'I Don't Believe Any of It'

For me, sacred music in church has always been its spiritual soul - so I follow the music.

Lost Heroines: Elizabeth Keckley's Road From Slavery to Tell-All Scandal

Here is another story of a special woman who died destitute - what happened? I always want to know so I can try to avoid it.

How many weddings will you attend this month?

Would be happy to go to weddings to provide music! (I have a recorder/keyboard duo!)

New York Governor: 'I Do' Want Out-of-State Gay Marriages to Be Recognized

I do wonder why you continue to hang out here, though - Do you enjoy just being an irritant? That’s a peculiar mindstate, I would think…perhaps you would be happier elsewhere.

Gypsy Mary Wells's Definitive Guide to the Med, Part One

For those who cannot manage the Mediterranean (& it’s not cheap nowadays!) I recommend the Channel Islands area at the beginning of the Central Coast of California. Much less crowded & the same views of the sea!! I look at pix of the Rivieras of Europe, which I understand get crowded at the height of the season, and then see the magnificent Channel waters, and think - ah! Why bother go to Europe?

Is Congress Forcing CEOs to 'Fire U.S. Workers As Fast As They Can?'

Unalloyed capitalism soon veers off into economic ruthlessness. It cares only for figures & spreadsheets & f#**k the rest! That’s why it needs to be constrained for the general good! That’s why the Pure Food & Drug Act was created - to save us from dangerous and adulterated food & drugs. (They are cheaper!) And similarly other government brakes on the beastliness of untrammeled capitalism that were introduced in the Progressive Era. That was after the golden age of 90’s and the robber barons - and we have our own breed of robber barons now - If they want to live in Dubai, go let them. But don’t let them get any advantages of doing so and claiming U.S. Citizenship at the same time! We have to police and rein in the wild horses of capital. And the time is NOW. We need another injection of the old Progressive spirit.

Liz Smith: Sex's Party Was a Bang That Would Make Samantha Jones Proud

Liz what is your take on the mini-riot that supposedly took place outside because the film’s people had given away too many tix to the preview - and then they somehow refused to open up the balcony of Radio City to fit them all in? Surely the production co. could have afforded THAT. Love to see all those women so eager to see a chick flick, though. Give us more costume movies, like the old days & we will come!

Liz Smith: Sex's Party Was a Bang That Would Make Samantha Jones Proud

I found one wandering about. It was music that brought us together. I recommend it. Oh, I was dressed in a Scottish style Renaissance outfit, too! Throwing yourself at a guy never really works out in the long term, in my experience. The young girls are off in the wrong direction being so tarty….

Too Thin? To Jail! Should the French Government Take the Matter of Eating Disorders Into Its Own Hands? by Judith Weinraub

Those ana websites are ultimately promoting self-destruction, because that’s what starvation leads to - death. Your electrolytes get out of whack & you die from heart failure! So why should death-promoting sites be allowed to flourish, and even have advertising revenue? I agree with the French. Make it hard for them.

Candice Bergen and wowOwow Grace the Cover of 'Hampton Style' Magazine

Ah! We are all a bit envious of Candice’s enduring charms. To have such bones!…My image of the Hamptons is the sandy coastal environs of a camp I went to on Gardner’s Bay when I was a teenager. Learned to sail that summer. Think the camp was an old farm and the barn had become the art studio. I ate a lot of blowfish, because no one else liked it & came back very trim because of all the swimming in the cold water. It was charming then. I am sure some multimillionaire has long since bought it up and put some absurdly magnificent architectural display on it - but I liked it the way it was. But I prefer funky, quiet places. They suit me better. I find the other to be exhausting, even if I do manage it.

Do you still think about the 'one that got away'?

Yes - we all think of the one who got away - but mine went away of his own free will, because he didn’t really love me back - the old story. But my love was a truer sort & he still haunts my dreams, unbidden. What does one do about that? It’s an unconcious infidelity of sorts. I don’t know.

Dina Matos McGreevey is asking for alimony of $51k a month for 13 months from ex-NJ governor Jim McGreevey. Does she deserve it?

I don’t live in such rarified financial circles. That seems like an awful lot of $ to me - I could live quite comfortably on what she would be getting per month! There seems to be a rancor between such couples. Certainly they married for reasons other than love and devotion - more career, I think. And some women do make a career out of marrying for $ and then getting whatever they can out of it. I think that’s a shameful business - one is selling oneself, after all. As Churchill said once, we have already established what you are, all we are now discussing is the price…

How much wine do you drink daily?

Love my red wine & watch it that my tolerance doesn’t go up too high, due to the alcoholic tendencies of my forebears. But they were into whiskey - quite different stuff. And the red does help the cholesterol. To avoid sulfates, get the better stuff - fewer chemicals - Actually, fyi Gallo Livingston Cellars makes nice red vin du table. I love the other if I can afford it!

What were you told a 'real lady' had to do?

My mother never thought of “ladies” but did teach us to sew and cook and consider other people - My father quoted Shakespeare & said a woman’s voice should be ever soft & low - He also hated to see me swear - other than that…

HerTube: Frozen in Grand Central

Remember be-ins and the performance art of the 60’s and 70’s? Much wilder! But this was fun to see!
