Mr. wOw: Falling in Love Again With 'Marlene'

I’ve always loved Marlene. Many, many years ago I bought a set of b & w photos from the MOMA, and recently discovered them tucked away. Glad I kept them and looking forward to the film.

Cybill Shepherd: No Longer Faking It (Video)

Wonderful interview with a woman I’ve always admired.

Hello, Cupid! What are you planning for Valentine's Day?

I don’t know if we’ll go out, most likely not. But, everyday is Valentine’s Day with my husband. When we’re getting ready to go somewhere and I want to change clothes I’ll say, “I have to change.” My husband always says, “Don’t change, honey.” After 22 years I still laugh. And I know he loves me no matter what….

Who is the most famous person you've ever met? What were the circumstances?

Growing up in NYC took a school field trip to see The Fantastiks. Met Elaine Stritch. As an adult, working in a restaurant in NC, met the queen…Ellen Burstyn, that was a thrill. At the same restaurant met Vince Vaughn and John Travolta. Now in hospitality, met Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter and Bill Cosby. All very nice, down to earth. Just regular folk, like us.

What's the best part of Thanksgiving?

I’ll be working. Serving my guests at a beautiful resort in the South. The weather is gorgeous, spirits seem high. Then when I get off I am going over to friends to eat, drink, and relax.

What do people always say to you that drives you crazy?

I hate it when people say “expresso” for espresso.

HerTube: Happy Birthday, Jackson Browne (Video)

Happy Birthday Jackson! “Let the music keep your spirits high…” Perhaps some of my favorite lyrics ever.

Are you more comfortable with your body now than you were 20 years ago?

I agree about the confidence. At 52, I am definitely more confident, and don’t mind how I look, but am disappointed because I am not exercising as much, and know I could look “better.” But, obviously it’s not bothering me THAT much, or my butt would be out there running!

If you were a rock star, who would you be?

First choice would be Joplin, naturally. Big Brother & the Holding Co was one of the first albums after the Beatles that I purchased all by myself! And when I had my daughter, she would stop crying if I played Janis. I always wondered if she had somehow received a bit of Janis’s soul reincarnated. But, I think I would now want to be Lucinda Williams..talk about writing. Gawd! She is awesome. And can paint a picture of a woman’s feelings, desires, relationships with family, etc. Then I’d HAVE to have a go at being my favorite rockers..Drive-By-Truckers.

What television show do you miss the most?

DEADWOOD on HBO and Seinfeld. I also wish The Sheild would return before the fall.

Mary Wells: 'Birthdays Are Bad for Your Health'

I am 51. I was just saying to my husband the other day that I thought I’ve gotten prettier as I’ve aged. He said, “Honey, you’ve always been beautiful.” And I do love it when people tell me how beautiful my skin is and that I don’e look my age. But, what is 51 supposed to look like?????

What is the most life-changing book you've ever read?

Mine would have to be Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramanhansa Yoganandi. I have bought numerous copies intending to read it again, then end up giving it away. Can’t keep it on my shelf!

'Change your shoes, change your life.' Is there any truth to this idea for you?

Shoes make the outfit?? I don’t know…I think the woman makes the outfit. The older I get the less I want. I once worked in a department store in the Women’s Shoe Dept. I thought, how hard can it be to sell beautiful shoes? Well, let me tell you…”My heel is slipping…” “Don’t these come in narrow?” “Is my heel slipping?” You get the idea. Needless to say, I usually spent my paycheck. Even with employee discounts, I was broke. And my sales weren’t very good because I wanted to stay in the stock room to ORGANIZE!! They cut my pay and I left. But, got a pair of Cole Haan loafers for $15, Donald Pliner tres cool, red loafers for $30. Living in the south allows me to be barefoot most of the time. Which is my preference. However when I HAVE to wear shoes, I find my black cowboy boots to be the most comfortable…walked around NYC all day with no complaints from my dogs. My husband wore his cowboy boots all through Europe. Now my problem is my cowboy boots don’t go with everything, but I don’t care. When I wear them I feel powerful, comfortable, and totally cool!

Why do you live where you do? How rooted are you to that place?

Actually, I’ve been living in the South for 30 years! I don’t know where the time went.

Why do you live where you do? How rooted are you to that place?

I agree, this website is addictive, validating, comforting, and amazing. I grew up in NYC and moved around the city frequently growing up. Left when I was 21. I’ve lived in the South now for 20 years. I will always be a NYC girl, but have embraced the South, as well. Whenever I return to NY it is like I never left. My husband and I often talk about retiring in NY. But, I think Austin, TX might be the place or maybe Provence? Lived in Gainesville, FL, where we raised our beautiful, intelligent “gypsy” daughter. She inherited the “gypsy” gene. She’s in Israel working on her Master’s in Creative Writing, wants to be a travel writer. And most recently had a story about the Darfur refugees in Israel published in the Jerusalem Post. Yeahh!!! We’ve moved for my husband’s job - Wilmington, NC, Monroe, LA. And for my job - St.Simons Island, GA. It’s funny because I’ve always wanted a house near the beach and have that now. But still get itchy feet. I still want to live in the south of France someday. I picture myself growing old there. With a long, gray braid - sometimes in a bun on top of my head. Don’t know what I’ll be doing exactly, but that’s where I visualize myself in my later years.
