Lily on the Tony Experience

Just reading these responses shows you, Lily, that what you want to accomplish is happening here today. People feel a connection to you and each other through this site and through you making the video and people responding to it Also, your responses to comments also connects us all. It seems easier than I would think to do, to connect and see ourselves as noble, fragile, tender, etc.

Lily Tomlin: My Tony Awards Home Video

Hey Lily, I love seing how “thing work” and you gave us a first class peek at the nuts and bolts of “stardom”. It looks like it takes a lot of frustration tolerance and patience to perform. We the audience are the fortunate recipients of the final version of all that work. We really appreciate it. You may not realize that, but now you are reading real time genuine feedback. Your Broadway work in “The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe” changed my life by re-affirming my belief that creative, insightful, talented and courageous women are the best asset the world holds for us. Thanks, Lili!

A Visit With Emma Thompson, Plus a Sneak Peek at 'Brideshead Revisited'

I second all the sung praises of Emma Thompson. I read that in college (Cambridge) she was called “Emma Talent”. She also shared a flat with Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French. Can you imagine that combo!. My movie favorites were “Howard’s End” and “Remains of the Day”. She was quite young in “Howard’s”. She and Anthony Hopkins were a near perfect duo. I’m so glad she is back in action after taking time off a while ago when her daughter was young. Looking forward to aeeing all her new films.

What does being a woman mean to you? When was the first time you knew it?

At age twelve, I was standing in the driveway with my friend, Hughie. We had been playing Treasure Hunt, climbing trees, running over the field of small hills. Hughie, got a strange expression on his face as he said, “As the sun shines on your hair, I can see some red mixed in with the brown”. I almost fell over. At first, I hadn’t the slighest idea about what he was saying. Then I knew, he saw me as female. I ran away and never played with him again.

Joan Ganz Cooney Sees the Bigger Picture

Hey, Liz, have you checked out Mephisto shoes? They changed my life. NOt for dress wear, but for every other kind of activity. I love faces, not necessarily stereotypically good looking faces, although that is also a pleasure. Also, I like a sort of “taken care of” look, like no strings hanging from hems or colors clashing. I respect the time that it takes people to appear in public if it is reflected in their appearance.

Happy Bastille Day! Who would you like to send to the guillotine?

Hey, folks, we’re talking about thoughts and wishes, not actions. Lighten up and enjoy the relief of spewing out hateful wishes on people who deserve the worst. Unhappily, the wishes won’t come true. So I would like to see the heads and other body parts chopped off of George Bush, my ex-husband, Osama bin Laden, my next door neighbor, the man who murdered the therapist in New York City, all those talking heads on CNN, and of course, Fox News, Dick Cheney.. I can go on and on.

'How Lily and I Tried to Celebrate July the 4th'

Lily and Jane, Did you even think about the CONTAINERS that your hotdogs and popcorn were in? Were they styrofoam? Non-biodegradable? Were they plastic -leachinginto your hotdogs? Loved the narrative!! How about bringing it to Broadway?

What advice do you have for Hillary Clinton?

Aftr seeing how supportive Chelsea was to her mother in the primaries, I’d love to see the two of them work together to improve conditions for women. I know that the grandeur and maybe the power of the presidency wouldn’t be involved, but I think that Hillary has her own very important historical and political reputation that might be used to enhance women’s lives. Maybe in the health care field or in helping women internationally. Perhaps Hillary could use her clout to pursuade Obama to create a post for health care or womens’ issues. For sure, I think fighting the old boys is just robbing Hillary of valuable energy. She is too smart for them.

Lesley Stahl, Cynthia McFadden: Sexism Went Unchallenged During Hillary Campaign

There is no doubt in my mind that eveyone hates women, men ate women, and women hate other women and themselves because they are hated in society. Perfect example is the person who posted above and uses “Dr.” before his name. If a woman dares to compete with me, she will be a target for attack. I am amazed that writers who see themselves as Feminists (Anna Quindlan— MaureenDowd) joined in on the mud slinging. I love that Geraldine Ferraro spoke up in such a genuine way. She knows the terrain that Hillary is on (George Bush Sr. once called Ferraro a “nice little peice of ass”). and Gerry has nothing to lose. I thin the fact that Hillary is a wife and mother, her roles have been used against her. It is clear that her daughter is a perfectly lovely and classy young woman. But I think that people see Hillary as a stern “mom” to the world. I give her so much credit for struggling her way through the attacks and distortions. And I hope there will be other women like her who won’t be fraid to run for high office. It sure looks like a forbidden leap.

How much wine do you drink daily?

I’m in that group of breast cancer survivors (15 yrs.) Every questionnaire I filled out at Memorial Sloan Kettering asked how much alcohol I consumed. This was after the smoking question on the form. So I deduced that there must be a connection between alcohol consumption and breast cancer. I’ve just recently read about a big study that confirms that. Boy, do I miss that delicious wine!

Joan Ganz Cooney on Being Catholic: I Woke Up One Day and Said to Myself, 'I Don't Believe Any of It'

Thank you, Joan, for opening up this area of conversation. You must have resolved any reservations you have had about being “disloyal” or a “sinner” because I’m sure you know what a hot topic this is. I attended Catholic school for eight years. During that time, I was forced into silence and self-degradation because of what I experienced. Now at age 67, I’m still trying to think and speak my own spontaneous thoughts even though I have had a highly successful career as a psychoanalyst. When I first openly questioned the existence of God, I was eighteen. The priest I spoke to assured me that, as Thomas Aquiness said, there wouldn’t not be a wondrous natural universe without its creation by a supernatural being. That held me for ten years. When I got pregnant with my third child in six years trying to use the “rhythm” method, I stomped away from the Catholic Church and everything connected with it. I have also never looked back or regretted that decision. To my amazement, what replaced that “faith” became a respect and love for human nature, optimism, hard work and decency. It is very hard for me now to see the forceful impact that organised religion has on human behavior. The only thing I do miss in reaching the understanding that respect doesn’t eminate from the supernatural is thatI feel a certain lack of protection that I had when I believed that there was an afterlife or that a persons “sins” could be “forgiven” or that a superntural force could make good things happen. It is so much more difficult to struggle with life’s problems without “imaginary” protection.

Lily Tomlin: When the 'Murphy Brown' Show Ended, I Cried My Eyes Out

Lily, what you didn’t mention is my favorite, your one-woman show. I remember thinking it was more therapeutic than ten years of therapy. My favorite was the “Rich Lady” who was so vacant. Also the organ playing cocktail lounge lady. And whan I saw you dressed up as a male lounge lizzard, I thought I’d die. I had never seen such a great impersonation. And the bag lady wearing the umbrella hat. And the imperious teenager who would scream at her parents”Please stop talking about that cake” as they droned on and on. Also, as I am getting rid of plastic bags, I remember you talking about how absurd it was to buy something in a plastic bag, then to put it in a paper bag and then to put it in a plastic garbage bag. Your show was way ahead of its time. You and Jane Wagner are a magical genious team. Thanks for the memories.
