Cemeteries Dying Out: Mr. wOw's Plan B

Deber,

What a great story. She must be a hoot!

Caption This!

ET finally got home!

Mr. wOw, 'Whip It' Director Drew Barrymore and 'That Crappy/Wonderful Thing Called Life'

Mr. Wow,

Always enjoy your contributions. I’ve been a Drew fan since ET…and I’m a Lindsay fan too. Maybe you’ve really got something…maybe Drew could mentor LL. As I’ve said before, she needs at least one adult in her life and neither of her parents qualify.

Excerpt From A Gate at the Stairs, by Lorrie Moore

I’m forcing myself to keep reading this. The author has a gift for wry observation and description (almost as wacky as David Sedaris), but I agree with Monica (above) that she doesn’t move the story along. I was hoping for a page turner;-)

What's your No. 1 tip when asking for a promotion or a raise at work?

RR,

And then draw up a plan to meet those goals. Consider checking in with the boss sometime during the year to see how you’re doing.

Brilliant! I think we have a future as a career coach team;-)

What's your No. 1 tip when asking for a promotion or a raise at work?

RR,

Be prepared to tell why you deserve it, and when asked, do so succinctly. Be confident and calm. Don’t argue, just present your case.

Exactly. And if you’re met with resistance, ask: "What would I have to do to qualify for the raise or promotion?"

In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

I don’t trust Olberman…I think he has a chip on his shoulder and an agenda outside of politics. Rachel is plenty smart and I like her presentation of issues. But sometimes she makes me cringe and turn the channel when she’s too smug to be tolerated.

As far as MSNBC goes, I consistently like Morning Joe.

Mr. wOw's Hair-Raising Shriver Report

Mr. Wow,

I was also distracted by Ms. Shriver’s mane! I assumed she has extensions. Somehow that amount of hair just doesn’t seem genuine on a woman of her age.

No Slacks in the Office: Gail Collins and Lesley Stahl Relive the Birth of Feminism

Susan,

I entered college the same year you did…a small Catholic women’s college with the same rules and procedures you describe. We could not wear slacks or shorts anywhere on campus except the gym or hockey field! When we left campus, we had to wear gloves, hat, hose. The hat and glove thing changed while I was there, but the no slacks rule continued through 1967 when I graduated…and maybe beyond. (There was an urban folk tale that Sister Mary Whatever came into a dorm room. One of the residents was naked; the other had on shorts. Sister gave the girl in shorts demerits!)

I’m guilty of never telling my daughter about our lives back then. Guess when she didn’t believe the girls’ basketball rules, I gave up;-)

Liz Smith: Jon and Kate Plus the Lohans – Mommies and Daddies Dearest?

Gee Liz, Why don’t you tell us how you really feel about the Goslins;-)

My heart breaks for Lindsay Lohan. I think she’s a real talent and a hard-working soul. If only she’d had at least one grownup for a parent.

Liza Donnelly's Cartoon of the Week: Hiring Practices

Two of my favorite quotes:

“Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men in order to be thought half as good. Luckily this is not difficult.” Charlotte Whitton (1896-1975, Canadian writer, Mayor of Ottawa)

“If the hours are long enough and the pay is short enough, someone will say it’s women’s work.” anon

LIZ SMITH FLASH! Tooting Our Women's Horns?

I did see Cynthia and HRC in Moscow. Great interview…Cynthia is so natural and engaging it brought out the best in Secretary Clinton. Kudos.

And kudos to Joan for today’s honors…and for Liz for running the show!

Fools Rush In, by E.D. Hill

I agree with Ms. Hill that baby steps are the way to go. But I think we should start with cleaning up the alleged waste, abuse and fraud in Medicare. According to the DC types, that should save us billions of dollars…which can then be used to insure the uninsured. And…cleaning up waste and abuse doesn’t take an act of Congress.

In the movie of your life, what actress would play you? What would be the title of the film?

Oh Behave!

In my youth, people occasionally told me I resembled Candice! I think they were being too kind, but I was always flattered since she’s been a fave of mine for years. Candice and I are the same age…though I must say she’s aged much more gracefully than I. So…in a movie about moi (actually, it would be a ‘short,’) I vote for Candice!

The Ladies Professional Golf Association is looking for a new Chief Executive Officer. Is it important that the CEO be a woman?

Who decides on this? Do the members vote or is there a board who hires the CEO? If there’s a board, who’s on the board…men and women or just women? I’m not privy to what the job entails or what the goals of the association are. I think the selection should be based on who can best accomplish the goals.
