Liz Smith on the Arms of Michelle: Is the Issue More Than Flesh? … Candy and Tori, Spelling 'Dysfunction' in a Battle of Memoirs

As a matter of fact I started my post with "please"….

However, I’m no longer interested in your response.

Prop 8 Is About More Than Gay Marriage

Ah, yes, the silly old right wing fundamentalist diversionary tactic, unearthed once again, employing the same ridiculous arguments. Let me ask you a question. Do you know of even one mother or daughter who want to marry? Do you know of even one brother or sister who want to marry? Because I have never heard of one person who has expressed that desire. And if you are being honest, you haven’t either. This article is about a group of people, numbering in the millions, who had already been granted a legal right - a right that was taken away from them, largely because of the big bankrolling of sensational advertising by the Mormon church and other religious organizations that still don’t understand the separation of church and state.

Please provide proof and sources to back up every one of your assertions.

"Her record on charitable contributions is a sad testiment (sic) to her real intentions."

"She welcomes this type of discourse, she invites it. She knows what she has started, it is no mistake. I believe that she is a narcissist that will find every way to rub her position in the nose of this Nation that she looks to with contempt"

These scurrilous paragraphs express only one opinion - namely yours. Unless you know Mrs. Obama personally, have access to her bank account, have heard her express her thoughts on these subjects, you know nothing. You are only stating what you want to believe about her with absolutely not one fact to support your insulting remarks.

Prop 8 Is About More Than Gay Marriage

Beneath all the legalize and hyperbole, there is only one term that describes the passage of Prop. 8: Discrimination. Californians, and all Americans for that matter, ought to remember that discrimination against any group of citizens for any reason is unconstitutional. Justice has a way of being meted out in surprising ways, and those who so adamantly supported Prop. 8 may be shocked at some future date when the people vote to strip away a right they believe to be inherently theirs.

Obama Establishing White House Women's Council

I love this President! We’ve been waiting for so long for women to be heard by the White House. This Council is the beginning of a new era for women to influence governmental policy. Now, let’s get busy and pass the ERA!

Joan Juliet Buck Reflects on Life After a Friend's Death

One of my closest friends had a heart attack yesterday. She, the healthiest of all of us, the go-getter, the natural foods consumer, the walker, the humorist, the traveller - ten years younger than I - she had a deadly heart attack. And I still can’t believe it. I lay awake most of the night thinking about her, thinking about the unexpected and the unfairness. I thought about how, regardless of how carefully we plan and how safe we feel, we just never know what is going to happen. And how much I’ve left undone and how overwhelming that feels. Most of all, I’m thankful that my friend is in an excellent cardiac unit, is recovering from the surgery that barely saved her life. And I’m putting on my sweats and going for a long walk.

Rise 'n' Shine: What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?

Check the weather. If it’s sunny outside, I get up. If it’s raining or snowing, I go back into hibernation.

The Memory Keepers, by Michele Neff Hernandez

I was so moved by your words, Michele. Your love for your husband radiates through the gift of his shoes to those people who will walk more comfortably because of them. After my mother died I was reluctant to give away some articles of her clothing that I particularly loved seeing her wear. She was elegant, her perfume lingered, the shades of her scarves always complimented her. I wanted those tangible reminders. But my daughter, wiser than I, said, "Mom, Grandma doesn’t need these things any more. And you don’t either. You have so much of her just by being you." So the clothes were donated and I became the memory-keeper for my family. It has spurred me on to write about my mother, to remember, not her clothes, but her essence - personality, humor, uniqueness. My mother often visits me in my dreams, and invariably we are laughing together. I rarely remember what she is wearing - the gift of her visit is what I treasure.

Rush Limbaugh Bungles 'Constitution' Quote

Mugsy - so glad you brought up what we can actually do to help out. I attended a women’s leadership conference over the weekend and I was glad to hear one woman in my group speak out about the economic crisis in positive terms. She said she was "invigorated to help," a phrase we built on in our discussion. When I came home I made a list of what I could do for my community. Yesterday, I took bags of food to my local Food Bank, where the line to qualify for food was a long one. But the donations were pouring in, too. I remember my mother telling me that during the Depression the acts of kindness by strangers were the glue that kept people together. Whenever there is a paradigm shift, like the one we’re experiencing, we’re presented with a chance to tap into our higher selves. That’s where we find the best of who we are - volunteering, donating, listening. This is our opportunity, and I feel sorry for those people who are stuck in the muck of anger, hatred and blame. If they could turn all that negative energy into positive actions, not only would they be doing good, they’d be doing well.

Can You Believe She's 40?

Forty? Are you kidding? I’d give my eye teeth to be forty again!

Liz Smith, Explorer of America

Liz - if you have a chance to visit Yellowstone, don’t let it pass you by! You will be overcome with respect for Nature’s spectacular displays, and if you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself standing not too many feet away from a bison!

A call for something positive! What has made you laugh lately? (A book, a movie, a show, a joke?)

I agree, Frannie. British comedy is in a class by itself. With an economy of words, so cleverly delivered, the Brits are hilarious! As Time Goes By is just plain wonderful with so many funny, loveable characters. Have you ever noticed how Judi Dench’s facial expressions speak whole paragraphs?
