Liz Smith on the Arms of Michelle: Is the Issue More Than Flesh? … Candy and Tori, Spelling 'Dysfunction' in a Battle of Memoirs

The "bare arms controversy" has little, if anything, to do with Mrs. Obama’s arms, which most people agree, are lovely. The real issue is her assertiveness and refusal to be a subservient First Lady, trotting two paces behind her husband. For those writers who say that Michelle Obama is "just an average woman" who would make no mark on history were it not for the fact that her husband is President, please check her biographical information. Michelle Obama is a powerful, educated, accomplished woman, a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School.

In 1993, Michelle Obama became founding executive director of Public Allies Chicago, an Americorps National Service Program. There she provided internships and leadership training for young adults pursuing public-service careers. Obama became executive director of community affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 2002. She initiated neighborhood-outreach programs, recruited volunteers, and increased staff diversity and minority contracting. She established a collaboration with physicians and clinics to provide primary care to low-income residents who would otherwise use the hospital emergency room.

These are credentials and accomplishments that most of us, including many former First Ladies, could only aspire to.

MIchelle Obama is the kind of role model I want for my granddaughters - a woman who respects herself and who is strong, generous of heart and talented.

Happy Birthday to wOw

A friend told me about wOw nearly a year ago, and I was thrilled to think that a website would focus on topics important to intelligent, thoughtful women, invited to come together to offer our opinions. For several months, wOw was my companion, along with my morning cup of tea, and I began to look for the posts of people I’d grown to enjoy and respect. Sadly, that has all changed. My friend left wOw in disgust, taking two other talented readers/posters with her. In less than a year wOw has deteriorated, allowing the website to be ambushed by people who constantly use hate-speech, racist and antisemitic language and who have no useful comments to make about any topic. I do check in, still, hopeful that wOw management realizes that they will lose their best contributors if this general tone continues. The high points of wOw were the topics that generated humor and analysis, with comments offered by some of the most original and brightest writers I’ve had the pleasure to read.  wOw is still in its early days, and if I could give one piece of advice to wOw management, I’d suggest you read carefully what is being posted here, take it seriously, and confer with those who manage the content of other successful websites where civil conversations are the foundation of those successes. A (very cautiously optimistic) happy birthday.

Liz Peek: Stock Market Continues to Vote Nobama

Yes, Kay, the Chinese do own our debt. The real question is how did that happen? Certainly now during the six weeks of President Obama’s administration.

A call for something positive! What has made you laugh lately? (A book, a movie, a show, a joke?)

The Brits have always made me laugh out loud. Dawn French as The Vicar of Dibley, the Ab Fab cast - all of them, including Edina,Patsy, Saffy, Gran and BubblesRed Dwarf, anything at all with John Cleese (remember A Fish Called Wanda?), the incomparable Judi Dench (et al) in As Time Goes By - every one of these witty, funny Brits have brought me hours of laughter.

Also, I’m lucky to have very funny kids and grand-kids. When we’re all together we love playing board and card games and that usually leads to joke- and story-telling. Here’s one of the most recent tales.  A couple of weeks ago, my five-year-old grandson was given a fish, a tank, and all the accoutrement’s. He was thrilled when my daughter set the fish up in his room and left to cook dinner. After half an hour she realized he was very quiet - too quiet. She went to check, and saw the fish swimming on its side, covered with fuzz. When she asked my grandson what had happened his eyes widened and filled with tears. "How", she asked," did your fish get all fuzzy?" He reluctantly answered, "Uhm… I took him out for some air…but just for a little bit. I wanted to play with him, so I put him on my blanket." She was incredulous. "How many times did you take the fish out?"  "I’m being honest, Mama," was his brave answer, and my grandson started counting on his fingers, "One, two, three, four, five."  He got a Time Out and my daughter removed the fish and cleaned its tank. My grandson avoids the subject.  Oh, and the fish is just fine. I’m still laughing.

Liz Peek: Stock Market Continues to Vote Nobama

Liz Peek - In your columns I see fear dressed up as anger, cynicism and sarcasm. It is not becoming for a woman of intelligence, with a good education and great wealth to dribble away her considerable talents by resorting to name-calling and fear tactics. Attacking President Obama for the next four years will not bring the Bush years back, no matter how many temper tantrums you have. Why not redirect your knowledge to advise those of us members of the hoi polloi about how to work with the administration to dig out of this deep trench created by eight years of contemptuousness and greed?

Clinton Inviting Iran for Afghanistan Conference

This is a strong, smart decision. I have never understood why we should refuse to talk with the Iranian government and include them in international conferences, regardless of their bellicose rhetoric. We share what has become an increasingly small planet because of sophisticated technological and military capabilities. An exchange of words is preferable to an exchange military might.

A Day at Will, by Sheila Nevins

This has been the most helpful column I’ve read here in a month! Thanks, Sheila, for getting the ball rolling with your always insightful/delightful writing and to the rest of you for the information and wise advice. I’ve been procrastinating - "I have a holographic will. That should do it", and "it’s so expensive to set up a trust." But I’m out of excuses. Thanks to all of you for the kick in the behind.

More Bad Economic News: 1 in 5 Homeowners 'Underwater', Owe More Than Homes' Worth

"If you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem." Disappointingly, wOw seems to have decided to be part of the problem. Instead of seeking to shore up the American psyche, wOw is resorting to alarmist, tabloid level topics, with writing by or about marginal wingnuts. Sensationalizing this topic and many others as a platform for taking jabs at the Obama adminstration helps no one, and opens the door for those persons who thrive on trying to undermine any constructive efforts to make all our lives, yes, even theirs, better. One component of the economic turnaround is psychological, and mass negativism will only delay a recovery. Not fantasy thinking, but real optimism about our collective national ability to overcome obstacles is what this country needs now. Take a good look at Diana’s post above. She’s in the real estate business and she knows what she’s talking about.

Jackie Kennedy and the Real Reason First Lady Michelle Obama Is Sleeveless

This is the most ridiculous attempt to stretch a comparison I’ve read in ages! Do you think Michelle Obama suddenly began wearing sleeveless dresses last year? Have you ever considered that sleeveless is her personal style? Don’t insult our First Lady by reducing her to an imitation of Jackie Kennedy. Status symbol? Muscle? What superficial nonsense!

Jim Cramer on Obama's Economic Abilities: 'It’s Amateur Hour at Our Darkest Moment' (Videos)

You may be right, merrell. But it doesn’t matter a whit to me if she’s listening/reading. I’m just putting the truth out there and providing accurate facts. That’s what’s important to me.

Women in Afghanistan Slowly Breaking the 'Culture of Silence' Surrounding Abuse

RNC's Steele Apologizes to 'Incendiary' Rush Limbaugh, Jindal Agrees

Just watching the Republicans chase each other around - first accusing and then trying to "out-apologize" one another is a great spectator sport. Rahm Emanuel is one clever strategist!

Jim Cramer on Obama's Economic Abilities: 'It’s Amateur Hour at Our Darkest Moment' (Videos)

Oh, deber, I wouldn’t open up that conversation unless you want to discuss why "Johnny-come-lately-McCain" did not sign onto the bill until a year and a half after it was introduced, and why, aside from agreeing to co-sponsor, he subsequently did little to promote it. All McCain ever talked about then was the potential fallout of accounting troubles in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He didn’t say anything about a free-wheeling climate among creditors that had major financial institutions becoming badly leveraged on bad loans.

Also, for years, his campaign manager, Rick Davis, (who was head of the Homeownership Alliance, a lobbying association that included Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, homebuilders, real estate agents, and non-profits), collected a hefty monthly paycheck- from Freddie Mac from 2003-August 2008.
