It is easy for folks to stand on the sidelines and say what they think Silda should have done. But until you have been in the situation, you don’t REALLY know how you would react. We all need to leave them alone now so Silda can figure out what she wants to do next - and not in the public eye.

I had a teacher in 8th grade tell me I walked like a cow. The fact that I can recall that with such clarity lo these many years later speaks to the impact it had on me. I applaud Valerie for her honesty and great sense of humor!

Have I noticed?? Are you kidding me?? Although I love this site, this is a glaring example of how different your lives are from mine. I have had the same car for 4 years. When I first bought it I paid $15 to fill the tank. I fill the tank at least 5 times in my 2 week pay period. I now pay $35 - $40 to fill the tank. I can assure you my income has not kept up with that. Do the math - I drive to work to earn money to buy gas to drive to work. So don’t talk to me about shoes… I eat out less and eat a lot of ramen noodles. I walk more. Any new wardrobe updates are from Walmart or Target. Vacation - forget about it. Success is not measured anymore by how I have gotten ahead - but rather ‘did I make it through the month without getting in any deeper financially?’

Hmmm….. I think we got distracted on the weight issue - who’s fault it is, etc. The stunning line to me in this beautiful piece is - “She got smaller and smaller and smaller. Until one day when she disappeared completely. And she was finally happy with her new/old self.” This is a woman who has lost herself.

My daughter has strict instructions - if I am ever incapacitated she is to make sure I have on mascara.

I think this is too complex of a question to be answered with a simple yes/no. By the time I found out my ex cheated it was a moot point. I divorced him for oh so many other reasons. I also think it is easy to say what you would do in a situation until you find yourself actually IN that situation. Walk a mile in my shoes and all that….

I don’t think Americans focus on anything for too long. Even back in the 1920’s, the country’s worse school massacre ever occurred in Bath, Michigan, but was overshadowed by Charles Lindberg’s accomplishments. Do we remember Ayatollah Kohmeini? At one time he was our focus. I was reminded just the other day of JFK, Jr. Like Diana he died a sudden and shocking death. We were obsessed for weeks. How did that all end? As soon as the next big news report came out, we moved on. Do we have the same kind of nationalism as smaller countries around the world? Are we just shallow?

So many women I know are afraid of sex after 50, and I am not sure why. No searching for a “life partner”, no pregnancy worries, no back seats of cars, no one to answer to but ourselves. What a wonderful liberating thing! I know there are old guys out there with the cute young hot bodies - but that kind of man doesn’t interest me. Lots of men appreciate intellect, humor, confidence, and honesty far more than tight skin. And the ones who learn about the knowledge, skills, and patience of older women - those are the winners!

Any one who has ever been married knows that there are times you have to stand by your spouse - either physically or emotionally - when you don’t really want to. It is a personal decision that I think can be determined by many different things… fear, dependency, moral outrage, business, apathy… you name it. But to stand behind the podium for political reasons…that’s painful. Not to mention demoralizing, degrading, and demeaning. He should take ownership for his actions. My concern is that the media is focused on the wife behind his shoulder, and not on the investigation that led to this discovery. Hmmmm….maybe that is why she is there????
