Did You Ever See a Book Cry? by Sheila Nevins

There are shelves and shelves of books in our house.  When the shelves run out, they’re then stacked.  I love the feel of a book, the smell, the way they look, the exictement of opening a new one by a favorite author, everything.  Some are friends, some are to be shared and some to keep always either to read again or to share with our grandchildren.  I could not imagine a life without books….Kindle?  Just another toy as far as I’m concerned; nothing like the real thing.

The Palin Book, as Dear Margo Sees It

Deber, absolutely true — would anyone set aside their egos to actually get a president who was best for our country elected?  Doubtful.

The Palin Book, as Dear Margo Sees It

Palin for president is truly scary.  If the Republicans hope for a win in the next election, they can’t possibly consider Palin … how she was a running mate for McCain in the last election defies belief still.  Her name in our household was "Palinwhatweretheythinking?"  Elections have been rather perplexing for me and the last few have had me voting against rather than for a president.  The best person rarely wins, or even runs; the press won’t allow it.

I agree with Karleen — "bright as a 2 watt bulb" is granting her a little more than she has and to read that book, why?  Other than to know your enemy, but she’s rather scattered, how could one know what her thoughts are?

What was your favorite book (or books) as a child?

My parents never understood the importance of childhood reading and certainly would have considered it an unnecessary expense and so there weren’t trips to the library or children books around for me.  My love of reading though has gone on for as long as I can remember and I would pick up anything to read.  It wasn’t until I was about ten and visiting my aunt in Philadelphia that I discovered that people, ordinary people, could have bookcases full of books; books that I could read and enjoy.  Something that I now have as well — I suppose that’s where it came from.  So while the only books I remember loving as a young child was a games, puzzles and short story book that was given to me by someone as a birthday present, books have and always will be my love.

Stephen King wrote in one of his recent books about how, when he and his wife were first married and had very little.  Books were still a priority for them and neither would consider that they were a luxury.  Pretty much sums up my philosophy.   But a childhood favorite?  Unfortunately, none.

I do believe that Whitney Houston and Brittany Speers may be vying for most "comeback" albums.

Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

Sadly, what we’re all missing is that though these politicians run for office on beautiful sound bytes, their main interest is themselves. We haven’t had a viable candidate and we haven’t had a good president in so long.  No, Obama was not my choice, but neither was McCain and (what was he thinking?) Palin — Catch 22, what do you do?  Do you not vote?  Do you waste your vote by writing in?  Does anyone care?

Music was the great divide between ourselves and our parents. Will technology be the dividing factor with the new generation?

It already is the dividing factor.  Just when I think I’ve got it — it changes!  I’m happy to be able to converse with you all on my computer and that so far I don’t have to do much more than turn it on to do so.

David Letterman vs. John Edwards: When someone comes clean about their wrongdoing, are you more willing to forgive them?

The regreat that these men feel are at getting caught.  The degree of difference is that John Edwards was trying to be president (was he trying to be President Clinton?) and Bill Clinton was president — certainly a far greater harm was done by them to more people then by a television celebrity.  John Edwards was busily humiliating his wife while she was battling cancer — a special ring of hell for him; so no, I could never forgive him.  The rest of them?  I can forgive them, but can their spouses?

Dave Letterman — it seems that would be a perc for the job — how very sad.  I thought the days of the casting couch were over; guess not.  For me, I just don’t know how I would feel or what I would do.

A little nagging thought though, these men seem to want to be caught.  Even with all of their achievements they needed to let you know that they still had "it".  Otherwise, how could they possibly think, with the media and their digging, digging, digging, that they wouldn’t be?  It does seem that the days of "wink, wink boys will be boys" are over for  men.

One study from Yale says that women are evolving to become shorter and fatter. In recent years have you shrunk or gotten fatter?

Now, I’m not only only lying about my weight on my driver’s license, but my height as well.  So, yeah, shrunk, gained weight…did it all.

Stupidly Standing By Your Man? (Photos)

There was a couple having dinner in a posh restaurant when a gorgeous woman came over and hugged and kissed the man passionately.  His wife was aghast; "who was that?" she demanded to know.  He replied:  "that was my mistress."  "Your mistress!  I’m going to divorce you; I’m leaving you!"  He calmly took a sip of his drink and said "look around, look at this lovely restaurant in which we’re dining.  Think of your jewels and your trips, your homes and all that you have."  With that, another gorgeous woman came over and kissed him on the cheek.  "Who’s that?" his wife, incredulously demanded to know.  "That’s Bob’s mistress" he replied. His wife said: "Ours is prettier."

Should marijuana or prostitution be legalized?

I know I sounded flip, it was not my intention.  I do believe they should both be legalized, taxed and further contolled…in the case of prostitution:  with health measures.  As well, marijuana is supposed to help with the reaction to chemotherapy; certainly at least those who are suffering the after-affects of chemo should be allowed some relief.

Liz Smith: George Clooney and Graying (Video)

Grey or not, I really not really “got’ what it is with George Clooney.

Should marijuana or prostitution be legalized?

Yes, legalize both………….and tax them.  They are both alive and well; flourishing.  Our government could be the pimps and their masks would be off at last.

What's your No. 1 tip when asking for a promotion or a raise at work?

Never, never use the word "need"; everyone "needs" more, that’s not your boss’ problem.  Speak of your accomplishments and the work you do over and above your job for the company.  As well, in these poor economic times, it may be well to wait for a better time to ask — unless of course you work for a defense industry of some kind — they’re raking it in.
