Rachel Alexandra: A Filly Wins the Preakness!

We were really interested in seeing the race and actually planned our dinner hour around it. We went to a local area with three restaurants that had decent bars with televisions; actually got a seat at one very popular one with the television right in front of us. As the horses were being brought out and shown (gorgeous weren’t they?), it started to storm and the televisions went off.  They were off from just before the race until right after, so we never got into the excitement, only knew who the winner was.  You never saw so many Blackberry’s being accessed for news!

When it comes to home repairs, do you do it yourself or hire somebody?

Drat!  Still with the pie chart.

Our son can do anything and usually will do it for us.  But there are some things:  plumbing, electricity that we really hire an expert for.  Otherwise, i can sometimes figure it out.

Do you still have your high school yearbooks?

PS  again!  That pie chart has got to go

Do you still have your high school yearbooks?

Tears well up in my little eyes and travel down my chubby little cheeks when I look at those high school year books from more than 50 years ago……….we were so young, we look fragile.

Candice Bergen's 'Murphy' Advice to Carrie Prejean

Candice, you really are my fave — no affectations there…love it!

Have you ever done something you feared would come back to haunt you? Did it?

I do try very hard not to do things that will come back.  But at this vast age, of course, there are some things that still haunt me — oh, that Jewish guilt.  Candice’s finger would be one; small things usually, granted, but to me shameful nonetheless.

As far as topless?  Who cares?

Would you ever take it all off and pose nude?

It would be just too embarrassing to see all those people holding up wooden crosses, yelling "back, back" and shielding small children’s eyes.

Does the cost of health care affect the frequency of your visits to the doctor?

PS add my vote to the “really don’t like that pie chart”

Does the cost of health care affect the frequency of your visits to the doctor?

We’re very lucky to have a wonderful health care plan that includes eyes, dental and prescriptions, so we’re able to maintain all that we need to.  However, a friend of mine with many health problems, pays dearly for a prescription plan for which she must initially meet a base cost.  Some of her single, 30-day prescriptions cost as much as $800-$900.  She and her husband have often opted to just not take them — they simply cannot afford that cost.  So as well as the health care industry and all its problems; I do hope that the pharmaceutical companies will be overhauled as well.  The pharmaceutical lobby is a powerful one and the companies for which they lobby are employed by need to bear some very close scrutiny.

'Incurable Optimist' Michael J. Fox Talks to Dr. Holly Andersen

My father had Parkinson’s in his later years.  It was difficult for him to adjust to it (of course he wouldn’t or couldn’t take medication); but the illness itself invades every part of your life.  It was difficult for him to get the fork to his mouth when eating; the cup to his lips when drinking; he couldn’t wear hearing aids though he had a profound hearing loss — it was just impossible to get them in or to change the batteries.  As well, he wouldn’t allow the help that he needed…..but that’s another story; one for when we do ‘aging’.

I too think it’s wonderful that Michael J. Fox has taken his celebrity status and is using it to inform.  I’m sure he has his "pity parties", but has found, as many of us do, that no one comes.

Thank you Michael; I too wish you many more optimistic years with your family and us.

Marlo Thomas Defended Phil's Sacrifice to 'Neanderthal' Mike Wallace

I remember the mini-controversy surrounding Phil Donahue’s decision to leave Chicago and go to New York.  At the time, it showed such a strength of character for him to go against what the ‘old school’ of Mike Wallace’s era felt.

Have you ever relocated for a significant other's work? Would you be willing to sacrifice your dream for that of another?

There was, and still is, nothing I wouldn’t do for my husband.

When we married, he was in law school and I worked for the government.  It was I that wanted to relocate and really wanted him to take the bar exam in another state.  It would have been easy for me to get a transfer and I liked the idea.  He didn’t and we stayed……it’s okay, but that was a decision I’ve always wondered about.

Sacrificing my dream for that another — I would think that one would eventually so resent the person asking that of you.  Though there are dreams and dreams — some of them we outgrow, some of them aren’t feasible for many reasons and some we manage to do later in life.

Have you benefited from this recession in any way?

Yes, Kermie, I agree.  That was my initial reaction as well — "beneficial?"  In what possible way?  It is insulting.  "Re-evaluating ones lifestyle is not just a choice, it is a necessity to survive" is one of the truest statements I’ve read in a long, long time.  People are stretched to their limit and being asked to do even more.  Prices have skyrocketed on staples and yet income has gone down.  No, I don’t know anyone who has benefited from these terrible times.

Have you ever switched political parties?

Never bothered formally switching, but do vote both parties.  Though lately, I’m so displeased with them both.

In memory of 'Golden Girl' Bea Arthur, with what three women would you get a kick out of being roommates, à la 'Golden Girls'?

Not answering the question, but in memory of Bea Arthur — there were two instances that I remembered from her show "Maude" that I’ve even used (and of course given credit) — they both were relative to her mother:  one when she was introduced…there was Bea with lovely white hair and her mother, as she said "prematurely ……… red" and that look she had.  The other was something to do with a neck spasm when her mother came to visit and in the next shot we saw her with her hand on her neck, kind of rotating it….again the look.  She’ll be missed.
