What are you reading that you really love?

JJ GB I read cookbooks, too. Would almost rather read them than other books. I have a large collection and an addiction to buying more. When I was small and went to a one room country school with 8 grades and 1 teacher I read all the books in the “library” over and over. The Library consisted of a bookcase about 5’ tall by 3’ wide. After lunch our teacher used to read us a chapter of a book. I particularly remember Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, hence my lifelong love of anything Mark Twain wrote. I have belonged to a book club for many years, meeting monthly, and we have no restrictions on what we read. Mysteries don’t work well, though, as there is really nothing to discuss. I prefer non-fiction to fiction and love history and philosophy. Does anyone else here belong to a book club?

Olbermann and Matthews Take It on the Chin from Hillary!

I have been out of the USA… sailing in the BVI without any contact from TV, radio, or internet for 11 days and when I returned… nothing new was being said about politics. I could have turned on any media and thought it was an hour after I’d left. How do these “pundits” do it??? Repeat the same words in the same way, forever muddying the political waters with their interpretations of what the candidates have said. I’m reduced to watching c-span, BBC or public television or listening to NPR for some little relief. And taking what I hear from those sources with a grain of salt. Each candidate is flawed in some way. The thoughtful person accepts that given and must decide which one will do the best for the whole country and then cast their ballot for that candidate. It is us, after all, who make the country run. We need an inspiring leader to point us in right direction. I’m still deciding which candidate has the guts to do that.

Long Live Gossip and Celebrity Worship

This is seriously funny stuff, Liz. You being the queen of the gossipers.

I Read the News Today, Oh Boy: Hillary and I Dodged the Same Bullet

If my daughter had gone on a trip with me to Bosnia and walked next to me after we get off the plane and saw me kissing a child and (most likely) remembers that trip…then heard me tell a greatly embellished tale about the incident, I wonder what she’d think of me. Especially, if I’d written a book that detailed the trip. I usually remember something that happen even better when I’ve written them down. I’m sorry to see the desparation in the first woman to run for president. Makes me sad. Kinda puts the lie to the idea the if a woman was running things it would be a better country. Grace under pressure is what I expected. Sad, sad, sad.

A Princeton-trained physicist told ABC News this week that Global Warming is 'all bunk.' Do you believe in Global Warming?

During the Cretaceous Period my whole native state of South Dakota was covered with a sea. At another period it was covered by a glacier. Climate changes occured before men walked upright and will continue after we go back to crawling on all fours. Humans may be contributing something to climate variations at this time in our history. Exactly to what degree is for the scientists to study. I have to come down on the side of Peggy Noonan. Its not a matter of belief… but facts.

Should prostitution be legal? Why? Why not?

I’d like to see all respondents on this site who want prostitution legalized to become a prostitute for a year… then come back and report if you still want it legalized. And if you are lucky enough to have a daugher… why not encourage her to enter the profession, as well… after all, anything legal should be an OK job… right???

What are you doing for Easter?

As I type I’m waiting for my Guiness and Onion bread dough to rise before baking and sipping a little red wine… preparing for my 4 children, their spouses and 9 grandchildren’s arrival tomorrow afternoon for the annual Easter at Grandma’s House festivities. They won’t let me change anything… always expecting the usual foods and egg-hunt in my back yard or the park ajacent to my home (I’m known as the grandma who lives in the park). My multi-national family includes my daughter-in-law from Peru, daughter-in-law who’s Mexican/Philipino, daughter-in-law born in Wisconsin and my daugther who converted to Judaism when she married her Tunisian husband. There goes the timer bell… must get back to the kitchen and shape the bread into loaves for baking. I’ll be off sailng in the British Virgin Islands in a couple of weeks.

Stuff I Want to Share

Liz: Thanks for sharing. I tried to access the sun article but can’t find it on The Week website. And those cheese rolls…. I want some Right NOW!!! Can you send some to Southern California???

Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann's Plan to Save the World

Dear Edith Ann: I think you are addressing the wrong people. If you were a parent instead of pretending you are a kid you would know that kids don’t even know there’s such a thing as Washington, let alone what a politician is. What kids know is how their parents behave toward them. If Mom spends more time at the office and with grown-ups than she spends with the child, the child knows what is more important to her. And it isn’t the child. If you are trying to make the world a better place for children as well as adults that starts locally. Its a funny idea to put labels on politicians and think you are doing something to help the kids. Go to the local community and donate time to the library and after-school programs. You’ll really be helping a kid. I applaud this website for allowing me to voice my opinion.
