My Comments (633 so far…)

What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery – and won big?

Kermie, this touches my heart and the fact itself has changed the face of our country. We have become a nation of "gasoline alleys, fast food and big box stores" and every berg looks like the next. I miss Main Street! After my retirement we went back to my hometown and made an effort to do just this. We were able to see some small successes but there were many who fought any kind of change from their comfortable ways on the last quarter century or so. This was in the south and I wanted to start and craft and education program for those less fortunate and market their wares. I did make some inroads but the fight wore me down. At least, I tried.

Oh, and, I think I would drop dead if I won the lottery so it is a good thing I don’t even go there.

What is your favorite short story of all time?

Joan, I’m off to get Wells Tower’s book!!! I just new we liked the same things…my fav travel writter has been Bill Bryson with "A Walk in the Woods" at the top of the list.

Who is your favorite newspaper columnist, the one you would follow anywhere?

Aw, Joanie, you don’t mean it. We are going to have to go through a press agent now and pay when you’ve already shown it all to that board of yours for free! Remember, I have the memory of an elephant ( although no other characteristics such as party affiliation, etc. ) I seem to recall your chair just happening to collapse while you were wearing a beautiful new pair of lace panties at a board meeting if memory continues to serve me correctly. And, I must say, your whole neighborhood sounds interesting, indeed. On second thought, maybe paying your new agent is not such a bad idea after all.

Who is your favorite newspaper columnist, the one you would follow anywhere?

Belinda, you are right. I’ve come to truyly admire Eugene Robinson online and on TV.

Who is your favorite newspaper columnist, the one you would follow anywhere?

I have recently stopped the paper and am finding I don’t seem to miss a thing. You can find everything online and I almost always enjoy Frank Rich, Paul Krugman, Maurine Dowd and recently Glenn Greewald of Salon has been added to my list. There are others but these are in the do not miss category.

Who is your favorite newspaper columnist, the one you would follow anywhere?

"Smile…your on Candid Camera", Joan! I’m calling "my man" at the Tribune now to stakeout your house one of these early mornings! Lol

Vacation Reads, Recommends by Roxanne J. Coady

Mo, thanks for the tip on The Help. I have seen it at the bookstore but was afraid it might make me angry. I, too, am in need of a few books to "lose myself in"  just to relax. Thank you, Roxanne, for your recommendations as I had never seen or heard of these books. The Ballard of West Tenth Street sounds delightful and a nice change from the politics of the day.

What do you hear outside the windows of your home at night?

Although I live in the city, my bedroom is a world unto itself and anything I want it to be. I have a white noise machine and it is usually on birds and crickets…sometimes the ocean. It is also decked out with an air purifier and two humidifiers since Denver is so dry. I am jealous of all who live with this naturally but this works for me.

How worried are you about swine flu?

I thought the same when I saw Dr. Gupta and feel that the media should be much more responsible in reporting speculation and rumor…they are totally out of control without regard to consequences of which there are many!!

How worried are you about swine flu?

Hi Diana and Josie…..I agree with you both and feel this totally a result of 24/7 news. Be cautious during flu season always and in public places. This week-end I read "Columbine" by Dave Cullen and, although a jouralistic marvel, it is frightening on many levels and especially as regards the media. I highly recommend it and know that I will be much less accepting of ANYTHING I read or hear.

When a company's opinions or stances are discordant with your own, are you reluctant to buy from them?

You SAID it, moonchild! I would walk naked through the streets eating bugs and twigs and go without mass media before before supporting the aforementioned companies…no problem. My dream has been to live off the grid and I was able to do it for six months in the mountians of California and it was one of the happiest times of my life but, I do need someone with me and an find no "takers". Wildflowers are me.

Comments of the Week 4/18 - 4/24

The comments this week were exceptional and I feel priviledged that I have come to know most of you. Congradulations on your beautifully articulated points of view.

Were Jacqueline Onassis and Lee Radziwill Embarrassed by 'Grey Gardens' back in the day? Lee Says 'Never'

Tis a shame that "stuff" happens and no one ever assured us that life was fair. The Beales made the most of what was and was not theirs with a bit of humor thrown into the mix. I love it and have ordered HBO just to enjoy this fascinating performance.
